It's not red, it's Hugger Orange. He said so. BTW, I've noticed in real car mags that Hugger Orange often photographs on the reddish side. If you see a '69 Camaro in a magazine and you can't tell if it's Hugger Orange or bright red, it's Hugger Orange. '69 Chevy Garnet Red is notably darker, about like Testor #4 Dark Red.

The '69 Firebird isn't unbuildable, but it suffers from the same problem as the MPC '69 Camaro: It was only halfway updated from the '68, and is quite wrong. But there's one easy thing you can do to it that will make it look at least 50% better. When you want to build yours, drop me an email and I'll explain what needs to be done.

I have the AMT '59/'60 Vette on the bench even as we speak. I think it's going to look MUCH better than the '62. In fact, I think it might even be better than the MPC '60. I did the '62 Vette, and it doesn't look bad except for those mini headlights. The MPC/AMT '67 GTO isn't "unbuildable," it just takes a lot of skill and work to get it straight and looking good. I did one that came out almost as nice as Spencer's.

Not a big deal if someone like you or me really wanted a '68 on the shelf.

Murphy was right!

Sand and polish it off/out, no problem at all. Have done it many times. -
It sure does! Nicely done, and I've built a couple of those myself.

Very nice model, but it's not "one of the first muscle cars." Not even close.

Try this. I recently used this technique to fix a broken '59 Corvette windshield frame, and will be fixing an original AMT Sunbeam Alpine the same way very soon. BTW, I used newspaper for the Vette and it worked fine. It's even stronger than it was before the break.

I believe it had front/rear bumpers/grille/taillights and complete interior. Maybe a hood? But I'm not 100% sure and there's no way to check now unless someone here has one. I do believe I have one of their '68 Chevelle conversions waiting for me in my big "Last Care Package" box.

Great score, congratulations! Now I'm wishing I'd bought the '68 conversion parts from Modelhaus....

Extremely clean build! Model on!
-
I know of one, but the roof looks more like a '65-66 than a '66-'67 to me.
-
That's pretty cool!

I was going to say "had a love child," but same basic thought.

finishing-off an enamel paint-job; clear enamel?
Snake45 replied to fiatboy's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Agree completely. #1000 grit is "coarse" for color-sanding work, and #1200 or #1500 is better in most cases. -
Can someone identify this paint job for me?
Snake45 replied to 426 pack's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Definitely not factory. I don't think Plymouth even had a green like that in 1966-67. I don't think any manufacturer did. -
AMT '67/'68 Camaro roof? I'll be watching this, as I've been wanting to try the same thing for a long time. Good luck and drive on!

I don't know if that type of toothpaste will polish paint or not--some will, some just make things even worse--but it looks to me like your orange peel is so severe that polishing isn't going to smooth it out, it's just going to make shiny orange peel. I can tell you this because I've recently trying polishing two or three OP projects that looked very similar to yours. Two of them couldn't be fixed and I had to strip the paint and start over. I think at this point your best bet would be to lay on two or three coats of a good clear coat, let that dry, wet-sand the clear smooth, and THEN you can start polishing. Polishing severe orange peel just gets you shiny orange peel.

Wasn't the trashed car a junky hardtop?

Great pic! And it really shows how wrong the lower edge of the spear on the kit is.
-
Yes. They "bent" the lower edge of the spear upward to clear the enlarged wheel openings, and the shape is wrong. That's what's kept me from building this kit all these years. I'm giving serious thought to grafting most of the rear fender skin from a Revell body on to get the right shape.
