May upgrade, change in how to share from Flickr
peteski replied to 89AKurt's topic in How To Use This Board
Les, I copied the photo link from your post and pasted it here. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51210081965_c2312d9674_b.jpg It shows up as a link - that means there is some extra (invisible) metadata in it. Then I took your link (above), pasted it into Windows Notepad (which strips all possible metadata, and makes it "plain text"), then copied it from the Notepad and pasted it in this post. It shows up as a photo. -
I also like the idea of being able to donate some funds to the forum. I suspect that some members would be willing to throw in few bucks to help with the costs of running this forum. As for the Internet Archive (wayback machine), I'm not sure how successful it is archiving forums (or any websites that are database-based). Have you actually checked how much of the forum's contents is there (without it pointing back to the live version)?

"Holy Grail" Models?
peteski replied to Billy Kingsley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Maybe we should be using the term Xcalibur instead? -
I do see them now - makes more sense. Still, they show up as anonymous - you can't click on each, and expand them to see who left them.

Thanks! I also wish you all the best. Mom is a hoarder and also paranoid (even before she was afflicted with dementia), so her neighbor constantly "breaks in and steals everything" (including food from the cabinets and fridge). She locks the door, puts the chain on, and even barricades the doors by placing bunch of things in front of it, but somehow the neighbor still manages to come in (even with the door untouched). Mom takes things into her bedroom for overnight, and locks herself there for protection. When I explain to her that it is impossible for anybody to enter the apartment without disturbing her barricades, she agrees, but the next day, she goes back to her ways. Plus whenever she misplaces things, she used the "thieving neighbor" as an excuse when she can't find something in her piles of stuff. Of course, I end up finally finding the "stolen" items hidden somewhere in the apartment. Yet, physically she is in good health. I have so many crazy stories crazy, I could write a novel.

Just messing around with the new features to see how useful/useless they are. So far the results are not very promising (but maybe we don't have the secret decoder ring). So all you see is green squares with a number? NO way to tell what reactions were given, and who gave them, right? Not very useful.

I went back and gave a trophy to all your posts here.

OK, since this silly system is here to stay (at least for now), how do we see who gave what reaction in my posts or posts made by others? I just gave confused reaction to your post and I see it, but what do others see? By the same token, some of my posts have a green square with a number on it, but that is all that shows. The square is not clickable so I don't know what type of reaction was given and by who. At least when someone replies with a post, I can see what they said (good or bad) and who said it. Or is this system designed for all the reactions to only be visible to the people that reacted. That would be *REALLY* dumb.

Bugatti 100P

I would probably go for a clean look - no racing stripes. The wheel wells look either silver (aluminum?), or white, or light gray?- 24 replies

He is a member here and had a very long thread about decals. It seems that he has either stopped doing them, or took a long sabbatical. GO the last page of that thread and read the comments.

I skipped through the video, and the guy was able to glue the tire halved together using contact cement, but he didn't really clean up the flash at the seam line at the center of the tread. He didn't bother because "it will not be visible on the completed model". He is not the most fastidious builder, but gets models built, and lots of views on Youtube.

Yeah, that would be good!

I wonder since the front blades attach to the smaller diameter part of the cone, they are made longer, so that the total diameter of both propellers will end up being the same? That is one slick looking aircraft. It has very eye pleasing lines.- 24 replies

Silly commercials have been around for quite some time, but somehow they were cuter back then. Anybody remember the series of NYNEX Yellow Pages ads? Like Civil Engineers, Rock Drills, Fencing Instructions, Dumb Waiters, etc., etc. They are on Youtoobe. Here is Furniture Stripping. Then there were other cutesy ones like Doritos crunch, Prego Spaghetti Sauce, and many many others. Most of them were not very annoying, and no booze, cigarettes or medication ads back then! Also, there were fewer ads per program. It seems nowadays that there are more ads than actual programming. And to put everybody in a happier mood, here is a couple of oldies.

Quite possible since I had mine for a long time. Mine was powered by a small motor, similar to what powers inexpensive motorized toy cars. It would still shake 1OZ. bottles but at about 1/3 of the oscillations of the small Testors bottles. You got me curious. If you feel adventurous, and have some spare time, maybe you could unscrew the bottom plate and take a photo of the innards?

Ah, so that was a ran about the stupidity on the Internet in general. Yes, things are getting really out of control on the Interwebs (and everywhere else too).

Oh well. That is too bad. My mom has dementia/Alzheimers, so every day with her is a total surprise.

Don't laugh - looking for input on those mini-cube "a/c" units
peteski replied to Monty's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
If it is too good to be truer, it usually is. Those things are swamp coolers which will not work in humid environment. Even in dry air, these have almost zero cooling BTU rating. Well, they probably never mention any such ratings in the first place. I live in area that gets hot and muggy in the summer and I roll my eyes whenever I see those "as seen on TV" ads. Dumb, dunb, dumb! You might look into a portable AC unit. Those are floor standing devices (usually on coasters) and have 1 or 2 flexible ducts that go to a nearby window. I prefer the one with 2 ducts (but those are harder to find). Unlike the silly devices in TV ads, these actually work (I know - I own one). https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/appliances/g21286604/best-portable-air-conditioner/ https://www.consumerreports.org/portable-air-conditioners/best-portable-air-conditioners-from-consumer-reports-tests/ https://www.gearhungry.com/best-portable-air-conditioner/ -
Welcome to today's world ran by millennials. EBay doesn't keep the old images forever. That cure image is probably the standard browser 404 error (page not found). But search engines cache small versions of many images, and those persist for a long time. I guess the search engines are partially to blame for this irk.

That's a tough break! Did she originally chose that color, or you picked it yourself to surprise her?

Interesting about the tires. Original tires were molded in a very hard slippery plastic that was almost impassible to glue. Everybody is saying that these 2-piece are molded from soft rubber compound. Has anybody tried thin CA glue? CA usually works really well on soft rubber. The photo of the preproduction model (earlier in this thread) shows what looks like decent tires.

Great idea for a model! Very cool! How about modeling other cars from the series? For example the car Beaver accidentally rolled out of the driveway, then he got a citation from a cop? I think it was a Chrysler.

I bought a similar shaker from Micro-Mark about 20 years ago. It is made by Robart. It was originally designed for battery power, but it was upgraded to AC-power (included a permanently wired wall-wart). It worked really well for small bottles (1/2 OZ. or smaller), but the motor didn't have enough "oomph" for larger bottles (1OZ. or larger) and it would really slow down. It also used to walk on my workbench. I glued in couple of large steel bolts in the battery compartment for ballast and that solved the walking problem. I also found much more powerful geared motor I'm going to retrofit in the shaker. For now the shaker is out of commission. This is the current version. Mine was cream color and had a different label.
