Cooters wrecker
stavanzer replied to BIGTRUCK's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
I really like the additional boom you added. Looks great! -
A Double Home Run, Chuck! When you set out to build a Show Stopper, Wow, you really deliver. I have the RoG kit, and the recent Italeri Fire Brigade version. I hope to combine them in the future. One niggle on the RoG Kit. Apparently the Aluminium body on the real thing is not strong enough to hold the spare tire on top of the cab as shown. RoG, used a 1 of 1, unique vehicle as their model. Thus, when I build mine, the spare will get moved to the back door.

Question about frames used for hot rods...
stavanzer replied to JollySipper's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Looks Great so far! I'd say you are on the right track. Some of the early rods where a collection of Castoffs, & Junkyard parts, bashed and welded together by 16-17-18 year old boys, who were highly motivated, but not always very experienced. They cut, bent, pounded, and in some cases, just botched together their cars. That said, it was always done with great enthusiasm. Have fun! -
Two Quick Questions. 1. I know there are tonnes of Small Block Blowers in kits. But, any favorites for the evergreen '55 Nomad Engine? What did you use? Did it fit well? What kit was it from.? I'm looking for a fast & dirty kitbash, but I'd like to avoid "too" many issues with fit. 2. The directions are confusing to me (at least) on how to assemble the front suspension for the Gasser Version. Does anybody have any good pics, drawings or tips on how to do it? Thank You, ATA

What I want to know is if a certain Finnish Modeler can fit this turbine into a '59 Chevrolet (Jetrolet) Ragtop.

The Grille is the real sticking point, Badly shaped and curved the wrong way. I have 4 of these. 2 of the hard tops (including one of the original yellow plastic ones) and two of the recent Round2 Roadsters. It is a nice kit, but no better than nice. If you like Jeeps, then this kit is a natural addition to the collection. If not, it is really kinda "meh". It does however provide a blank canvas for all kinds of projects. Rural Sherriff's Cruiser, Baywatch Style Beach Patrol, Fish & Game Warden, All Out Rock Crawler, Rust Bucket Beater. They are all in the box. I remember seeing a photo of a ProStock Scout at one of the Early NNL's. Good to have back.

Notice that most of the Police Gear is blocked on the chrome tree. An odd choice, IMHO. Still the Taxi Sign and Luggage on their own are a great addition. Like the Surf Boards and Racks from the '65 Chevelle Surf Wagon, we will see that little bit of tooling again. (Can you say '78 Monaco Taxi?) Still, this will sell a bunch of kits. There have not been any dedicated Taxi kits since the Johan '59 Rambler wagon, and Lindberg Dodge Caravan, and that was a long time ago for both kits. Are there any other 4 door cars in the MPC / AMT tooling bank that might be plausibly resurrected as a Taxi?

I really like the kit! On the subject of the box art........ Whatever Photoshop Jockey they are using, he needs to go. I know that the "Fringe" buyers (all of us on this board) will purchase multiples of this kit. But, Atlantis also sells in Hobby Lobby. "Carl Cardtable", is influenced far more by good art work. Sadly, This is not the box art you were looking for, to bend a quote. Michael Fischer is right. This is poor art. Atlantis has produced some decent art for the new kits. Look at the Unreal Roller and Groovy Grader. Much better. This kit and the '57 Caddy? Not so much. Given how truly awful the 1/48 scale '55 Chevy One Ton, was, this is an area where Atlantis should step up their Game.

So, Greg. Have your Tweezers Shown up? Don't leave us hanging. I've had tools disappear for years at a time. Extremely Frustrating.

Don't laugh - looking for input on those mini-cube "a/c" units
stavanzer replied to Monty's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
To add my 2 cents. Either a Swamp or an A/C needs to vent to the outside. Hot Air and/or Water have to leave the room the unit operates in. For spot Cooling, I'd choose a small portable A/C unit like the ones Pete linked to. The tiny units being advertised online right now, are simply "catch-penny-engines", designed to take your money and leave you with another piece of useless junk to clutter your garage. There are solutions to your problem. Bur sadly, they will not be as cheap or as easy as shown on the internet. But, it is a common problem, and there proven ways to handle it. As far as the Window A/C problem, I've lived with both the window unit & the portable stand type. The upright portables are much harder to live with. Tripping over them was the worst part. No matter where you put them, they will always be in the way. IMHO, the window is the way to go. Best of luck, Monty. It is good of you to offer to help. -
Yeah, the tire choice on this kit, is Blazingly Poor. Revell has a very mixed record on two piece tires. It needed one piece tires. NOTHING these days should use 2 part tires.

MPC Turtle Wax 1982 Dodge Custom Van
stavanzer replied to Mr mopar's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
So? Tinted Windows and New Decals? That's all? Colour me totally unimpressed. I do hope it sells well, however. Kits like this one pay for the restoration of kits like the recent '64 Olds. So, in that sense I am happy to see it, and hope it is a blazing Success. {Bring on the Turtle Wax, Mod Stock or Super Stock kits. -
Happy Birthday, Steve.

James, I don't see how to do that. Maybe 5K of the Firebug, could pay for restoring the tool back. A "One and Done" run of Firebugs would help. I still have an original FireBug decal sheet, if it would help!
-
Ooh, Larry. I have not seen that kit in years. Maybe Atlantis got the tool for that one. Now, would a great time to bring it back.

Truthfully, it looks like a lot of the AMT kits from that time. Simplified, with detail only in the places that you would see. Typical for a Barris Kit aimed at 10-14 year old boys. For all that, though, a neat kit anyway. I'd think that the Barris/Nostalgia market would justify correcting the tool and running them again.

"hot rod's/Custom/bagged models" I missed this one. I am interested.

Back on May 9th, I posted about losing my Job on May 7th. Of course, I went straight to the Indeed website looking for jobs. I interviewed for a new job, on Friday the 14th., I was hired Monday the 17th, worked my first day on Wednesday the 19th, as well as the next two days. This will be my last weekend off for sometime. The hours for the new Job, are 8pm-8am (Graves), and Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday. So, Four 12's a week, with 16 hours overtime. I've spent 12 of the last 23 years, working graveyard shift, and 15 years working 12 hour shifts. I know this routine. At 58, I am gettin a bit old for this, bit it is a great opportunity with a good, local Oil Field Service Company. Best of all? Laid off on the 7th, hired on the 17th. Ten days from Job to Job. A new record for me! I am Stoked.

This Kit, by itself will sell a lot of GMC Cabover Kits. Should be some neat Turbine Powered GMC Cabovers on display in the next 6 months.

Just watched HPI Guy's review. I'd call it a Swing and a Miss. Lousy tires. Somebody at Revell, should be admonished for that. All the trouble to Tampo Print what have to be some of Revell's worst tires. And then to mold them in practically Un-glueable Faux Rubber! Ick! The rest of the kit looks Ok, but only Ok. See, Sow's Ear = Silk Purse. (Not!) Really Great Decals though!

And, I have a couple Sandman kits from the Eighties' stashed away, and will need only the half cab Bronco.

My First car was a Military Ambulance. 1953 M43 Ambulance, to be exact. I paid $800.00 for it in 1980. This is not mine, but It could be. Same Colour, same winch. 37 Horsepower Flathead 6. 4 speed Trans, with High and Low gearbox. First gear in the Hi range was still geared so low that for on road use, you only used 2,3 &4. Armstrong Power Steering, 2-40 Air, and brake shoes smaller than those on a 62 Valiant. This is a fact as, the guy at the Parts House gave us the Valiant shoes, first. They were bigger than the example we had brought in. Brakes were truly awful. They required two or three pumps before the pedal would come up. And that was AFTER my father and I had rebuilt or replaced the Master Cyl, all Four Wheel Cyls, and all Eight Brake Shoes. We bled the system over and over again. They never did work well, but I learned to use them, anyway. She grossed 8900 lbs. Personalized California Plates "53 BEAST" I sold it in 1990.
