Changing Times, Changing Tastes
89AKurt replied to Richard Bartrop's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hmmm..... looks like a pregnant Gremlin. Wish I could draw that fast. ? I have to overlay a picture before drawing. That Gremlin, to each his own. ? What is with the bomber seats, geez talk about uncomfortable. -
Thanks, glad you like it! Great, you're like the kids on a trip, "are we there yet?" ? Another step done, glued the roof on. Needed to add a little under the windows, the part under the front windows came from the tail end of the floor, looks uneven with the same color grey, but it's true. Just screwing around with the wheels. ? I'm glad the roof is a little larger than my drawing, looks proportional to the whole vehicle. Some relocating of door lines are required for the back door. Next step is making the diamond plate for the bed, then the tailgate. I'm debating whether to have some sort of roll bar like the G63. I'm also looking at winches for the front bumper.

Current Hot Rod / Street Rod trends
89AKurt replied to OldNYJim's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That still the standard for traditional Hot Rods? When I look at SEMA shows, that covers more variety. I haven't been checking out the latest either. I used to go to shows, and had magazine subscriptions, but got burned out. Now when I see a new car, it's sort of exciting to see for the first time, vs. having read all the lead-up reviews. When it comes to tastes, variety is the spice of life. There is a Porsche Outlaws topic, I see cross-over themes from the Hot Rod community infiltrating them foreign things, but not the other way around. The common thing is craftsmanship, and how much money the owner has to burn, which almost disgusts me. Far as building models, I have retreated so much from current trends, that I invent what I like and run with it. I also avoid doing Street Rod, Hot Rod, Street Machine, etc. because so many others are into it, let them do what they like is my attitude, I'll appreciate their work when I see it. /end rant/ -
Of course, another perfect build! Great job on the light lenses. I've masked for window trim on some projects, makes a huge difference. I'm trying to remember what US market had for headlights, not that.

I would go along with this! But my first choice is the '68-'72 Chevy pickups, we have enough Fords now. ?

Thank you very much for stepping into my shop! I recognize your icon picture somewhere, oh where was that..... under a pile of medals if I recall. ??? ?? Thanks! Due to private reasons, don't have the time to work so much on this project. Just as well, need to allow time for putty to cure. At this stage, it's Squadron on the fender modifications. For the roof, had giant gaps to fill, used epoxy putty (got decades ago, think from Brookstone), a two part product that can be rolled out with the knife handle, using water. Removed most of the high points using the bench disk sander, then a rasp, then a new sanding stick. Slathered on Squadron putty. I grew up with a '61 Mercedes 190 sedan, I'm seeing almost the same profile with this roof, but most cars of that era looked the same. This was brand new when my dad took the picture, he worked at Zion N.P., I was born a few months later. Anyway, I'm having to brainstorm on how to accomplish doing the interior now. Since car was a convertible, easy to stick the seats in after painting. Now I have to keep the floor separate, and make the body set down *after* the seats etc. are installed. The pickup bed will also have to be separate, which includes doing the sides, and cutting in the tailgate. Then I can feel confident about gluing the roof on. ?

Don't get excited, I didn't really plan on building it this year. But you never know..... Thanks for the information! Funny about the brakes. I have other projects to go nuts on, doing a slam dunk curbside will be a nice change of pace.

A member of the Prescott Antique Auto Club, founding member 50 years ago, owns one of these. He still drives it. I'm intrigued by the massive chain drive. -
Announcement of Results /Winners - Virtual Venue MCC
89AKurt replied to Danno's topic in Contests and Shows
I know your club had time, license plates, and awards invested prior the shutdown. Thank you for going the extra mile to accommodate the gap. Thank you for finding some of my entries worthy of recognition. Some classes I avoid, it was very cool that you invented unique classes over the years, because some subjects don't neatly fit in. And you are welcome! -

So this is definition of PRO BUILT?
89AKurt replied to Oldcarfan27's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My wife says I should sell my models, and I say nobody makes money doing this. Now I read your comment and wonder. Last century I attended a Monterey Historics (a year Ferrari was featured), in the art section was a guy selling built models, saw a Tamiya 312T that I built, his was hardly professional quality, was about to talk to him but saw he was wrapping up a deal. I want to say his price was $300 - $500, and was amazed he was selling them. Wondered if he paid for the space and made any money. Had to check out this thread....... -

That qualifies as a KILLER model in my cook book. I got one of those engines decades ago, Norm got the ball rolling on super-detailed aftermarket goodies. Have that kit, but is missing the chrome tree, which inclueds the grill, so want to know more about the p-e. Wish there was a source for the tires, Dunlop and Pirelli please. -
Better late than never to this party, another super clean build, love the subject.

Thanks! The book shows an earlier vehicle, just 4 wheels, a beefy looking car, caption says it's the precursor to SUVs. The challenge back then was inventing CV joints, something we take for granted, and are found on so many AWD vehicles. The FWD indepenent susension will be fun. Their game has 10 times as many pieces. ? Thank you.

Not a dumb question, I was going to ask what putty is being used. Cutting and shaping styrene takes more time than putty, and you still have to shape to blend in anyway. This is one of those projects where you slip the chassis in and out about a hundred times. So many of these parts are sort of set in place, are you adding locator tabs/pins/strips to help? -
Looks good, nice color choice, not RED. ? Yea, masking can be a chore.

LOL That was more for me than anyone. ? Thank you. Worked on the shape today, not just the body, but fenders too. I like the other design fenders MB did, they are a little fatter, but the front curved steeper towards the back and ended with an angle, vs. this design sweeping into the running boards. So I have morphed the concept, added the edge behind the wheels. I also completely removed the spare tires, one reason is because I just don't like that look (yes it's classic), and will put in the back as Trophy Trucks do utilizing the wells I hot-wire cut out. I also modified the back fenders, adding the center side but without the step since it's not a convertible, and swept the tail end back and added to both sides. Extended the body. Roof is glued but needs a ton of work. Thinking of making the back window taller and wider.
