The Baillon Collection at Rétromobile
Oldcarfan27 replied to 89AKurt's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Fascinating. While I recognize the Ferrari's, Bugatti, Honda roadster and the Facel Vega, there are a lot of others that I had no idea what they are or what value they have. Some even looked like they were dredged from the bottom of a lake! Can't imagine a Ferrari 308 in that bad of condition being worth too much, as there are much better running, driver condition specimens available for a song nowadays.- 12 replies

Scratchbuilding from PVC
Oldcarfan27 replied to Brian Austin's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I can't say about long term, as I just started using it this year. I'd have to say it's pretty stable as the sign it formerly was used as lasted quite a few years without distorting before I cut it up. PVC is used for plumbing pipe and other long term construction materials and it has to be able to remain strong. Here's the project I used it on. The black sheets are PVC. -
Tractor-Trailer Air Lines

I saw someone build an 83-84 van by using the grille from a similar year Bronco. Looked pretty good! Would probably have to flatten the ends where the headlights are, as the Bronco grille juts out from the headlights, whereas the grille on the van is even with the headlights.

You really should sell copies of your bodies, you'd make a mint! Nobody else makes models of subjects like yours and readers are constantly asking you where you got them from. Very creative and unique!

But it ain't red? Is that the 1/8 scale Lindberg kit? That is a good competitor to the Monogram "Big T" and can usually be found at a better price than the Monogram. I like the details you've added to it. It's a good looking build. I think the tires it comes with are perfect for the 60s vibe the kit is from.

Scratchbuilding from PVC
Oldcarfan27 replied to Brian Austin's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've used sheets of black PVC to build parts of a car body before. Material works GREAT as a formable medium and super glue makes an indestructible bond to it. It's also flexible enough to take rough handling through bodywork and shaping. Only downside is it is porous, so areas with extreme changes need to be filled with more super glue or putty and sanded to fill in the voids to make it solid. Small downside compared to the benefits. I got sheets from a store that was throwing out their old plastic display signs. A great way to get sheet plastic on the cheap, BTW. -
Instruction sheet BLOOPERS
Oldcarfan27 replied to Vintage AMT's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
How am I supposed to find instruction bloopers if I don't use the instructions? When I flip through them they look alright to me. -
Fomoco 1949 fastbacks
Oldcarfan27 replied to Paul Payne's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Nobody's mentioned the 61-63 Tbirds. And the 57 Ford beat GMs thin roof style by 2 years. And sold more than Chevy! I'll agree that for some reason, Ford did prefer the 3 box form of design for many years, but to be honest, the Mustang coupe was still a boxy profile. The fastback is what broke the mold. -
Any Chance AMT Might Backdate The Dodge Van?
Oldcarfan27 replied to oldcarfan's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
Plus the old tool has wire axles and we know how some builders feel about simple chassis details. -
One company 15 years ago did the stub-nosed Econoline in 1/24 diecast metal. Had opening doors and good details. Can't remember the name, but WalMart was selling them, so they weren't high end collectibles. As far as the "DustBuster snoot" late model Transit, haven't heard. I wouldn't be interested in one even if they did it. ?

Who made a 62 Imperial
Oldcarfan27 replied to junkyardjeff's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Cool parts and a great find! My thrift stores never get vintage stuff like that. Someday I hope the acquire a 62 Imperial, as I'm planning a Mad, Mad, Mad World series and I've already got the Sylvester's 62 Dart, Rental 61 bubble top Impala, Phil Silver's 48 Ford Deluxe convertible, Smiler Groggins 57 Fairlane 500 and the 56 Ford Victoria that Don Knotts drove in the movie. If all the stars line up, hopefully Atlantis has the Revell Imperial that I can build from. -
Steve, I dare you to build one!

Looking for Some Wire Wheel Covers
Oldcarfan27 replied to Dirkpitt289's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The wire wheels in the AMT/Polar Lights 1964 GTO or the 65 Dodge Coronet look a lot like the ones in your photo. Maybe put a post in the wanted section asking for some. Somebody might have a set to trade. -
X3 But I'm just old school.

What Happened To The Monogram 1/32 Snap Kits?
Oldcarfan27 replied to oldcarfan's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
If Revell still has the Malibu police car, then we'll probably never see it again. Why would they issue their lone 1/32 snap kit when all the other ones went to Atlantis. Just sayin' -
Really nice. Got lotsa attitude!

Magnum was the series that made him famous. He had done many roles before and after that. He was on "McQ" with John Wayne, "The Greatest" as Sonny Liston against Ali and on Sanford and Son as a funny character named Norman. He also had parts on Kung Fu, the Rookies, Starsky and Hutch, Kojak, Baretta and McCloud. In fact he was on many of the popular TV shows in the 70s and 80s. Look on IMDB and see the complete list of shows and movies he was in. Very well received and from what I've read, a very nice guy to boot! Sad he was taken too soon.

So I take it that there is a lot more tooling that they haven't ran plastic through. As far as identifying what cavities are still in each one, is it because they can't easily open the tooling to see what is inside them? I know each assembly is large and very heavy. As from what I have seen on other threads, they are basically a large block of steel with all of the business end inside. I wish we knew what an opened tool looks like, so as to understand the limitations of evaluating what it is. If it was so easy, I think they would take a few days to open all of them and have a complete inventory made, but obviously it's not, as decades can go by and they still find more surprises. So then, tooling must be a catacomb of hidden treasures not easily mined.

Molotow Chrome Pens at Hobby Lobby
Oldcarfan27 replied to DanR's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I thought I made my update clear, I know HL has Molotow, I just wanted to know about the other choices. Thanks Snake and Pete for understanding my point. That's exactly what I was wondering and at four bucks, it's a lot cheaper too! Now I can buy with confidence! ? -
When's the date?
