John...welcome to the forum. You just gotta dig into one of those kits. Once you do it will all come flooding back to you and you won't want to stop. Doesn't matter if you do a good job or not. I have been asked many times the reason I spend so much time on my hobby. The reason is simple...its peace of mind. Once I am at my bench the rest of the world just goes away. We all need that. Where in Penna are you?

Recently released Limited Edition Revell (ex Fujimi) of the Porsche 917 that won Lemans in 1970. Driven by Richard Attwood and Hans Hermann. Color is Tamiya TS49 + TS8 mixed 50/50. Model is mostly box stock with a few additions and modifications. See picture captions for more information. Thanks for looking and comments welcome. Finished mpodel. The whitew strip surrounding the headlights and extending to the back of the car was all one decal. It required a few safety cuts and some solvent but laid down nicely in the end. Overall the kit decals were outstanding. Rear veiw shows some of the great detail included in the kit. Wheels are not black but a color called Dark Iron. Its Tamiya LP-54 (a new color) and is a very dark grey with a little bit of metallic in it. It is used extensively throughout the kit and mixed with other colors too. I like this color and it is a welcome addition to my palette. Side veiw shows the fantastic fit of the body to the chassis. The rear deck fit great dry but required a very small u-clip to hold it tight. You can barely see it in front of the rear tire. Close up shot of some of the rear detail in this kit. A lot you don't see as the suspension, shocks and accessories are all included.

Harry...here is a link to my build: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/175182-porsche-918-spyder-weissach-martini-package/ That decal was tricky...I cut t in half...right down the middle. More tips in the picture captions. The second build always goes quicker and better. Go for it.

Ni ce looking F-1 Bruce, those Revell 1/24 can be tricky...you did well. -
Harry, the paint turned out to be very striking...like it a lot. I understand your frustrations a lot. I did this kit twice. Like your version.

considering all your troubles its not really a bad build. Is this the Revell Mclaren 570S kit. If so I have this kit and was able to make the doors work. Its a WIP at the moment.

Excellent model of a hard to build kit Wm. Good job. -
Urs...what a magnificent job you did on this one. Having built one myself I know the challenges. Followed your WIP and you did a great job there too.

Helmut.....thanks for the compliment. My local hobby shop is doing a "shelf queen challenge". The idea is to find a rare old kit that is irreplaceable and build it. This one is my entry.

Michael....The Tamiya paint went straight over the white plastic and some of Tamiya's white putty. I avoid primer whenever possible. Its just an extra unnessesary step in my opinion. If you use paint made for plastic (like all of Tamiya) there is rarely a problem. I have 800+ builds in my collection (including this one) as testimony to this statement. Thanks for asking.

Found this kit at a toy show. Its pretty rare as I have not seen one for sale on any of the sites. I originally planned to scrap the gearbox and put a motor in the back. But finding a 351 Ford Cleveland engine was proving to take forever. So I decided to just plain finish it, motor and gearbox and all. Besides there is an engine cover in the back and it would have covered most of the motor anyway. This kit proved to be a real challenge as it was in two halves, top and bottom. The front top and bottom also located the steering and door hinges so final assembly meant lining all those pins up. Butg its done and there were many other problems mostly solved now. Color is Tamiya LP-44 Metallic orange with LP9 clearcoat. Thanks for looking. Finished car on my fall background. The Mangusta had a body designed by Ghia ands was the precursor to the Pantera. Those two hatches in the back provide access to the engine. Getting them to open and stay closed took some ingenuity. Side view shows the elegant lines of the car. It was considered a super-car in its day. Note the tiny little handmade latch just in front of the rear wheel. This holds the hatch down tight. Interior turned out better than expected. I still have trouble photographing interiors.

I will second Gary's request. I did notice that they are all 1/24. Wouldn't mind knowing where that 2H came from. That is what I am striving for. I would like to re-create that photo that was taken at Laguna . I am well on my way. -
Thank you Gary...I do like my Martini cars. Smoke is an interesting color...a clear grey. Most kit chrome is way to shiny and a light coat of this tones it down quite nicely. By layering it, you can give it just a hint of darker or go as dark as you want and still retain the original color. But it has other uses. I did a top coat of it on a green for an older Aston Martin build. I was looking for that stately green color and it did just that. Works on other colors too. Works as a wash too on metallics. I have it in both airbrush and rattle can.

Thanks Gary...it was fun digging those out of the back of the case. I got to see em race at Bridgehampton in 65. They came in 1-2. -

Interesting thread Gary and you got me going. Hauled out a fair share of my co9llectiion but not all. Still have some to add to this: Chaparral 1 resin, 2J also resin, Indy 2k resin and the Chaparral Camaro conversion. Some of these brought back some fond memories. Thanks for suggesting this. I labeled all the pictures...lots of em...you asked for it. Early Aurora Chaparral 2. Lots of working features. Chaparral 2G. Motorized Japaneses kit...maybe LS The horribly inaccurate Otaki 1/28 Chaparral 2H. Built box stock because I didn't know any better at the time. The Chaparral 2A fgrom LS. It had cast metal fittings and wheels and i added the metal screen. The good ole Monogram with driver figure. Chaparral 2D from modellers. It has aged very well. diecast is Hot Wheels Unidentified 1/43 kit and Hot Wheels diecast. My original IMC build of the Chaparral 2E. I have since re-visited this kit and it is much whiter and stays together better. This is how you learn the clear enamel over white yellows like crazy. A couple of plastic Chaparral bodies, 1/55 from Hong Kong and 1/43 from ??????? 1/24 Fisher Chaparral 2F...my very first resin kit. Very early Lancer HO clear body mounted on a T-jet chassis and never raced. It was too pretty. Interesting note: do you know why the ends of the wings were painted red. Because Jim Hall kept cracking his head on them in the garage.
