"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!
steveracer replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Tim, not to completely derail this thread (I think I can take license here as I am contributing with the 77 Camaro) but perhaps we crossed paths sometime? We were working on the facelift of the round Probe at ASC, and we painted the show car in that "bruise" color as we so affectionately called it. Might have been about the same time. Now back on topic, I am nearly done with the Camaro. Subject A or B? I had this acetate front air dam from back in the day. I really don't like it....think it won't make production. -
Gregory, my Dad went to Pulaski - but that was way way way long ago I grew up in NewBerlin and went to Catholic school for 3 years before transfer to the dark side. It was good for me. I could have turned out bad. Thank my parents for tough love if you know what I mean. Now I remember that amusement park. Remember vividly all excited on a hot summer day, running up to go on the Tilt A Whirl. I stopped dead in my tracks when even after I smelled the pungent aroma, I saw the recycled spaghetti on the stairs up to the ride. Golly, I can still smell it. Now back to that Chevelle 300 sedan, Dave. Take us for a ride back in memory lane when you get er tuned and ready to hit the road.

Paint chrome or strip & paint?
steveracer replied to Kevinch's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Deuces, where did you find that stuff? Can I get it at Maynards? I thought that morphed into the purple power stuff several years ago. The names changed but the product didn't.. Did Castrol sell it off - only to change to blue and use the same old name? -
I think I saw that car at Muskego Beach when I was a kid. Yea, Mom used to take us there on hot days with the Buick Special. That one had a lumpy idle V6 that I can remember! Perfect Wisconsin car - even in the winter!

International 4070 Snow Plow
steveracer replied to dragstueck's topic in Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Juergen, please tell us more details on how you made the snow on the ground and on the vehicle! Like application and how long this took! This is the most awesome looking rig I have ever seen. Absolutely stunning - besides, it snowed like crazy last night here in Michigan! -
Cool, we all have limited time and too many models. I built the same kit and yours looks nice - feel comfort in that darn hood....mine has the same weird warp. I started with a molded in blue one and painted it orange. Tough job. So you are a lurker...with over a thousand posts. And your name sounds familiar... What else you got?

How cold is too cold to paint outside?
steveracer replied to vamach1's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
This topic may calm my new normal here at the steveracer ranch. My wife kicked my painting operation out of the basement. Even though I have a MicroMark spray booth vented outside, she can't stand the fumes and things turned ugly. So I am gonna move the booth out to my non-attached garage, which has some heat, and can get to maybe 45 degrees or so after some time. If I heat the model, some paint, use the booth and perhaps get a food dehydrator out there to set the model in, I should be ok? I will also move the compressor and air brushes out there, because I was really afraid of the metalizer paint smell in the house. Do you think I will be successful, and stay married this way? -
How do you protect Alclad Chrome finish?
steveracer replied to Ghostmech's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
OK, great. I didn't use enamel - however I used what was recommended and produced or packaged by Alclad. Not sure why that would be an issue to cause the ghosting or lightening of the chrome finish 3 weeks after application. Force, whoever you are replying to, they used what Alclad recommends, so I am not sure how to interpret your comment. Please clarify. As well, how many coats of Alclad did you use on your Fairlane interior parts? And without clearing over them, that sounds like a very successful application. Which is what I am looking for over the recommended Alclad black base. -
I got this book in the mail that I ordered. I blitzed through it. Not really what I expected for detail drawings and images but will make some good reading on the development on the 5 cars built. This to support my Tamiya Lotus 79 build !

How do you protect Alclad Chrome finish?
steveracer replied to Ghostmech's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I have Alclad over the Alclad black. I shot one maybe two coats at most of the alclad chrome. It sprayed and turned out great, so I let the parts sit - now for about three weeks or so. I did NOT clear with the aquagloss. Now - without touching ANYTHING, the chrome look is disappearing slightly and the black undercoating is showing through. Looks cool, but not what I want and if this continues will look horrible on parts that are to appear chrome as the model ages. Anyone have this issue before? I plan to spray another coat or two of alclad over the parts, then clear them with the alclad aquagloss. -

Update on the 77 AMT Camaro, been in the box for 30 plus years..... Rubbed out the Camaro that was in mothballs. Also a little comparison to the newer AMT tooled car. And some engine detail with guitar wire for fun. -

Pete 359 snap 24hr build
steveracer replied to tbill's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Cool! I just bought this kit two days ago, now your going to finish it in 24! With the blurry photos, I see you are either really in a hurry or just have that look of a race to build! Gonna watch this thread. You guys have the race on your computers while you build? -
how would you describe this color? flat gold?
steveracer replied to youpey's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Yes, that is a protective coating of Kevlar over the fuel tanks. Been a rally staple for years. So decals or a mix to match the Kevlar color, add some texture with tissues or hot thinner on the tanks before you paint them. -
Bought this for $18 today. Gonna give it a go later after I finish a few projects. I plan to have a log trailer for it.

Lots of work there Kurt! Came out looking awesome almost like there was one kit with all the parts to build this version. Love that it all stayed in the Toyota family!

Cost of motorcycle models...
steveracer replied to whatsup's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
To support Pete’s comment. There are a LOT of items on eBay that have real high starting prices. Looking for that one uninformed person to make the purchase. There is NO cost to list anything at any price. It’s free. I have even seen some mundane items listed at over a thousand dollars. Not sure what those may be for, perhaps drive traffic to the eBay store when “most expensive” is selected to sort out searches. -
Box Art Puzzles from Round2
steveracer replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This is awesome. Wife and I build puzzles during the winter months, currently on a Road America aerial view with lots of trees! Gonna get us one of these when they come out. Support the industry. -
Group B rally car with engine detail?
steveracer replied to youpey's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Build the Peugeot 205T16 from Tamiya. It has a full engine. Tamiya's Audi Quattro has somewhat of an engine and looks pretty decent.... The Group 4 Fiat 131 Abarth also from Tamiya, has a full engine. The Group 4 Lancia Stratos from Revell has an engine. As well the larger scale at 1/12 and 1/10 kits of the Stratos have engines You could create a TdF Group 4 Porsche 934 from the Tamiya kit if you want to scratch some parts, and I found a great link for RP rally parts here.... https://en.kmp-sm.com/cars-1-12 Also, the Raid cars from Tamiya, both Peugeots T16 variants, have engines.... My Hasegawa 037 has an engine, however you would need to open the engine cover and scratch build the details. -
Lancia Beta Montecarlo
steveracer replied to afx's topic in WIP: Other Racing: Road Racing, Land Speed Racers
Cool build to follow! My, how criminal it is to allow Lancia to fall to the lows it is today with one "fashion car" to sell in Italy. I'm gonna subscribe to this. BTW, I really love the dolly, did you build this or buy a kit of the trolly? Makes the images so much more fun to look at! -
Tamiya 1/12 Ferrari 312b
steveracer replied to IanH's topic in WIP: Other Racing: Road Racing, Land Speed Racers
Ian, I have a story going on on another forum strictly for formula one cars, not sure if you are there or not, but don't think it is prudent to have two going at the same time or hijack your story. Oddly, I am getting to the same point with the engine and headers as you are! Only difference I cannot remove the headers from the engine case, they are really glued in there, so I am working around the issue, kinda like rusty bolts and nuts on the exhaust system so "leave sleeping dogs lie". Think I may just lay a little glue in those collector joints to fill the gaps.... Keep up the good work! -
GoodbuildNY - that is a fantastic build and very nice attention to detail! I bought this kit a few months back and now look more forward to building it thanks to you sharing your work. The rear end details of the taillights, moldings and SS panel look so very sweet.... Thanks man!
