Looking for a realistic B&M hydro
Casey replied to twopaws's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Are all of the B&M Hydro Stick transmissions found in the older Revell kits mentioned above essentially the same? No separate nor nor bottom pans, correct? The newer '00s Revell Big John Mazmanian '41 Willys Gasser appears to have a separate bottom pan (good), but I haven't had any luck finding a good, clear image of the real thing online. My understanding is B&M essentially took a used GM Hydra Matic, beefed up and rebuilt the innards, and added it's own sticker to the raised oval pad on the right side of the case, but the trans case itself appears to have both a bolt on side and underside/belly/bottom pan-- is that correct? Is the bottom pan of the Mazmanian Willys kit correct in shape, as seen on Raul Perez's build shown below?: I guess a separate bottom pan is preferable to no separate pans, but only if the shape is close to accurate. Don't even get me started on block-to-trans adapters... -
I don't think it was ever corrected. Maybe someone who purchased this kit more recently could let us know.

AMT Parts Packs - Your Ideas & Suggestions?
Casey replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I like that idea, but it would need to be a universal type slide-in camper. I'm not sure one could be designed which fits multiple pickup beds without compromising too much in the design. Would a parts pack consisting of only luggage sell 2,000 units? I don't see how, to be honest. I do like the idea of a Hot Rod Parts Pack with most of the parts you mentioned, and since Round2 already has the injector stacks parts pack, including two or three different Hilborn or other mechanical fuel injection manifolds wouldn't be the worst idea. The only problem is they'd have to be engine specific, but a SBC is always a safe bet, and I'm sure they could pick a few others. -
Hope so, as that should save a bunch of work. I love how you can clearly make out the engraved "Hornet" nameplate just rearward of the marker light on the body. JO-HAN had some talented artists engraving those molds back then.

We only do that to Fords. Pulling an unfinished project out can be a bit daunting when all the thing which need to be done come flooding back into your mind. Good to see you back at work on this one. Hopefully the lasagna turned out well, too.

Revell '55 Bel Air Box Art Tribute, Part I - Yellow Car
Casey replied to Casey's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Thanks Brian (and everyone else, too ). I did a lot of poking around on the H.A.M.B. and Tri-Five.com before starting this project, and I was concerned about firewall clearance using the 409 engine, not wanting to use a modern, smoothed firewall. I will be able to get away with moving the radiator to the front of the support panel, leaving just enough clearance for the fan...more on that later, though. Thanks. The Revell slicks are showing their age and have some molds flaws which aren't ideal, but I should be able to hide them for the most part. I debated using the Halibrand rear wheels as they seem to be a bit too high dollar for a car like this, but they do have the period look, and the Tony Nancy kit contains two sets of rear wheels and tires, so...done. I've always liked the steel wheels from the T-bolt kits, and wanted to run steel wheels up front on both cars per the box art, so that was easy. Turns out the front tires aren't from the Lindberg '64 Belvedere kit, so still trying to source those. One sidewall on each tire has the lettering printed out of register, but I can turn those to the inside. Not sure how realistic the straight implement style tread is on these, but they look good to me and the wheels are a nice snug fit inside them, too. -
AMT Parts Packs - Your Ideas & Suggestions?
Casey replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Agreed. I did mention a part from an existing (or former) kit in the MPC Jeep snowplow, but I would suggest it be an all-new creation, not a re-used insert. This is also why the "engine from kit XYZ" idea wouldn't work. Round2's not going to develop a Parts Pack which contains identical parts to what is already found in an AMT or MPC kit, unless it's something they re-created (steel wheels in the '66 Nova and '65 Galaxie kits, etc.) and are including in the kits as stand alone "added value" or "lost lost and now restored!" type parts. It only works one way, not the reverse. I think he was thinking of the AMT motorcycles included (or partially included) in some early to mid-'60s kits? I suspect most people are comfortable changing out the wheels and tires on a kit with those from a Parts Pack, but an entire engine might be more daunting for the average builder. These Parts Packs still have to have some appeal to the non-enthusiast builder/consumer, so leaning more toward the generic/universal side of things seems, to me at least, to make more sense from a sales potential perspective. That probably doesn't appeal to most of us reading this, but the ability to sell (and ideally, sell out of however many are produced) what is designed has to be considered from the start. -

The wheels from the Galaxie and Mustangs are quite nicely done, and with different tires (sorry, funky too-heavy tread on those makes them too toy like for me) and you have a winner. I guess the good thing with selling them separately as a Parts Pack is it's understood the consumer is responsible for final fitment, so Round2 needn't worry about that. -
AMT Parts Packs - Your Ideas & Suggestions?

Adding modern parts would make no sense, but I think a parts pack consisting of only air cleaners is a bit too specific. I find the four style pie crust slicks parts packs are guilty of that-- who wants to use twin pinstripe slicks that nobody ever saw on anything bu the Munster's Koach? Those seem to kill some of the value, but I guess if the air cleaner set consisted of six of those Cal Custom carb scoops, a Cadillac air cleaner like in the attached image, and what else would be included? With parts this small, you'd have room for a lot. -

That's not really what's being asked in this topic. You honestly think a Parts Pack consisting only of multiple types of vintage air cleaners would be a good seller? Round would have no problem moving 2,500 of these for $9.99 each? -
Yep, I'm going to do some online searching to see if I can see which other kits they might've been include with, starting with those you, Mark, and Mike mentioned. Revell '57 custom Ranchero:

What do you think would make for a good selling, stand-alone Parts Pack from AMT? It should consist of newly created parts or a recreation of original parts which are long gone (like the forthcoming '57 Fantasy Parts Pack), but remember to keep it realistic-- it's got to be a small package and sell for $13-$15 or so. I propose: 1) 1/25 scale snowplow from (or similar to) the old MPC Jeep Commando, maybe add an amber rotating beacon style(?) roof light or two with transparent amber domes? 2) The Yard Tractor Parts Pack: Wheel Horse tractor found in the MPC Indy Turbine kit(s). If just one is included, the MSRP would/should be less: 3) Vintage Drag Strip Parts Pack: Mini bike from one of the MPC or AMT kits (maybe the forthcoming '86 El Camino?) and a few oil cans, two toolboxes, a floor jack, wheel chocks, or instead a starting line 'Christmas tree' like the one from the MPC '72 GTO, but all-new, with transparent bulbs/lenses in red, amber, and green? Maybe a decal sheet of vintage sponsor logos and vintage style class numbers and letters? 4) Vintage Service Truck Parts Pack: Two 55-gallon drums, push broom (both similar to those found in the AMT Ford C-600 Stakebed kit, but not necssisarily direct copies), a few oil cans, two toolboxes, a floor jack, wheel chocks, etc.-- things they could add to add extra value just about any pickup truck or van reissue. 5) Day 2 Wheel & Tire Parts Pack: One set of deep dish 5-slot wheels and some 60-series pad printed RWL BF Goodrich tires. Really, they could do multiple different sets of wheels using the same tires, and label it multiple ways. I think the newer pad printed Polyglas GT tires are great, and Round2 has certainly gotten a good return on that investment, but aftermarket wheels and tires for street vehicles, as a stand alone set, have been much overlooked, and Round2 has a ton of musclecar, pickup, and van kits in which they could include such a wheel and tire set as a bonus item. I realize this might be a tricky one, as they'd need to make sure the wheels and tires both fit and mount properly to whichever kit they are included with, but a few different wheel back pieces might be able to cover many of the variations. That's all I've got. Let's hear your suggestions/ideas, please.

Maybe Round2 can do the Mount'n Goat Commando kit as a One Run of Fun (do they even do that anymore?) and backdate it to the generic "Commando" version with the snow plow when the move on the the next oil company licensing deal. I think they've done Texaco and Union 76, but not Shell yet. I doubt the sales would justify the cost of the backdating, but who knows, maybe some of the inserts for the plow still exist. Hmmm, a separate 1/25 scale snow plow offered as an AMT Parts Pack...

I like the 727 TorqueFlite auto trans in the Revell '69 and '68 Dart's 727, too. Lots of close up pics of the '68's BBC and 727 here: The AMT '71 Dodge Charger R/T kit also includes a nice 727, though I don't have any better pics for comparison:

You can save each image, then upload it here as an attachment. I don't even bother with using the PB image link here anymore since there's plenty of storage space. -
Control key and + key. There's not much which hasn't been mentioned already here on the forum, and Round2 is probably going to display all the same stuff at the New York Toy Fair tomorrow. I think I see the Joker Goon Car box on the top shelf next to the Cougar F/C? Other than that and what could be seen in Luc's pic earlier in this topic, I don't think there's and news. You can go to Round2's facebook page and see the same pic, but nothing close up.

Obscure Kits You Never Knew Were Made...Until Now

The kit includes eight leaf springs, but I think the two sets of front spring are identical, which isn't much help for backdating to the stock-ish ride height. It does appear the original pair of rear leaf springs are included, though. These are the more arched/heavy duty springs which I presume were added by MPC when the Jeepster kit became the Commando kit:
