Only thing left that I see is to add some white letters on the tires. I do love this one.

Nice scores!

Those sure would take less space that my set of 1/18s...

I haven't bought a first gen t bird in 1/24. I have a 1/18 Ertl precision 100 or whatever they called it. Like a mint car in 1/18. Wife had claimed it as here's and a permanent piece in the collection. But you guys have some nice pieces in the mint and icons. I do have a 53 Vette from icons and it is much nicer than the Franklin mint car.

The real one sold for 2.75 Million I saw on the net.

Gramps, I have not seen any listing for a hood ornament on this one. there are some out there on ebay for other cars and you might use on of them to have one on there. There is probably a cottage market for replacement parts like hood ornaments, door handles, wipers, etc. And David, I have seen these from $20 up to over $100 USD. This one is missing a spotlight, but that's just not a big deal to me. This is part of my friend's collection, so we may sell it or just buy it ourselves. I do hate shipping cars like this that todd didn't have boxes for. I remember us looking for this one for his collection. there is an alternate version as well, made for Tinder Box. Prices are definitely all over on this one. I screwed the rear down as far as it would go, but wish the screws were shorter and it would go lower in the rear.

It is mentioned in another thread here about paint rash and metal rot or rash. I understand this to possibly two different conditions. Here is an article from george Bojaciuk on the metal condintion. http://www.jsssoftware.com/pdf/diecast_rash.pdf Apparently this came from MCM? If you go up a level, you get this, http://www.jsssoftware.com/aspx/diecast_tips.aspx , which has a lot of tips on diecasts and some specific car repairs/adjustments that may help. And maybe that little bit of paint rash may develop into a full blown rot condition where the metal actually crumbles. I post it here because I had to go on a search for it myself. At this point, many of us have cars that could be a couple decades old. Or we may be buying cars that old. You can often see how bad a rash is in the listing photos. When I do photos, I try to show it if is bad enough to look like it is affecting the car. I have commonly seen rash affecting Ertl's 68 CHevelle SS396 in black, and the Danbury Mint 48 Chrysler T&C. Those are the two I have most commonly seen it. In the last year of Mint car collecting, I have only seen ONE PERFECT Mint car and it was the orange 68/9? Corvette. All others seem to have some kind of paint imperfection, but nothing that looked like the metal was failing. I have had some old 1/64 cars (like from 90s or 2000s) cars that were affected as well. I crumbel them up and save the wheels and any parts that are salvageable.

I understand it as two separate conditions. The metal failing ("rot")is characterized by a more pimply surface and actual failure of the metal - kinda looks like rust bubbles on a real car. The metal will eventually crumble. And then I see simple paint rash, that looks like the paint process had some impurities or didn't get cleaned perfectly before it was painted. I had a CMW mercury fall completely apart. But most of hte cars I have now just look like areas of tiny little paint imperfections. They may all crumble eventually. And both of these conditions can happen when cars are left in box as well as out. So a non displayed car may show some paint rash even though it's been in the box. Best practice, as I understand it, is to wax the paint periodically, like a real car, to keep the paint as supple as possible. I think Goerge Bojaciuk wrote the article I read. I have seen the DM cars listed with some really bad hoods, where it looks like the metal is almost to point of failure.

This is out of my friend's collection. Both rear wheels were broken off the axle. I removed the body (easier than most Mint cars), removed the axle. Drilled both parts and added rods to hold it together. And fell in love with the look of the car. This one will be staying with us for a while. No hurry to sell it. Lol

I have the rally version of this kit. Same tires I think. I hope mine comes out as nice as yours. I've had it for years and work on it every 2 or 3 years for a while. I think the last hold up is painting the body. I was living in a place where I couldn't spray. Time to get it out again come spring maybe.

I really like the Aoshima kits I've built in the past. THey are only company doing Honda 600 Shadow motorcycles - it's the Steed 400 in the home market, but same motorcycle. I built a few of those when I owned a 600 Shadow. And weren't they the company making the American Satco trucks? Pathfinder and 4 runner?

I know I am supposed to be in awestruck wonder whenever I see or hear Countach, but dang, I think that may one of the ugliest cars ever. BUT... I do enjoy a good build and Dann has never let me down. Kinda like binge watching a tv series that isn't finshed yet. You get to the end of the latest season and can't wait to see what happens on the other side of the cliffhanger. And I always learn something from Dann. Great point on varying the panel lines depending on how they are part of the body.

Loving these old Buicks!

I have several of those for that same purpose (to redo). Haven't actually opened any yet though.
-
That's what I call it too, now. Just didn't want it to seem like I was hi jacking your term.

We don't have that service here. Yet. That I know of. Folks around here too tight to pay and extra fees for the service. But I bet that is a mess.

Our local WalMart has only recently put out 2016 AutoWorld 1/64 diecasts, so maybe in 2024, we'll get the model kits? The toy car aisle there is a sad place. they put out the JDM 1/64 and 1/24 last year and this is just NOT the region for those. So they sit and they will not put out anything new til those are sold? I hate that store so much for so many reasons. Anytime there is something that sells better than something else, they seem to intentionally stop carrying it or let the stock be depleted for months so you will buy another brand they want you to buy. When asked, a manager person said they want to let their other "partners" sell their goods for a while. And recently, you can't shop without having to go around or behind the employees stocking shelves. Every aisle is blocked by stock people in the early evenings - like at 5 pm. Oh, I gotta go take a pill now....lol

existential modeling
randyc replied to STYRENE-SURFER's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I grew up with uncles who were constantly fiddling with real cars. And one that built models. And I played with Hot Wheels. Not sure I really try to replicate a particular car. Mostly, I get an idea for a car and try to build it. I usually do scour the internet for other models and real cars for details. And mostly use what's in the box. I have scratchbuilt in the past and tried to superdetail, but it just isn't as much fun (to me) as just painting whats in the box to the best of my ability and assembling it in the colors I like. I do have previous mechanical experience of the backyard sort. That helps recognize the parts and kinda know what they really look like and maybe how they should be mounted. And how suspensions work and such. Seems silly to build a model that would have no room for the wheels to actually steer the car. But I'm sure I have. I have painted my 1:1 motorcycles using spray cans from what I learned with models. Have also done all the prep work for resprays on cars and bikes and let a real body shop spray them. I love looking at real cars - not sure I would really want to own a real project car at this point in my life. I do like buying and building replicas though. I just like "toy cars"... -
Sweet cars. What is that middle one?

I don't remember any of those in my set. Mine might have been a 50s set? The 67 Mustang might be Franklin Mint instead. I have the FM 60s set in 1/43.
-
I have an orange Torino built up in Todd's stuff if anyone needs it. Shoot me a PM and we'll see if we can work it out. I haven't looked at it much - I'm sure it's the pre-built edition, since I didn't build it for him. I don't think it has a box or anything. Just needs a new home.
-
That would look extra good with some detailing on wheels and grille.
-
I have the Gulf car as well. I have it displayed with my Jouef GT40 Gulf car. The Beanstalk car is nice, even if it is basically worthless. They may have done a Mustang as well.
-
Those are nice GT40s. I have 1/18 Jouef and a 1/43 from someone. Both in Gulf colors. Would love to have an affordable 1/24

We got DGs about every third mile it seems. LOL. My wife LOVES DG. WE have one about 2 miles from house. We call it the "white Plains WalMart". We live in White Plains, NC community.
