  1. Related, my mind is blown at the concept of cars-at speed-on the 405. In my previous life I-405 was my "local neighborhood street". Speeding was anything above 35 mph. Guess things may have changed.
  2. I paid $2222 for a near new standard Beetle in 1973 from a dealer in Portsmouth, NH. Shoulda held onto it? (Ahhh, no. ?)
  3. I talked with some guys who drove the Dodge Aspen sedans in '77-78. Had a 360 c.i. V-8 and they had nothing but platitudes. Then this...abomination. We also tried Ford Fairmonts with 302 V-8s (completely out of breath at 95 and the most cheezy/plastic/cheap interior) and 79 Camaros which weren't all that bad except every last one spun their bearings at least once. Autos of the 1970s-be glad you missed them.
  4. Maybe some potential with a model. The 1-to-1: no. Smog strangled 318 c.i., light bar, several hundred lbs of extra dead weight-pretty much everything behind the passenger seat. Max speed, hurricane tailwind aided, downhill=75mph. Sergeants had to give direct orders for them to be taken on patrol. Can confirm. I'd build one just so I could blow it up.
  5. Sorry, I was a Squadron Shop kinda guy.
  6. Separate, but related: I recall reading an article in the mid-late '70s (Motor Trend-Car & Driver? One of the "mens" magazines like True or Saga?) that cops assigned to traffic enforcement in Hawaii got re-imbursed for use of their private cars. A number of them had Gran Prix's and Monte Carlos with Corvette engines installed at a dealer in Portland, OR and shipped over. So there was a whole flock of unmarked traffic car with nothing outward but a little blue bubble light.
  7. Waiting to see my first. I agree about the price jacking but honestly, did anyone expect anything else? I recall the 2005 Mustang refresh when I went in to look it over. The salesman offered it to me for only $5K over sticker-for a V-6. Hard pass. I'll have to see it in the flesh (carbon, fiberglas?) but it greatly resembles any of a number of rear engine sports cars. Not that that's a bad thing.
  8. Not really surprising. Referencing a 50+ year old tv show that even in syndication probably hasn't been widely available in 20 years. They'd still have to pay royalties no doubt.
  9. Don't be such a pessimist. $35 million or so and you can have one to call your very own.
  10. Its on the 2nd page, about 1/3rd of the way down. Along with that 2/3rds of the way down are suggestions for actually constructing your very own one. (Come on, people. "Be excellent to each other.")
  11. The honorific here would be "luxobarge".
  12. I'm no expert but I think that's a 1972 Mk IV. Opera windows, vinyl top! Hopefully it has the crushed velour upholstery. Just screams '70s kitsch. Probably diesels when you shut it off when its hot. That's very well cared for. You don't see them present that nicely even in its homeland.
  13. A luggage rack, along with Buz and Tod. And some really smashing theme music. I believe I read somewhere that what we have here is closer to the true color of the "hero car". It was assumed to be red but that didn't photograph well in B&W film.
  14. I think you're going to find that is a later model Ural-orignally made with "liberated" machinery after the end of WWII. Made in Russia and been sold in the US (among other countries) since at least the early 2000's The newer iterations have a HORRIBLE reputation for build quality, reliability, etc.
  15. "Herkimer on Rt. 5S" Home of the Herkimer Battle Jitney? Get photos if you can.
  16. Where was the photo taken? Looks like Northern Italy. Also 400,000 km and its not a diesel. Impressive.
  17. Any chance of a full bumper grill without any medallions or logos? The Chaparral trans am cars had none and that's about the only Camaro I'd be thinking of.
  18. Its a niche subject but I found a large number of color photos of the 1954 Bonneville speed meeting on the Life magazine/Google photos archive. Good for ideas, see if you can find what can only be described as a "pod racer". http://images.google.com/hosted/life/dc88f094dd666778.html Let me add a gallery of b & w photos from the 1953 meet http://images.google.com/hosted/life/ef1c5df295f55494.html
  19. If so, definitely on the downhill stretch south from the summit. I'd hate to contemplate the speed going uphill from Los Gatos.?
  20. "Where were you in '62?" These are actually my neighbor's vehicles. He's the kind of guy who you'd WANT to buy a car from. He's restored at least 10-15 cars that I know of, including the scoot and the Ranchero. The scoot is for sale if you'rr interested. Note: 98% of his business is insurance and he's VERY picky regarding bail bonds.
  21. He can be forgiven for using more than one parking spot.
  22. Reminds me of the time I saw a biker club going down Market St in San Francisco, in February, every man jack of them wearing kilts. Brrrr
