What are your 2016 building plans.
charlie8575 replied to B-Ram's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've been able to get a decent model done in as little as about ten hours. I still have projects I've been working on since junior high school. It's all relative. Charlie Larkin -
Buick Avista Concept
charlie8575 replied to robiwon's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'd buy one- probably used, but I'd buy one. One of the better-looking designs to come from GM in recent memory. Joe, where did you see the new Caravan/T&C? Charlie Larkin -
WHERE DO YOU BUILD
charlie8575 replied to bubbaman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
A Humbrol work station (nice product) on a wobbly tray table. Upon finishing getting my bedroom completely de-screwed up, I intend to have a small desk to build on. I'm going to see if I can work in a spray booth, too. I have the squirrel cage, just need to build the box and rig up the exhaust. There is a small chance I might be able to re-escape my parents' house again. If that's so, I have some real possibilities. Charlie Larkin -

As much as possible, as well as possible. Charlie Larkin -
Okay....I'm sold. Someday, Scott, I'll have to trek out to Minneapolis and try what sounds like the world's only edible lutefisk! How far are you from Burnsville? I have free room there courtesy of a friend. Gives me ideas for a khema t-shirt (the Armenian version of steak tartare, and subject to its own jokes.) Charlie Larkin

I remember reading about the red car being needed to stand out against the desert, which makes perfect sense. As to my query about the symbolism of a Valiant...maybe all my time involved in Masonry makes me look at the world through emblems and symbols, and not mere chance. With that said, I think you're right...we'll never know the real answer, but I think, whether accidental or deliberate, when you stop to consider the entire movie, it's a brilliant choice. Ferrari's spin-off into a separate company is the most plausible explanation for the contract cessation; I suspect this will get rectified quickly as it's probably a significant source of revenue. Curious, though. Why Maserati, too? Did they also get spun off, or is this Fiat being idiotic? Charlie Larkin

To be fair, two feet is a decent amount of snow. Even here, two feet would make everything stop for a day or two. If it's the nasty wet, heavy stuff, like the three feet we got about a week and half before Christmas, 1992 (I remember, it screwed up several senior-year events,) well, it fell Friday night/Saturday morning, the state was pretty much shut down and even those it was over the weekend, we had no school for an additional two or three days to facilitate clean-up. 1992-93 was a terribly snowy winter; we had nearly two weeks of snow days, and almost had senior year, which is traditionally a little short, extended. I think they might have given us an extra couple of days, but I don't remember now. Charlie Larkin

Given what appears to be the state of Atlanta, that might not be a bad thing. Charlie Larkin

Given the whole movie, I've often wondered if there was some symbolism in choosing a Valiant with its name. Another question- I once read someplace that the crashed truck and car were left at the bottom of that ravene (sp?) because they couldn't be retrieved safely. Does anyone know if that's true? If You Hit the Powerball Tonight...
charlie8575 replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That's actually a very good idea, Tony. Even if I got things going the way I want to with my own line of stuff, I've toyed with doing something very similar to that down the road for additional market coverage and support of the hobby. Charlie Larkin -

That requires out-of-the-box thinking. While it's not quite that simple, it's not that much more complicated. Charlie Larkin -

Well, I know I didn't win. But I was going to invest in my own firm, and do a lot of the stuff people think can't sell. After all- they're right. It can't sell. They won't make it! I have all the resources to make kits within an hour or so of my house, save for a decal supplier, so I'll go to Cartograf. Mark and I would be sitting down and have a long talk about subjects- I like a lot of his ideas. I'd even start offering some more large-scale stuff, and Harry would get the first one of each he was interested in. Beyond that, there would have been at least $150 million in various educational, medical and historical charity being supported, a house that isn't about to fall apart and my parents would be set forever. I might even buy a new car and a few toys, too. Another non-profit in Boston called the Highland Street Foundation does a program called Free Friday- 70 museums across Massachusetts open for free for the summer on Friday- 7 each week. I'd give them enough to expand it to all of New England. I have no wife, no girlfriend, no kids and very little family. So, my friends' children would have trusts that cover their college educations if they choose to go to college, or to help them start a business, buy a home, or invest. It must be used for some combination of those things- no crazy trips or 100" TV sets. But mostly, I'd invest it; I don't like calling attention to myself, and would still live a very low-key life. Good news all around. Best of luck with getting the magazine, and your back, straightened out completely. Charlie Larkin -
Is this too many models
charlie8575 replied to gray07's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I just did a mental count. About 200-250, counting some glue-bombs to rebuild. And a lot of them are in-progress, just need that last little push to do it. Not as bad as I feared. Charlie Larkin
