Wonder what's next from Round2 AMT ?
oldcarfan replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
In response to the idea of companies producing kits of current era cars and trucks, I understand that this is probably a risk for them. So how about this? There are producers in Japan and Korea and China making kits of modern day Japanese and German cars. They are rare here and when found they are expensive. Couldn't one of the American companies make a deal to act as importer, re-box them if necessary and bring them to us at a more reasonable price? Maybe tool up for left hand drive and other US specific parts if necessary. They would get more product and the producing company would get wider American market distribution. I seem to remember that Testors and maybe Revell or AMT(?) did this at times in the past with some Fujimi and Aoshima kits. That would give them some modern day kits to sell at a relatively low initial investment. Most of our companies are already producing and importing their current kits from China anyway. This would probably be more complicated than I think, but it's an idea. -
Willys Woody 1941

I would love to see a resin body made available. I looked at doing this a long time ago and decided that it wasn't in my skill set. Good job, you've really created something special! -
Is the Revell single car trailer coming out?
oldcarfan replied to Nova-ss's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I wonder if we could talk them into releasing the trailer that came with the Midget a couple years ago as a separate kit? I can see it as the basis for a lot of interesting projects, i.e. small time drag or Bonneville teams, local short track racers hauler, utility trailers and such. I would guess the mold is already paid for, so maybe just the cost of packaging.... Just a thought! -
This is one of the kits I have been chasing for years. I have finally resolved to maybe just go for broke on eBay next income tax refund. I love these trucks!

What did you see on the road today?
oldcarfan replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Just came back to Austin from Corpus Christi. Apparently there was a car show down there this weekend. There was a steady convoy of hotrods, lowered pickup trucks and muscle cars all the way up I-37. I didn't realize there were so many 32 Fords around. I was driving, so I didn't get pics, but some of them looked pretty nice. -
Back to the future
oldcarfan replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Maybe Delorean'll be like Avanti. They kept making them for years after Studebaker went away. -
I like step side trucks and wanted to build a Chevy to go with my Fords. unfortunately they have been out of production for a while so prices are getting high. I came across a box in storage that had parts of several Monogram GM and Chevy truck kits including a step side bed that is I don't know how old. I combined them and came out with a whole Chevy except for the engine and the mirrors. I'm gonna call it done for now!

Cannonball Run 2016 "The Aussieball" Official Build Thread
oldcarfan replied to TFchronos's topic in Community Builds
If it's not too late, I'd like to join in. I have a couple of these unbuilt from a while back and have some ideas on an offroad version. Something like the second picture. -

No problem, and looking forward to seeing it! -
I bought a sheet of white Inkjet decal paper to make some stripes and it is very brittle. I know that there is a Microsol and a Microset product. What are the differences and which is used in what situation? Will one of these help the brittleness or do I need to spray a coat of clear on it before? I thought there might be a tutorial on these things, but didn't find one. Any ideas are appreciated.

Removing pre-decorated graphics
oldcarfan replied to Captain Obvious's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Is the body painted as well or is it just shiny plastic? If painted do you want to keep the paint intact and just get rid of the graphics? I would probably just put it in Purple Power and let that soak all my troubles away. That would strip everything off. An alternative might be to use oven cleaner but it is pretty messy. If you use either, use protection. Skin and lye don't mix well. If you just want to remove the graphics, fine sandpaper, a light touch and patience are your best bet. -
I've pretty much given up on the idea of finding one of Shawn Carpenter's 55-57 GMC conversions for AMTs Chevy truck. I am thinking about tackling one myself, but my scratchbuilding skills are moderate at best. Has anyone done this, or have any ideas on how it might be done. I think it would mostly be a new hood and grille. I could probably find the tailgate on one of MPCs old GMC kits.

I plan on getting a couple of these and of the Pinto wagon as well. Being the contrary way I am though, now that it is becoming available, I also want the '78 version also of the Volare and the hatchback version of the Pinto. I always want what I can't have!

Wonder who has the molds for this ?
oldcarfan replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I don't know, but I would love to have one. Did it have the VW chassis and engine? -

If it helps, I can give some details. I was trying to do it as a woodie, so I used thin model plywood, but you can use styrene as well, since a lot of them were built from aluminum sheet or plywood or whatever was at hand. I drew the plans freehand from a picture in an old magazine. They are really simple to make, basically a box with a curved top. I drew mine to be 4x8 feet, but some were longer. The fenders can be from an old car or store bought boat fenders or homemade. This is a grab from Google search, but can be blown up to scale easily enough. This is a paper kit, but could also be used as a pattern. I am working on another and hope to do a feature sometime in the future. -
Yup, tried Google Chrome and it works fine. Some kind of issue with FIreFox, apparently. How weird!
-
Help? Anyone here know what the issue is? I've tried the little I know how to do. I tried posting on a thread and suddenly I had triple posted. It's almost like the page isn't loading all the way, but every other website seems okay. I did this from my phone and it seems okay.

Trans Am Racing Series Kits
oldcarfan replied to Xingu's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
On this subject, a while back I was told Patto's Place of Australia has a lot of decals for these types of models, but their website seems impossible to navigate. Does anyone know how to search it and if they have decals for Trans Am? -

How about a Chevy or Ford engined Ferrari or Jag? My dad told me back in the day he knew a guy who had a Chevy small block in an XKE because he wanted a dependable car and he found out that the Chevy engine was also lighter. Mind you back then those were just old used cars. http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2016/05/09/engine-swap-a-bration-concorso-italiano-highlights-once-repowered-ferraris/

Trans Am Racing Series Kits
oldcarfan replied to Xingu's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The resin bodies are usually pretty good. Be aware however that some are better than others, they will require a good wash with a degreaser and some of them may have some pinholes and flaws that will need attention and some such as Jimmy Flintstone bodies are usually thicker than a styrene body which will require thinning. That being said, you get some cars that are not available any where else. The new Revell 67 Camaro body has the Minilites and the car itself lends itself well to modification for Trans Am. The Revell Monogram 70 Mustang also makes a good Follmer car with the Fred Cady decals if you can find them.
