1960 Ford Ranchero
Tom Geiger replied to Brizio's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Thanks Claude! The last three are mine, restored from old glue bombs of the original issues! The rest are the work of modelers back in the day.. cleaned up a bit, maybe replaced a missing part or two but kept them as the original builder intended! The folk art of our youth! -
A good lazy Sunday. It’s raining outside so I’m hanging in the model room. Christened the new spray booth and working on my Jeepster! It doesn’t get much better thanks this!

1960 Ford Ranchero
Tom Geiger replied to Brizio's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
That tool was probably cut back in 1960 as the 1961 Ranchero, it was recycled in 1962 as the customizing kit. Both were curbside kits. Move forward a decade and it was recycled with an open hood and Chevy V8 from the 1966 annual. As far as a tool, it suffers from body thickness and simple chassis of any early 1960s kit. Then it’s been messed with and run multiple times so there’s wear factors too. All told it’s a classic kit we are lucky is still around and a favorite of mine. I have a bunch of early customs I’ve collected. Also a builder from back in the day told me that in the days before sheet plastic was available for custom building, the bed cover from this kit was valuable as sheet plastic! -

I have set up a new Pace spray booth this week and I think you just addressed my two concerns.. I bought the booth that didn’t come with a self contained light. I thought I could use the two clamp on lights I used with my old booth, but they just won’t work. I will go looking for the magnetic light! And with a solid panel holding my exhaust in my window, my room is noticeably darker with less outdoor light. Your clear plexi panel would solve this ! Thank you!

AMT 1960 Ford ramp truck
Tom Geiger replied to BIGTRUCK's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Also, I want to see how well the 53 chassis works under the 60. I have a few 60-63s and a 58 resin body I’m planning to use this chassis under. Model on! -

Actually Chip has nothing to do with this truck! It was his father’s old shop truck that he had out in his yard that he was hoping to do something with someday. His staff “Overhauled” him and faked its theft and built it as a gift to him behind his back, just like they do to people on the show. You should be able to find the episode, worth watching! I love your take on this as much as your Caddy build!

Looks fun. I love making something from nothing! I’m watching -
Steve, the AMT 71 Duster is my favorite conversion. This shortening is so clean I didn’t even need to putty.

A funny story.. I was looking to get one of these for a while. Couldn’t find one at shows so I went to eBay. I’d bid on one through my bid sniper and wait.. I’d get outbid in the end! I did this one truck at a time for a few weeks. I got frustrated and bid on three at once.. and you can see what happened!

Back when these were new, my much younger cousin Teresa wanted to buy one. My father and I were recruited to assist. She had picked one out on the Potamkin Chevrolet lot. Seemed easy enough! What we didn’t know was that we had just walked into the worse buying experience of either of our lives! This was the worst dealer we had ever experience! Played every game. Even tried to ADD the rebate to the amount instead of subtracting it. Then came bad cop / good cop. As the tone turned to yelling and we got up to leave, a supposed sales manager appeared to calmly talk us down. We weren’t that emotionally invested but playing along and kicking each other under the desk. Finally we got to the price and terms we wanted. The car was being bought for cash so there was no financing to deal with. It was to be delivered the next evening. I wasn’t available so my dad went with her for what should’ve been a non-event. Nope! They said they rewrote the sales order because it was all messy with the negotiations all over it, but changed the numbers. My father wound up negotiating the deal all over again! Awful experience! A few months later I’m watching TV and John Stossel is doing an investigate report on car dealers with hidden camera. He says, “This dealer was dishonest and the salesman was deceptive the entire time.” I realize they are at our dealer and talking to our salesman! I immediately call my dad and he answers the phone laughing. He was watching the same show!

MCM Relaunch Update 08/2020

Note that editor Kidwell had Scale Auto planned out for the next year and writers working on that content. It’s only reasonable to assume some of this will be in Fine Scale. -
Yes! When I was 9 or 10 my parents were friends with a family that had three kids, two girls my sister’s age and a boy I believe was in high school. He was never there and the girls would go do girl things. I was sent to be in the boy’s room by myself. This was just fine with me, as he had a grand collection of MAD Magazine and associated books! I could read uninterrupted for hours!

It’s alive! Finished it today. I decided with this booth I would do real venting through a permanent vent! I got tired of opening the window and tossing flex duct out. It’s fit tight enough that there weren’t any leaks, then I taped the joints anyway. I’m happy! And the view outside. With the booth running. That’s a plastic board I had set aside for this purpose. Now onward to finishing some models!
