Need a car recommendation
Tom Geiger replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Wow! I'm only 6 miles from work and my cars never leave pavement, even in my driveway! Just a comment on the new vs used.... There are vehicles better bought new. Think Toyota, Honda, Jeep and other vehicles with a high resale value. Between preferred financing on new ones, and a near (if not above these days!) the original price, a new one can be cheaper. Plus you don't have to worry about who off roaded it to hell! And leases work like that too. A dozen years ago the company that assembled my office furniture worked out of leased Dodge Caravans. At replacement time they found that due to higher residual value, Honda minivans were actually cheaper to lease! These days, with shortages on just about everything, new cars are hard to get and being sold for over list. My local dealer has added a $15,000 sticker on the Broncos. Used ones are selling for what they cost new. I just saw a 2015 Hyundai Elantra with 115,000 miles in it on Facebook for $11,500... I own that same car I bought used in 2017 with 22,000 miles on it for (drum roll!) $11,500 cash! And with folks saying they'll wait out the current crisis, I say be cautious. All we need is for China to shut down Taiwan.. guess where all the semi-conductors are made? Cars may never be cheaper! -
Bingo! I hadn't been in Home Depot for a while. They had the Little Giant condensate pump I needed. I went to pay and it's all self service now! I had an issue paying because I had a gift card and wanted to pay the rest on my credit card... cashier helping me started out, "This is what YOU NEED TO DO..." I responded, "I'm the customer. I DON'T NEED TO DO ANYTHING!" I stood back and let her do the transaction. I'll be shopping at Lowes for now on! I do use a debit card for most everything. I might have $5 cash on me. Since I've been a consultant on 1099 work for years, I'm used to looking at all my expenditures for the year and seeing what's tax deductible. And when I do the sorts, it's fun to see how much I spent on beer, our favorite pub and Hobby Lobby for the year!

And in these times you'd think the sound of explosions would be repulsive! Between the recent shootings and the war in Ukraine, those sounds just aren't appropriate right now! I'm building out a floor of office space. This week we were framing offices and shooting studs into the floor slab. It can sound like gun fire. We did this on Thursday / Friday which are work from home days. I did send a notice to the entire building, for those who still choose to come into the office, so nobody would be alarmed!

"Trailer Park Limo-inspired" Lincoln Continental "Ranchero"
Tom Geiger replied to JTalmage's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Cool! I wasn't sure where you were going with it... fixed roof or a roadster pickup with removable top. Keep going this is gonna be cool! The good chuckle-- the glue blob on the hood. That kid must've been working with a bucket of glue! -

Very cool! I’m a sucker for personal history. It’s great to see your old car slowly appear on your work bench! -
Let's See Some Glue Bombs!
Tom Geiger replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Mrs. G never organizes, she just piles more doo doo on my bench and in my model room... anything that is mine, that she thinks is mine, or could possibly be mine gets piled and stacked in my spaces, to the point I have to shovel out to reach the bench. Her idea of cleaning and organizing the house! Completely demotivating when I decide I want to build for a half hour... and there's an hours worth of shoveling to be done! -
Buick Electra Wildcat EV Concept

This will be a big hit in China, where Buick is the cat's meow! -
My hassle of the week. The landlord has replaced the card reader access system in the building, employed it without notice. They used a 2-3 month old population list. So anyone (of three tenants) hired in last 3 months, or anyone granted further access during this period, suddenly doesn't have it.

Someone Explain This Sign to Me, Please.
Tom Geiger replied to Snake45's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Per the sign... my grandfather had a sense of humor. One time we all were at a resort that had a sign in each bathroom that said "Place All Solid Material In Waste Basket".... He wondered out loud... ? Us kids thought he was hilarious! Welcome back Snake. Live long and prosper! -
Um no... Don announced two rounds of "Last Call" to his customers. That resulted in orders that added a year to his retirement date. He's a class act. A man is allowed to retire.

AMT 1960 3-in-1 Ford F-100 Pickup Truck
Tom Geiger replied to rekcirb13's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
Steve, while you're pushing pickup ideas to Round 2... To complete the year run of Chevy pickups from 1955-59 is super easy. The '55 and '57 exist and provide the tool. 1956 is just a couple of emblems added to the '55 kit. 58 & 59 are minor changes to the cabs... maybe add a long wheelbase to one, NAPCO 4WD setup to another.... would be winners! -
Back when I lived in New Jersey I used to drive home on a single lane road that was 45 mph, went up a hill, and turned right sharply. It was a double yellow zone. Right past the sharp turn there was a 25 mph sign and of course a cop lurked right past that. I knew the deal so I'd be going the 45 or more, then I'd take my foot off the gas as I went up the hill to be going 25 as I passed the sign and hiding cop. One day I had an idiot on my tail. As I decelerated going up the hill I could see him cursing and flailing his arms around in my rear view mirror. The moment we hit the top of the hill, he pulls out across the double yellow and floors it around me... right into the arms of the waiting cop. It was a beautiful thing!

Let's See Some Glue Bombs!

I use Tamiya tape... especially good to use at critical points, like where the glass meets the body and A pillars. I will use painters blue tape on the inside of the glass. -
Atlantis Models has bought another lot of tooling/molds.....

Here's the Revell Nomad that I started in late 1980s. Still gives me an uneasy feeling in the bottom of my stomach! I think I'd rather work with the later date Revell 57 and combine it with their 56 Nomad and that would be easier than messing with this kit again -
Just wanted to answer some of the comments on my post above... First, this ship has sailed, the accident was 11 years ago. The Jag is long gone too. I did wind up not settling with the insurance company so they won. I never did fix the dent, but we drove the car that way until we sold it. This was during a rather complicated time in my life... I had just accepted a new job in Pennsylvania and had lived there a few months. I had a new job that was eating 50-60 hrs a week. I had two houses under renovation in New Jersey at the time... then kaboom! I got laid off. There I was paying three mortgages and no job! I didn't have the time or brain space to do anything in this matter. It's easy to say "so sue them". Quite another thing to actually do so. Attorneys do not accept small jobs like this "on contingency". What am I suing for? Less than $10 grand. I had one attorney call me back. He wanted a minimum payment (win or lose) of $10,000 payable up front as long as there was no court appearance. We had another potential law suit a few years ago. My daughter bought a house and had the septic system certified. It failed shortly after move in. Had another septic service look at it and they said the first company could not have possibly even looked it it, as it was crumbling.. complete malpractice. Contacted septic certification company. They offered us $2000 off a new septic system. When we threatened them, they pretty much brazenly said good luck finding an attorney who will take a $25000 case! And they were right. We couldn't find anyone willing to work with us. The winning were too slim for them to be bothered. Which is why insurance companies screw with people. Because they can.

Me thinks that this all is where some of that venture capital was invested!
