geetee66 Posted March 18, 2018 Posted March 18, 2018 I had a yellow '77 Golf mk1, years ago. It wasn't a GTi, but it was a great car. As a little break from '50's chrome, I've changed tack and given this a go. My plan is to slam it, widen the track and flare the arches. Paint will be old and a bit faded, like mine was and I'll stickerbomb it in a couple of places. Got the engine done today. It built up really well. Nice to build a kit with modern tooling. I added a basic fuel injection system and weathered it a bit.
geetee66 Posted March 18, 2018 Author Posted March 18, 2018 So, a quick build turned into a longer one after I deliberated over wheels. I ended up buying two sets from some dudes in Japan and one set from a matey in Ukraine. I can't decide whether to modify these Aoshima flared arches, or cut n wedge the body arches and blend them with filler. I'm using 14" wheels, as my research shows these are a popular choice with the Dub crowd. the Chrome rims are Aoshima and the resin ones are Scale Productions. Both have asymmetrical stance tyres.
Belugawrx Posted March 19, 2018 Posted March 19, 2018 Those chromes are nice, I'll watch this one... Cheers
Cool Hand Posted March 19, 2018 Posted March 19, 2018 Having only recently got into stanced cars in scale, I will be another to follow this build with great interest. Great detail work so far, look forward to watching the progression. USCP wheels get my vote.
espo Posted March 19, 2018 Posted March 19, 2018 Your engine compartment looks realistic, a slightly unkept look.
Jantrix Posted March 19, 2018 Posted March 19, 2018 Although I don't understand the stretched and cambered wheels, the work is quite excellent.
geetee66 Posted March 31, 2018 Author Posted March 31, 2018 After a lot of thought, I decided to make my own flared arches. The Aoshima ones were too big and I wanted to retain the original arch radius. a bit of suspension tweaks and it'll be sitting quite low on these 13's
CabDriver Posted April 1, 2018 Posted April 1, 2018 Nice building Guy! Looks great so far - the detail and weathering on that engine bay is GREAT! Where did you get the decals for the battery?

If you look close enough, you can even make out the tiny warning symbols.
Anglia105E Posted April 1, 2018 Posted April 1, 2018 Interesting build this one Guy..... I think the resin wheels look better than the Aoshima chrome ones. Nice work on the flared arches, and not easy to do. I was going to mention the battery decals but someone already has! David

geetee66 Posted April 17, 2018 Author Posted April 17, 2018 DISASTER!! I have just discovered that Vallejo acrylic paint, topped off with Klear, is way less durable than automotive paint. I was giving the Klear a wet-sand and the roof began to bubble. Then this happened ?
geetee66 Posted April 17, 2018 Author Posted April 17, 2018 I don't know. Maybe the Klear wasn't thick enough to protect the colour? Or maybe the surface needs a better key for the primer? It appears that the water got in through tiny pinholes, then bubbled up. I use a spot of detergent, when I wet sand, to lift the garbage away from the surface. Maybe anionic surfactants disagree with acrylics? I don't think I'll use acrylics for exteriors or anything which needs polishing, again.

milo1303s Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 As a VW nut Your engine bay is outstanding best one I've seen in scale but you missed the cold start valve fuel line lol Not a big fan of the flares but should look cool when done can't wait to see it underglass
Ich_Will Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 As another VW nut, looks like you could use some rust on those strut towers LOL. But in all seriousness, it looks great. I like the flares/stance. I can't wait to see the finished product.
89AKurt Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 Fun subject! Engine bay looks great. When the GTi first came out, I test drove one, was impressed. Had a '91 GLi for awhile, miss the engine growl. Bummer about the paint.
Dann Tier Posted April 18, 2018 Posted April 18, 2018 That engine bay looks unbelievably realistic!!!...well done!!!!
GerN Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 (edited) I only use Vallejo acrylic paint for interior fabric or leather - it has poor adhesion and strength, even over another acrylic. I've had good results with Model Master acrylics. Very good work on those flares. Edited April 19, 2018 by GerN
iamsuperdan Posted April 19, 2018 Posted April 19, 2018 As a former member of the local VW scene, I dig it. Even though I never got into the whole "stanced" thing. Your work is second to none so far. Want to see more!
geetee66 Posted April 20, 2018 Author Posted April 20, 2018 Thanks chaps! I'm glad you approve, especially those of you who have inside knowledge of the scene. I saved the paint disaster on the roof, with a stickerbomb decal. I'm pleased with the way it looks. It went down well, too. Got it from a geezer in Germany. The kit stripe decals were very good and a lot stronger than some I've used.
