Safire6 Posted April 7, 2018 Posted April 7, 2018 Just finished this a couple days ago. My dad had a 1960 (?) VW Bug for a few years in the mid-1960's. It was black with dark red interior. I remember at 5 or 6 years old riding in the car on short trips with my dad, mom and four brothers, two of us in the "pocket" behind the rear seat. I still remember the smell of the car's interior. When I see old un-restored VW Bugs at car shows I try to stick my head in and sniff-it usually brings back memories of riding in the pocket. This was built from the Revelle '68 Beetle kit. I hope you like it.
shoopdog Posted April 7, 2018 Posted April 7, 2018 Wow great job ,I especially like the interior. I'm working on the Tamiya 66 bug now and I can only hope it turns out as nice as yours.
PatW Posted April 7, 2018 Posted April 7, 2018 Superb job! Your story of going out with your family in the Beetle was similar to ours. I'd been made redundant from work and our two boys were small and not yet at school, so I picked up my mother and we all went to a local Safari Park for the day. We were riding through the Lion enclosure, when, looking in my rear view mirror was unable to see our youngest son who was about 2 years old. I wondered where he had gone so my Mother in the back seat looked over the back and Matthew was asleep on the engine cover, nice and warm. So the Lions didn't get him after all!
Renegade Posted April 7, 2018 Posted April 7, 2018 Very nice. Building your memories is part of the fun of modeling for me.
Foxer Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 That's a great story ... can't believe Two-In-The-Pocket . ehhe It's best when you build something you had ... looks good!
Mahogany Rush Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 (edited) Superb bug. Great job. Edited April 8, 2018 by Mahogany Rush
Anglia105E Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 Really nice build you have there Steve, and that is some top notch black paint job. It is all about the smell..... I understand that. Do you find the Revell kit of the Volkswagen Beetle to be as good as the Tamiya kit ? ( just curious ). David
89AKurt Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 How cool is this? Love the black on red. Did you use Bare Metal foil? Memories, isn't it amazing how we have the sense of smell logged into our memory bank? My dad's Mercedes with the wool upholstery, his Auto Union DKW with the two stroke and military canvas, my current 1969 Chevy pickup with gas fumes coming through the holes in the firewall. Too bad this is a Revell, only because the GSL Common Kit is Tamiya's Bug. It looks like a nice kit. My parents also owned not one, but two Beetles, before I was born, and am planning to start .... and finish next year.

Expand I was the second oldest of 5 boys. My two youngest brothers were probably 2 and 3 years old and just able to squeeze into the pocket. I remember at 6 or 7 I could barely fit back there. Very cozy! Thanks everyone!

I haven't tried BMF yet on anything but want to soon.

David Expand I've only built the Revelle kit so far, no experience with the Tamiya kit, yet David. Actual no experience building any Tamiya kits since I got back into the hobby last year. I assume that their quality is excellent? Steve
Anglia105E Posted April 8, 2018 Posted April 8, 2018 Yes Steve, the reason I ask is that I have recently completed the build of a Tamiya Morgan 4/4, and I am half way through building the Tamiya Jaguar MK II, which were the first two Tamiya builds for me. Previously my builds included Revell, Minicraft, Italeri and Emhar, but I have discovered the sheer quality of Tamiya kits in 1:24 scale. The way the parts fit together is so good that you could almost do without glue or any adhesive. The finished product when photographed can easily pass for a real car in the right lighting. Both the Morgan and the Jaguar tend to be expensive if purchased on Ebay, and they don't come up for sale very often. I am shortly about to build my first Heller kit and don't know what to expect, so it will be interesting to see how Heller compares with Revell and Tamiya. David

David Expand Hi David-thanks for the information, I'll look into the Tamiya kits and others. By the way, I see that you are from England. I have a 1972 Triumph TR6 that I've had since 1991. I finished a complete frame off restoration on it 8 years ago. I've been looking for a model kit for a TR6 for some time now but with no luck. I have a Lindberg kit for the Triumph GT6+ though that is still in the box. Do you (or anyone) know of anyone that makes a kit for the TR6 (any scale)?? Steve
