Greg Pugh Posted June 24, 2019 Posted June 24, 2019 (edited) I originally built this car as a 4th grader in 1986 and did a pretty good job (IMHO...Lol). When I got back into model building as an adult, I decided to redo it. I originally had painted it pink but I wanted to take it red the next go around. After the pink was removed and I got it in primer, I happened across a photo in an old issue of Hot Rod magazine and there was a primered '37 Chevy Coupe gasser in there and the project took a whole different path. So not only is this the model that has been in my possession the longest, it's also my oldest surviving build as it was the first one I completed when I returned to the hobby almost 20 years ago now. Ensis Ferrae Posted June 24, 2019 Posted June 24, 2019 No pics as of yet (as they aren't done yet) . . . but I think the oldest kits in my collection, by manufacturing date would have to be the Jo-Hann Mercedez-Benz 500k, or the Heller Bentley 4.5L "Blower" Le Mans racer (the Bentley has been redone, however my copy of the kit has the decal sheet for car #8 which raced at Le Mans, all the repops I've seen are car #18)
FordRodnKustom Posted June 24, 2019 Posted June 24, 2019 Cool thread! For me it's this old AMT '40 Ford modified. I built it around 1980 from memory and spare parts, no internet then! Still one of my favorites.
gtx6970 Posted June 24, 2019 Posted June 24, 2019 Oldest kit I have completed is my 1958 Bonneville I built this one maybe 3 or 4 years ago Oldest build by me is probably a toss up between my Sox and Martin Roadrunner and this old Monza . I think both were done mid 80s time frame ' ish '
'70 Grande Posted June 25, 2019 Posted June 25, 2019 It strikes me as funny that many of the "oldest" builds in this post are of the same kit; the 1/25 AMT 1968 Ford Shelby GT500 Mustang. This build of mine was originally done in the Fall of 1975, and then rebuilt in late-1989 as a GT-350 version.
Tom Geiger Posted June 25, 2019 Posted June 25, 2019 The oldest kit in my collection.... I didn't build it. And people have the nerve to complain about new kit releases today!
ChrisBcritter Posted June 25, 2019 Posted June 25, 2019 (edited) Just to cover the bases - Oldest kit in my collection, period: Revell '57 Country Squire. My oldest surviving build: MPC 1/20th '69 AMX; I put it together in the early '70s (got the kit second-hand from a junior-high classmate; it was missing the lower rear pan). My first and last attempt at a fade paint job . I guess it survived because the odd scale made me less likely to part it out. Honorable mention: Monogram Cord and Duesenberg phaeton and Lindberg Mercedes SSK that my dad built in the mid-'60s. Edited June 25, 2019 by ChrisBcritter

sflam123 Posted June 25, 2019 Posted June 25, 2019 As near as I can recall, these two models are approaching 57 years of existence in my collection. I had some health issues as a child and got to spend considerable time at Doctors and had occasional hospital stays. At 7 or so years of age, recovery at home was boring so my Dad started me building models to help pass the time. No, compared to the models of today they are not much to look at, but I wouldn't trade these two for the world!!
vamach1 Posted June 25, 2019 Posted June 25, 2019 Same kit too (except it's the Mini Exotics resin body) that I built sometime in the early 90's
TooOld Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 If by "oldest" you mean a survivor it's probably this one . Built sometime around 1971 it's of my first car , a '69 Cobra Jet Torino . As for the actual oldest model it's this all original Monogram Yellow Jacket sold in 1962 .
Deuces Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 The oldest kit I have is the Monogram Big "T".... ....and a Big "Drag".. I gotta get those out of the closet and take some pictures... ?
Jim N Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 I got back into the hobby in the 1980's and these are the first three I built. I do not recall the order.
Classicgas Posted June 26, 2019 Author Posted June 26, 2019 This is cool. For reference since there seems to be confusion, I am referring to the oldest built up you have, not necessarily the oldest tooling.
NOBLNG Posted June 26, 2019 Posted June 26, 2019 (edited) Built this maybe 15-20 years ago? I do know it was before I had internet, and I never knew anyone else who built models. The internet is wonderful for inspiration! I have no pictures of anything I built 50 years ago, and I can barely remember the ones that I did do! Edited June 26, 2019 by NOBLNG

spencer1984 Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 My oldest surviving build would have to be this Corvette, built sometime in the late 1980s. The Vette on the right is a rebuild of the same kit that I did a couple years ago: The oldest model I have as far as raw plastic would be this one, built from an original (and badly warped) 1958 promo: I think the oldest original/untouched kit in my collection is this AMT ZZR from 1966:
vintagedragcrazy Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 (edited) My oldest build its over 25 years ago dodge pulling truck! Edited June 27, 2019 by vintagedragcrazy
vintagedragcrazy Posted June 27, 2019 Posted June 27, 2019 My oldest kit in my builds dodge revellion! vince
