There was a "discussion" this morning about moving threads to different categories.  There's concern that people do not read some categories, especially ones down near the bottom of the list.  I have set my settings as  below:

My main default is at the top  "Unread Content"  (I circled it in red).  That brings up the menu below the ad,  "Unread Content"  (My first read arrow) and you can set all of these items, this is how I have mine set.  I want to see all items  and all content with an "unread" status.  I follow "everything" And for the time period of the past year.  I have it set so the newest posts appear at the top.

When I log into the board and I get the www.modecarsmag.com/forums  screen as above and see the Forum Categories,  all I do is hit that "Unread Content"  text (as I've circled) and I get the view I want.

And for those not aware, the icon (dot or star) preceding any topic... Star means it's a topic you have posted in.  Dot is a topic you hae not posted in.  A dark Star or Dot means you haven't read the latest post.  The light colored one means you have read the latest in that thread.

So how do you view the board?  Do you go down topic by topic?  Do you only read some topics and skip others?

It should be interesting to see!   Are things in different categories indeed lost and not seen?

Pretty much do the same thing.  My pet peeve is generic descriptions like "looking for a decal."  Would save us all time if the item wanted was in the subject line.

I do similar also.

BUT, I have noticed a difference in the amount of "looks" and comments depending on where I make a post.

IF I post a finished car in "Under Glass", I get almost twice as much traffic than if I had posted a pickup in the "Under Glass, Pickups, Vans,,," section. Years ago, when there wasn't the separation, I didn't notice this. It seemed to be fairly even.

I just find that odd as I build pickups in basically the same style I would a car.

I don't know why that is. Just stating my personal experience. Read of that what you will.

same here - clicking on the dot or the star goes to the last unread post, clicking on the title goes back to the first post in a topic.  A rough idea of the subject that the topic is posted in is helpful; but I'm not fussy if its in the "wrong" place.

I skip a whole bunch of topics!

I'm not interested in everything, and I only have so much time to spend on the forum, so when I log on, I quickly check the Off Topic Lounge, Car Kit News and Reviews, Car Aftermarket/Resin, Trading Post, Wanted, Under Glass, On the Workbench, Model Building Questions and Answers and General sections.

On very rare occasions, I'll visit an odd section, but for the most part, if there hasn't been a new post in the sections that I frequent since the last time I visited, I'll skip it........which is part of the reason why I spend almost no time at all on the SA forum! :D

I've created a custom stream, and selected the same as Tom's settings, but instead of the Time Period being set to Past 365 days, it is set to Since my last visit.

I've found that if I choose Unread Content, the topic I just read disappears when I go back to the menu since it isn't Unread anymore, and I see topics I didn't read by choice. By choosing since my last visit, only updated topics are shown, and I can go back and re-read/reply to the topic later. If you don't want to use the custom stream, you can use another one at any time or not use one at all.

I use my mouse and scroll down the whole board and stop at anything that I might find interesting. Works for me.

Ditto. But do try to see most that is here.

I usually visit about half a dozen of my regular sections, then click on the black dots next to the thread's subject line to see the latest posts since the last time I marked the site (or section) read. Sometimes I just hover my mouse over a title of the post and when the popup comes up, I check the first (if new post) or last (or I just want to see the latest post in that thread).

Once I'm done for the day, I click on "mark site read".

I also abhor threads with vague subject lines, and when people quote posts leaving multiple large photos in the quoted post. Come on people, do I really need to scroll through the same set of photos I already seen few times already!  And if I need to leave a photo in the quoted text, I resize it to a large thumbnail size (usually 200-400 pixels across).  It is not a rocket science, and it is a considerate thing to do.

With the exception of Off Topic lounge, these are exactly the ones that I frequent.

I sure don't see a lot of people heading to the Truck Stop, where my model building question was dumped from the Model Building Questions.

... except for those who can actually answer your question  <_<

I maneuver the board much the same way Tom describes. using the Unread Content feature, I can go right to the new posts, and find interesting discussions in areas I might not have otherwise visited.  When I first joined this forum back in the day. I was overwhelmed by they number of subforums, and found the Unread content feature very helpful.

Yeah, I guess you're right. That other 95% of members probably aren't capable of answering my difficult question.

If you ask how to modify a specific TRUCK kit, it belongs in the truck section. If you don't put it there yourself, expect it to get moved.

The Truck Stop section states that it's the place for "general truck talk", The Model Building Question section states that it is for " questions, answers, help, suggestions". Maybe you should be more specific about THAT!

I'm done, that's the last thing I'll say on the subject.

I pretty much look at new posts on the same subjects that many of you have mentioned. One difference is where I am when I view the forum. If I am at work, I either skip the under glass and workbench because my work blocks image sharing sites and many of you use Fotki, etc.  I wait until I get home to look at them. I never look at drag racing and only look at NASCAR if I see a subject line that interests me  (1960s -1974ish).

Maybe, maybe not.

I just don't understand the histrionics here... your active link still shows in the original area posted in but simply re-directs to the truck stop. Best of both worlds; lots of exposure, and now with the drama, even more.

There are many different types of modelers here with different interests. Logic certainly would dictate asking questions where the most knowledgeable  modelers would be lurking.

Makes perfect sense to me.

There are specific sections for a reason.

After running this by Dave, he thinks we can go ahead and leave truck related questions in the Q&A area as well. They just need to be tagged with "Truck" so the car folks can just skip over them. Since maybe 5% of the folks here use tags, mods will be adding the tags to the threads.

Wow, I never knew that the black dots would take me to the first unread post in a particular thread. I feel like a moron now. All the other boards I frequent, varying subjects, do it automatically if I'm logged in.
