Jonathan Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 Just wrapped up the Revell '68 Beetle. What a fun little kit to build! I'm sure there are concerns about accuracy for those who are true Beetle Aficionados, but for me, it was just a fun little kit. Besides, it's an old car, it might have parts from Beetles of different years on it! Might have been a little too aggressive with that low tire there on the driver's back. And a couple of in-progress shots: New to me techniques (or dumb luck; take your pick!): Based coated the body with Tamiya Red Brown, and various shades made by adding white, black, yellow, etc. to imply rust. Some bits of Tamiya Brown and Black Panel Wash along panel lines Testors Dull Cote More Tamiya Brown and Black Panel Line Wash Hairspray (I picked some gross stuff at the dollar store; which may or may not have been a mistake - boy did it stink!) Various light coats of Tamiya Yellow, lightened with white some Once the Yellow was dry, used an old brush (wet with water) to dab at the yellow in places where I thought rust would be most obvious. Testors Dull Cote Used a variety of oils (cheap, on clearance at the art store) to dab some earthy colors on the body and immediately wiped down with mineral spirits More wash in some areas Testors Dull Cote Touched up the "rust" in places And here we are ...
drodg Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 Nice job, being a proud owner of three in my past!
stitchdup Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 Pretty cool bug, I'm sure loads of us had a similar one at some time
bbowser Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 Very convincing job on the weathering! I had one that looked a lot like that
OldTrucker Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 This kit reminds me of some of the last standard beetles ( supers too ) that came out of the plant in Mexico. They were a mix of parts from the 60s and 70s.
VanSpence Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 That rust is legit. Amazing job and completely to scale. Love it.
Bucky Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 Superb job on the "People's Car". Just about every year's parts were interchangeable, so it would be totally believable in the 1:1 world. I've seen them similar to this sitting in backyards more than a few times!
89AKurt Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 That looks great, for a beater. I got hair spray from Dollar Tree, it said "perfume free" but it was enough to drop a horse.
Bucky Posted January 13, 2020 Posted January 13, 2020 "Perfume Free" means they didn't charge extra for the stinky stuff in the can! LoL
Cool Hand Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 As others have said, excellent job on the weathering, in the right setting it could pass as a 1:1.
Jonathan Posted January 14, 2020 Author Posted January 14, 2020 Thank you. I think I need to dirty the windows up a bit, but I'm not sure how to do that without ruining the clear plastic. And yes, that Dollar Tree hairspray ... ??
Belugawrx Posted January 14, 2020 Posted January 14, 2020 Nice job on that Jonathan ! As others have said, very realistic rust look?
Jonathan Posted January 19, 2020 Author Posted January 19, 2020 Thank you for the kind words! Now, on the another build ...
