bobthehobbyguy Posted March 7, 2020 Posted March 7, 2020 That is a fabulous paintjob. Looking forward tk more.
OldNYJim Posted March 15, 2020 Author Posted March 15, 2020 Thanks fellas! Just a little more progress on the paint...it takes a while because I like to clear between coats to make masking a little less risky - it would SUCK to get this far then have to start something over ?. Mixed up some candy green with Createx colors and shot the roof: And then today I started adding a little extra detail before I get to the rest of the candy coats...painted a little graveyard scene on the back end to fill that gap there: I used a pearl blue metallic for that part - I’m going for a purple shade for the main candy color for the lower portions of the body but I wanted some variations in the shades so this portion will have candy red over the top and the rest of the body will have a candy blue THEN a candy red to get the effect I’m hoping for. Once that was dry, painted some bats to continue the ridiculous theme I seem to have got myself into ? Those bats will be pretty subtle once the candy is on there I suspect, but it’s a cool little extra detail for people to notice hopefully... Next job is to start laying up the ‘real’ color - I can’t wait to see it looking more purple and crazy! ??

Modlbldr Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 Very intricate work on the paint. How did you make the mask? How did you cut out the spots you weeded? Later-

More soon! How did you make your stencils with a circut cutter?
Spex84 Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 I'd love to know what stencil material you used as well....as I now have access to a Cricut cutter The Grim-pala is looking amazing so far! Looking forward to seeing the final results of this ambitious painting process.

Looking forward to seeing the final results of this ambitious painting process. Thanks for all the interest fellas! I’m using a Silhouette Portrait cutter with Oramask 813 masking film. Nothing too fancy about the process - just using the software bundled with the cutter to lay out the designs I need (or importing stock images that I’ve found online in the case of the reaper graphic), cutting the masks and then transferring them to the surface with a little piece of low-tack tape and weeding them ready for paint. ??
Modlbldr Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 Thanks for the info. Some day I am going to have to look into a cutter of some sort. Too many interesting things can be done with them. Later-
OldNYJim Posted March 15, 2020 Author Posted March 15, 2020 A little more today - shot a deep purple candy over everything that was meant to be purple, red orange and yellow candy over the flames, candy red over the lettering and then a coat of clear mixed with pearl blue Pearl Ex over all of that to make it flip and flop between black, purple and electric blue...cant seem to get any good pictures of the effect in the light here right now, but here’s a video in the meantime: Hope that works...can’t wait to see it with the clear over the top too!! ?
Scott8950 Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 The paint work is amazing and a street freak impala wagon is too cool.
Nazz Posted March 15, 2020 Posted March 15, 2020 I'm lovin' the paint work! Nicely executed! Those aluminum wheels from Futuratraction?

Not sure on the wheels - traded for them with a user on here - I believe he keeps a stock of them for sale/trade: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/profile/13331-vintagedragcrazy/ 1 hour ago, Scott8950 said: The paint work is amazing and a street freak impala wagon is too cool. OldNYJim Posted March 16, 2020 Author Posted March 16, 2020 Some pics, after I finished the last little bit of airbrushing before I can clear this thing: Pretty pleased with how it turned out so far!
Gizzy Posted March 16, 2020 Posted March 16, 2020 (edited) Looking good ? Edited March 16, 2020 by Gizzy

A little work on the frame today - cut some masks after laying down a base coat of silver: And I figured with this thing sitting so high it would be cool to have a kinda space/galaxy kind of look under there. Laid down some space-looking blacks, blues, pinks and purples with a splattering of white and blue stars: Then added some depth and shadow: Then removed the remaining masks and shot some blue and purple candies over all that: I’m going to add some more of the splattered stars to the frame rails once it’s all dry and I can mask it - but I’m pretty pleased with how ridiculous it looks...gonna be a LOT of colors and stuff to look at on this one! More soon!
Scott8950 Posted March 19, 2020 Posted March 19, 2020 That paint work is absolutely awesome. It looks like something youd see at the world of wheels with over the top paint work... Nice job can't wait to see it finished.
OldNYJim Posted March 23, 2020 Author Posted March 23, 2020 Thanks fellas! A tiny bit of progress - gave the body and chassis a handful of coats of clear so I can polish out all the lumps and bumps from the airbrushing: And did some work on the engine - I wanted a coffin shaped blower scoop (like this thing wasn’t dumb enough already) so I designed one and had the cutter cut it: Should be a pretty wild looking engine once I start getting some paint and detail on there: That scoop looks RIDICULOUS here, but it looks just right (or just wrong enough) with the engine in the car. More soon!
NOBLNG Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 That is absolutely gorgeous...in a goulish demented way!? Seriously man, your talents are second to none!
alan barton Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 Hey Jim, another option for a coffin shaped scoop would be the body from a Hot Wheels Rigor Motor 1/64th toy. It was Mattel's take on Grandpa's Dragula from the Munsters TV show and it has some nice detail. Love the insanity we are seeing here - don't stop now! Cheers Alan
