Just finished this one up before we move house. I built this back when it first came out and remembered enjoying it, now I had the chance to apply my more adult skills to it.

I've always thought the box art photo was great, so I tried to simulate that as much as possible. The extra roll bar braces were removed, the engine lowered, and a driver figure added, as well as some wiring and plumbing. Built from the latest (2018) Round2 release of the kit, which finally includes the correct decals and a nice reference booklet.

412 Piranha LF

417 Piranha RF

421 Piranha LR

430 Piranha rear high

429 Piranha RR

427 Piranha driver R

Thanks for looking - comments and questions welcome.

It's not the easiest kit to build, either. Excellent work, sir! It has just the right look, about it. You're correct--the booklet is beautifully done. I was glad they added Walt Stevens' name to the decals.

I've read nothing but bad things about this kit so have stayed away from it. Your version looks great and the driver adds a lot to it. Nice job!

The detailing you did to this model really makes it outstanding. It's a relatively simple kit , your corrections to make it faithful to the actual car work. nice job !

Thanks for the compliments, everyone!

I really don't think the kit is all that bad, especially if judged in the context of the era it was released in. The tooling is showing it's age, but I didn't have any major issues with assembly apart from making things more complicated of my own accord.

However,  in looking at my finished model, as well as other Piranha builds, and comparing them to various photos of the real car, I've started to think that AMT didn't really get the proportions of the car correct. The body height, especially at the front, looks too tall to me and kind of robs the model of that really aggressive, raked look that the car should have. Maybe if I ever build another Piranha (ha!) I'll try to fix it - but of course that would really entail a major re-engineering of the whole model.

It did on the original issue.  As the chassis was cycled thru other kits, the lettering was removed from the valve covers.

Steve, very nicely done, great detail and well built

At least the recent re-issue gives you decals for the valve covers.

Cool! I just saw the actual car an hour ago at Don Garlits museum while visiting my son here in Florida. Wish now I’d have taken a pic! Nice work ??
