It’s those rabbit holes that’ll get ya!  I saw the Goodyear blimp on a show over Christmas and thought “how come that was never a kit?”.  

Turns out it was!  And it has an illuminated message display on it like the real one, and a (rudimentary) way to display your own messages…and now I’ve been watching blimp kits on eBay.

The Revell blimp kit was produced in two versions. They also had in the 50's a Navy version of the blimp.

Couldn't find the larger Revell Blimp picture but here are two of them, Glencoe was a Revell spin off.

I had the Navy blimp as a kid, hung it on a clothesline and used it as a target with my neighbors BB gun.

So I have a stash of 15, then I find 5 more hidden away...for a grand total of 20!

I was wondering if it was a bit insane doing this but I hear numbers like 200, 500, 1000 and Mr Van the big winner at 5000+

You guys are great. Now I know I don't have a stash, I only have an emergency buffer. I now know I am completely normal although a bit deficient in stash performance.

The wispers in my head saying Airfix Bentley, Tamiya Lotus 79, Gunze Cobra Daytona, NORMAL! The eBay siren chanting my name, NORMAL!

I'm canceling the therapist, thanks to you guys and guess what I'm doing with the money I just saved?

I'm actually a little concerned about the stashes.

How many of you have had the discussion with your spouse or loved ones?

What happens to the stash when you're gone?

 Wifey and the kids don't have any interest in models whatsoever. So when I go, do I want to leave her a stash of 200 + kits to deal with? Does she bother trying to sell them? Probably not. Probably just donates them somewhere. I doubt they would get tossed.

I don't think I'm going any time soon, I'm not even 50 yet. But part of me has thought about seriously downsizing.

Well, I don't feel so bad now. My stash is under 200 (I think). Almost all are more resent kits, lots of big rigs, 60-70s cars and a bunch of pickups/SUVs. 

My 1/8 scale stuff is the biggest space hog, I have those stashed under beds, in the shed, behind stuff, etc.

I've been looking for beneficiaries who would want my stuff...and are in a position to come get it... in the event of my untimely demise: models, real-car parts, real cars, machine tools and hand tools, etc.

My stash is down to about 45 ( all Cobras ). I have started to thin my stash down my selling some and I have built a few of them. As I get older I decided I need to think ahead so family is not stuck with them.

Somewhere around 450 build, 1200 unbuilt. Actually just started the process of thinning the collection, looking to sell off some duplicates and "it seemed like a good idea at the time" purchases.

As a suggestion following the above post:

Some time ago I purchased an entire estate sale of models and model kits. Was about 1300 items or so and took up the entire basement to store on shelves and in boxes. What a neat feeling to sell some of the items, give a number of them away to local modelers that I knew at the time, and, just enjoy looking at the box art. Then, one morning as I was looking at the new Fine Scale magazine issue, I came across a request for models to be sent overseas to our troops engaged in the Desert Storm war. I visited our local VFW and they were excited to be able to eventually send about 700 models out for us. Joyce and I were delivering additional models to the VFW on Saturday mornings and we were happy to send them. Some of the models were taken to a Veterans Hospital and that was good. I am suggesting that this would make a good option for you if you are considering what you want done with your model collection when you pass. Personally, I would not want my wife to have to handle the task and possibly have to meet people that would only want to take advantage of her in order to make a profit later. Please give the suggestion some consideration; I know that I feel good knowing ahead of time just where my model kits and supplies are going. ?

I'm single so I dont need to worry about it, but my sister would find something worthwhile to do with them. We both stayed at mums during lockdown and she saw how excited i got over some purchases, particulary the 1/24 scirocco I found. She has an idea what they are worth but she also does a lot of charity stuff for ms so I'm not worried. The way I see it, at the end of the day I'll be dead so it really doesn't matter to me, its not like I'll be building them in my coffin

I have went to Hobby Lobby and just enjoyed looking at the kits.  I enjoy looking at jewelry making section for things to use in model building..

You are a lean mean model building machine.  ?  I wish I could be as motivated as you to build more but until I have room to display more built kits it  is a shame to just put them away.

There's no question in my mind that it fills some emotional need(s).

Just taking out and looking through a vintage kit I had when I was a kid immediately takes me back to what I feel to have been better times, with memories so vivid, they could be from yesterday.

They also give me something to look forward to enjoying in the future when I have more free time, and I really believe that's helpful in maintaining a positive attitude despite advancing age.

And sometimes, when a new kit purchase is the result of having learned something new regarding automotive or aviation or railroad or maritime or military history, the additional opportunities for further learning help to keep my mind relatively young and agile. Learning new things is medically documented to have positive effects, at any age.

12, ALL old kits. I'm revisiting my childhood builds. Except I've added some 1/16 classic cars.................... And I absolutely won't pay what they want for a good condition Monogram 1/8 Big Deuce kit these days....
