magicmustang Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 (edited) Here's a project I just completed. I acquired a built IMC Ford GT Mark I off Ebay. Being the glue was over 40 years old and the chrome had not been scraped, it disassembled fairly easily. I had the front and rear panels from an old IMC GT40 MK IB kit and a set of Fred Cady decals for the MK IB. Wheels and tires are from the spare parts box. So I proceeded with the rebuild. I had tried to build one of these 45 years ago but my modelling talents were not up to it then. Never could get the steerable wheels, panels and doors to line up and all work back then. Got them all to work this time around. Let me know what you think. P.S: I only had four six spoke chrome wheels from an AMT Opel GT kit for this conversion. Could use one more for the spare tire if anyone has an extra in their parts stash. Got one on the way, thanks. Edited July 17, 2014 by magicmustang
Porscheman Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 Beautiful restoration!!! My dad bought this for me back in the 60's. The level of detail for the era was incredible, it was just a little too much for a 11 year old. I wish IMC had survived!
MeatMan Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 Sweet! i've always loved that car. I was just looking at a MkII for a future build. Yours makes me want it more even though it won't have the steerable wheels, etc.
unclescott58 Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 I've always heard the IMC Ford GTs were hard to build. Gerald, you did a very nice job on yours. So, is it true? Are they hard to build? Or just hard for most kids in the day to build? Scott
Dave B Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 That's a great save of a very ordinary kit!!! Dave B
magicmustang Posted July 16, 2014 Author Posted July 16, 2014 (edited) There is a lot of test fitting, sanding, and bending before painting. Then you get to do it again when gluing. It is definitely a level 3. Not for the faint of heart. Whoever designed the 10 piece exhaust system was a sadist. Gerald Edited July 16, 2014 by magicmustang
afx Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Nice build Gerald. I want to take on the IMC kit one of these days. Hope mine turns out as well as yours.
james460 Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Nice work. I had that car back in the day and it was way pass my modeling skills at the time. It's not the easiest kit to put together. Again really nice.
magicmustang Posted July 16, 2014 Author Posted July 16, 2014 Hey, here's a overhead pic of the insides.
bbowser Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Nice save. Isn't it rewarding to see how far your skills have improved over the years?
Modlbldr Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Beautiful build. I picked a sealed one of these up from a LHS last year for $15. I am a little apprehensive about building it but soon I will get up the courage. I hope it turns out half as nice. Later-
Ace-Garageguy Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 I've never seen one of these actually finished before, and to get such nice results from the restoration of a gluebomb is really impressive. Nice work. You've inspired me to look at building one of the ones I have on the shelf.
vamach1 Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 attachment=85610:Gulfimc 001.jpg] Yes - these kits can be a pain to build
