Observation of the day
Richard Bartrop replied to Maindrian Pace's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I picked up three plastic dispensers of bamboo toothpicks for a dollar. I just whittle the ends to whatever size and shape the job requires. -
That's the one that tweaked my memory as well. It turned out nice.

A '71 Riviera? Yes please! I'm a big fan of the fuselage era Mopars, and there's something about the Mercury Marauder X-100 that I really like. If we want to talk about European cars with big American V-8s: The Jensen Interceptor is probably the best known Jensen model, and it's beautiful to boot. The Iso Grifo. Come on, just look at that face. Do you think we could talk Heller into doing a Facel Vega? Seeing how neither Round 2 or Moebius want to do new car kits, maybe the best hope for new muscle cars is to keep reminding Revell's new owners that there are still all these Americans who want to throw fistfulls of money at them?

Excellent custom, and it's always nice to see a stock version.

Screwing up and dealing with it
Richard Bartrop replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Sometimes it's liberating, because you do end up with little things that you aren't happy with but you've already spent all this time getting this far, so when you do screw things up tot he point of a do over, you have an excuse to redo all those little things too. -
1/25 AMT 1925 Ford T -- Chopped Top
Richard Bartrop replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
You're reading more into the review than there is, and you're expended far more text on this than I have, and since we seem to be leaving the realm of rational discourse, I will leave you to your fun. -
Modeling for fun.....again!
Richard Bartrop replied to GaryR's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think the term "rivet counter" is more about people who nitpick other people's stuff, which, honestly, can get annoying. The people who are willing to sweat the small stuff on their own work, the results tend to speak for themselves. -
1/25 AMT 1925 Ford T -- Chopped Top
Richard Bartrop replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
In case you hadn't noticed, this is the car kit news and reviews section, so I gave a review. I outlined what I thought was useful to me, and what wasn't, based on my experiences with its previous incarnation. People are free to accept or reject those views as they see fit, and it you want to keep pretending this is the bit kit ever, go right ahead, but don't expect me to change my opinion. -
Screwing up and dealing with it

Been there, done that. I've done painting where the airbrush spits at the wrong time, or the frisket doesn't behave the way it should, and there's a week's work down the drain. And in the digital age, those days when you are in the zone, and so you forget to save, al afternoon and when the power goes down.... Funny thing is, if you can get past the discouragement, sometimes it's easier the second time around, because this time, you know how it's supposed to go. -

Some of you may have been following Roger Zimmerman's amazing Continantal build. It is equal parts inspiring and humbling, yet at the same time, I can see how some people might want to finish more than three builds in their lifetime. Life is too short to spend it worrying about how other people build their models. -
1/25 AMT 1925 Ford T -- Chopped Top
Richard Bartrop replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
True, but at that point, you might as well just bend a piece of Evergreen for the axle. My first computer was a Commodore 64. At the time, it was probably the best home computer you could get for the money, but nobody in his right mind would suggest that it is still the best computer ever, or that you should try watching Netflix on it. Yes the old kits have their appeal, but let's not pretend that they don't have their shortcomings. -
1/25 AMT 1925 Ford T -- Chopped Top
Richard Bartrop replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I think everyone here is well aware that the original kit is coming up on its 60th birthday., but the issues are still there, and if you're looking for kitbashing material, there are better options. -

No brake detail, and a big metal axle a big metal rod running right through it? Compared to the Revel offerings, I think horrible is a pretty good description. For all the time people have spent complaining about miniscule differences in body contours, if find it hard to believe that this doesn't leap out at people just the tiniest little bit. I don't think I'm being that picky, especially considering what Round 2 will be charging for that kit. But if you really can't see that, hey, go nuts. -

Richard Bartrop replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
On that, I agree, which why I'll be snapping up the roadster when it hits the shelves, enough though it will probably be in the neighbourhood of $45 Canadian when it arrives. On the other hand, I still have that chopped coupe body from the last Double T reissue that I haven't decided what to do with. As kitbashing material, the suspension pieces are pretty horrible, and the "Lincoln" engine doesn't really look like anything that ever graced the engine bay of any Ford Motor Company product. Steelies? If you're like me, you probably already have a pile of those, and most of them are better looking than what came with the Double T. Pad printed tires? AMT will sell me a pack without the rest for about half of what their kits go for. Decals aren't a deal breaker for me, but neither are they a selling point, and neither is the new box art. The chassis is a nice start for a hot rod, and I always seem to be scrounging headlights and supports for fenderless rods, and not enough kits offer cycle fenders., but is that worth what Round 2 is charging for kits, especially since I can probably scratch up the desired parts, or just wait a few months for Revell's very nice Model A to return. -

Hmmmmm....if it's just that, I'm going to have to think long and hard about that one, especially if it's priced like other Round 2 kits. -
It's a beautiful machine.

That's terrible. Why do people have to be that way? -
Crazy prices on the auction Bay.
Richard Bartrop replied to GMP440's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If it was about building, resin Coronets can be had for a fraction of what they want, which would support that it's more about the rarity, and of course, bragging rights about dropping four figures on a hunk of styrene. But hey, whatever floats your boat. -
Crazy prices on the auction Bay.
Richard Bartrop replied to GMP440's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm sure the rarity is a factor,. If you tell some people that they can't have something, then they want it that much more.. -

Richard Bartrop replied to GMP440's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If he wants to laugh at me for snagging some of the best car kits ever for about one fiftieth the price of a promo based kit from a manufacturer of middling quality, let him laugh. I know just how seriously I should take an opinion like that. Who wants things to change? The last thing I want is for the speculators and scam artists to turn their attention to the stuff I collect. I wouldn't have it any other way, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to shake my head at at some of their choices. -
This LaSalle grille from MCG arrived in the mail today. It's going into another attempt to recreate Jack Odbert's '36 convertible.
