Ollie's strike again
mikemodeler replied to GLMFAA1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Glad I didn't get to Ollie's today, I got a 15% off coupon in the mail late today. Will be going in that direction tomorrow so I hope to find something, but it has to be something I NEED, I am done buying kits for the sake of buying kits. -
Ollie's strike again
mikemodeler replied to GLMFAA1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My Ollie's is advertising as having models, will have to check it out. The wife wants to stop in today as she needs some kitchen related stuff, might be able to get a model if I am well behaved in the store! -
Scale Equipment LTD offered a mower deck for that tractor, as well as a snow plow blade.

Future of the hobby
mikemodeler replied to GaryR's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well, between the rumors of Revell raising prices some $10 or more, Tamiya setting fixed prices (MAP), Hobby Lobby shelves being empty of Revell kits, people hoarding Revell kits because they might not be available much longer, the average modeler age is growing and not enough youngsters are building kits today, I have resigned myself to throwing all of my model kits and supplies and tools away because I fear my hobby is dead. No, just kidding. I have never built models for others nor do I care if models are still around next year, next decade or next century. Instead of speculating on what will happen, rehashing what has happened, or regurgitating the same old, same old stories about the good old days and what YOU did, we should just build a model or two and enjoy the hobby. The future is bright if you see it that way, it isn't if you don't, it's that simple folks. -
The Japanese companies have a historical past of trying to fix pricing on their goods, not limited to plastic model kits. 30 years ago I bought a Mitsubishi TV and five years later I received a check from Mitsubishi as they had been found guilty of collusion (no politics!) with other manufacturers of pricing by the FTC. The same has happened in the auto parts industry and I believe others as well. As others have stated, could be a ruse by Internet Hobbies to drive sales, wouldn't surprise me if it was. Meanwhile, let's speculate some more on Revell!

Anyone buying Revell kits just in case?
mikemodeler replied to slusher's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Probably has a lot to do with the change in ownership and distribution. I suspect the new owners will get Hobby Lobby re-supplied as soon as they can seeing how they are the only large retailer selling Revell kits. Michaels and AC Moore stock them, just not in the variety nor does it seem they sell as well, IMO. -

I sincerely appreciate everything Don and Carol have done for our hobby but I highly doubt anyone will step up and buy the business. I spoke with Don two weeks ago and he sounded tired and ready for retirement, not sure he has it in him to teach someone the business if they were to sell it. At this point the best we can hope for is someone picks up part of their offering and continues the legacy. -

mikemodeler replied to slusher's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Why? As stated by many here, there are a ton out there. Kinda like the speculators who pushed a bunch of Dale Earnhardt stuff after he died when in fact there was Dale stuff everywhere for years after his death! -
Hobbico - BANKRUPT!
mikemodeler replied to niteowl7710's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Not real encouraging and I suspect that if it does come to be, places like Hobby Lobby will be the only place to buy a kit with the 40% off coupon being one way to ease the pain. It will have me re-thinking impulse purchases of Revell kits for parts, that is for sure. I have no problem paying a bit more for a kit that is all new tooling but for something that has been around for 25 years (like a '69 Camaro), I think they will see some push back by the hobby. I could see raising prices to cover their costs if there was a huge cost to purchase the Revell line, but we all know they got a relative bargain. It will be interesting to see what Round 2 and Moebius do with their kit pricing. -
Future of the hobby
mikemodeler replied to GaryR's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Between this thread and the one on Hobbico going bankrupt, one would think we are in dire straits with a bleak future for our hobby. I see some great things happening- resin casters using 3D printers to cast more accurate masters and giving us some awesome resin parts being a big one-and feel like it is a good time to be a modeler. Like most on here, I have plenty of models to last me two lifetimes so if there aren't any more new kits I am good to go. Whether we get new kits, Revell ships from Germany or China, Round 2 continues to spit out re-issues or not or if Moebius thrives with new owners, we should all focus on building kits. -
Hobbico - BANKRUPT!
mikemodeler replied to niteowl7710's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Don't sound the alarm just yet, nothing has been announced regarding distributing Revell products in the US. Good chances they will have a warehouse or some form of distribution here in the US, makes financial sense to do so. -

But don't let that stop a few here from speculating about they think will happen. -

I like it, the wide whites are perfect and nice color choice. -
I have a couple of his resin kits and they are very nice. As others have said, he sold off the paint business and concentrates on resin kits. Order without worry, he produces some nice resin kits.

Is NA$CAR for sale?
mikemodeler replied to 935k3's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Last year Marcus Smith approached Charlotte city leaders asking for the moon and stars (I wonder where he learned that tactic?) to build him a stadium for a Major League Soccer team and had yet to be awarded a franchise. The city asked a bunch of questions, mainly about his investment portion and when it was disclosed he didn't have much skin in the game, they decided it wasn't worth the risk. There were many who felt we (Charlotte taxpayers) missed out on a great opportunity to become a "World Class" city by not having a MLS team but after getting held up for upgrades to the football stadium and arena where the NBA team play, many of us let it be known that we were tired of paying for sports facilities for millionaires. If the Smith family were to buy NASCAR, I could see them trying to strong arm communities for track upgrades and tax breaks. Ironically enough, in today's Charlotte newspaper it was reported that the Smith family of racetracks (Speedway Motorsports Inc, a publicly traded company) reported a 7.4% DECLINE in revenue, so if they were to pursue NASCAR, rest assured that the France family is aware the numbers are working against them. Whatever the outcome, the reality is that NASCAR racing has definitely changed and whomever assumes control will have to find a way to make it relevant again if they want to see it return to the popularity it once held.
