I just hope that this kit sells well enough to let Round2 bring back the 4x4 version.

They probably got the axe in the early 1970's, as AMT was in trouble then. Look at the three Sand rail type Dune Buggies that were just detailed chassis with a couple extra parts added in. Desperate attempts to recycle old tooling without spending much (if any) tooling dollars. There was quite abit of that kind of thing going on then. I can see that some Promo Style Closed Hood Kits might have been scrapped just because they were not popular with many modelers then. Dennis Doty and Jim Keeler know much more about this than I do. I wish they would weigh in.

Cool! A great Tribute. -
I've just started watching the new series on AMC, Dark Winds. Another re-telling of a Tony Hillerman book, this version is dark, and draws you in like a magnet. But, the reason I bring it up, are the vehicles. Some great cars in this show, starting with the main star car of the show. A stock 70/71/72 GMC Suburban 4x4, it has a factory looking lift, that leaves the head lights about chest high. It is an awkward, stalky looking thing, in Black & White, with stark Tribal Police markings. It looks like you could use parts of the recent AMT Jimmy to start a conversion, but the tall suspension and Long Suburban body, make it unique. The are also two other cars so far that are neat. Jim Chee's 1970 El Camino and the other Tribal Police Car, a worn late 1960's 4 Door Chevy. I hope this series has enough 'legs' to interest a Diecaster into tooling up the Suburban at least. That Suburban has great screen presence.

I work with Truck Drivers and Oilfield Hands. We don't see him too often, and he usually gets run off when he does show up. The work is too hard, and badly paid for his kind to tolerate it for long.

Round 2/AMT 1977 Pinto - Super Loser (out of box)

I remember seeing those in a Magazine back in the day. They were "Special" showing that our obsession with Low Running Cost, Low/No Emission cars is at 40 years old. -
After doing a deep dive into the MPC Gran Prix kits via Drastic Plastic and Casey's Proboards Site, it looks like the GP kits did not change much from 68 to 72. Engine and Chassis look to be the same in all kits, which fits with MPC's Tooling & Kit practices. Interior Tub and Seats, and even the wheels appear to be little changed, although without seeing the parts it is hard to tell. The body tooling of course is updated for each new year, but it looks to me, like the changes on the kits were mostly just the Front End and Headlights. The extras (Ski Parts & Crutches, and for one year the Wild/mild 'Put-On' parts) stayed the same. I think that they might still be in the tool, hiding. I suspect that I am missing some details but the but looks to have had no major changes from 68 to 72. So, the Sweathogs tooling may contain more parts than we know. It might be worth a "One-Run-of-Fun" before trying to restore the body. But this is all pure speculation, and the tool may very well be either lost or unusable.
