Teracruzer with Missile and Command Crew by RENWAL
stavanzer replied to Dr. Cranky's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
I remember seeing a Teracruzer built up in FSM Many years ago, as a Oilfield Service Truck, as used in the Middle East. It was supposedly NOT a Whiffer, but I've never researched it enough to know for sure. -

1/16 Volkswagen Transporter Samba Bus
stavanzer replied to The Creative Explorer's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Just noticed, three different styles of Bumpers. None on the Chrome tree though. I wonder if there will be a US / California version kitted, with Chrome Bumpers and California Lic Plate decals. Be nice to have but I don't know it it will ever happen. What year excatly is this bus? My Folks had a new 62/63 Bus when I was born. Might be worth buying one of these kits to build for them. They called her "Boo Boo, the Baby Bus" They didn't sell her until I was about 11-12. I rember helping my dad rebuild the engine on the Kitchen table when In was 7-8 years old. It was the most "Interesting Thing" I'd ever seen, up until then. I remeber playing on the floor with the old Pistons, Conn Rods, and Wrist Pins. Wonderful stuff for an 8 yr old boy! -
Well, now the Volare, is coming after all. So, those of you an this forum who wished for one, will get it. Yea!

Wow, What IS that thing? Certainly scary looking as you said, Dave. That is about how I envision the Mack Truck Pumper to look. Thanks for some great inspiration.

Yeah, a Flameout and a Beverly Hillbillies truck are going to make a nice stock 1920's Fire engine. Either a Tractor/trailer with a towed Steam Pump, or on the back of the Olds. Not sure yet. Most likely going to be a Toad, as those steam pumps are HEAVY. But, I may try dual rims on the Olds and try to beef it up. In fact, a Monogram 1926 Mack might be a better base. Won't know until I have a Flameout in my grubby paws.

Revell and West Coast Customs
stavanzer replied to blubaja's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Like Wayne, I have no interest in those kits. But, as I have said before, I hope it sells like crazy. New Builders in a graying Hobby, and more $$$ in the till to invest in tooling for what I DO like. Way to go Revell. -
I'm thinking that the Running gear is from an M-4 High Speed Tractor. Built to haul Artillery Pieces, they were common after the war. Many of the Tracked Monster Trucks use this chassis, as it is (relatively) easy to find. The Running gear from both the tank and the tractor look very, very similar, so it is hard to know without asking.

Anyone have a review of the AMT '64 Impala 'Super Shaker'?
stavanzer replied to pharoah's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Thanks, Casey. That helps. It confirms that my next two kits will be the AMT '64 Impala and the Moebuis '61 Pontiac. -

1961 Chevrolet Pickup/ Long Bed, Stepside. Same Truck I learned to drive in. The 1963 VW Beetle was in the shop when I was born. My Dad still owns the truck, and he is still pissed at the Used Car Dealer in San Deigo who sold it to him in 1962, when he was discharged from the USN. The dealer cheated him by rolling back the Odometer, and hiding the bondo in the rear fenders. Dad found the Odo tampering within 6 months of buying the truck, and the Bondo, about 12 years later. I was about 11 years old then, and I still remember his freshly fueled anger at the dealer. 54 years ago, and if you ask today, my Dad will still go on about it, like it happened last week. It's funny. He is normally a very mellow, gentle, man. But he has this blindspot about this deal, and to this day, can't get over being ripped off. I hope to get the truck one day, and restore it. It still has it's circa 1962, Earl Schieb Forrest Green paint job. After finding the Bondo in the 1970's my Dad has refused to have it re-painted. It has become a point of honor with him in some way......... -
Thanks, dan. That helps.

Dan, is there any difference in the plastic between the two NASCAR kits? I have the Coke kit, but not the Bobby Allison kit. Just wondering I

Strange, I remember reading the Model Magazine reviews, at the time the "New" 57 came out, and do not remember any complaints about "Pie-Shaped" I DO remember there being much commentary at the time about the new kit and the Revell snapper, and who had gotten the Rear end/trunk area correct. If memory serves the educated consensus was the 'old' AMT was some what better than either new kit, but the trouble was not a 'showstopper' for either.

AMT 57 Chevy Bel Air Review Needed
stavanzer replied to CEKPETHO BCE's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
The Boyd's kit, does have some sloppy molding in it, but it does not look THAT bad to me, anyways. The lowered rear suspension is fully chromed, and has displaced so other parts on the chrome tree. The kit I have was given to me in a Ziploc bag, missing decals Instruction and the Boyd's wheels., It is missing some other parts (I have never bothered to check exactly which ones) and is being built as a Gasser/Street Freak car, with a Blown Small Block. -
No Problem Jeff. Of course I need to make two corrections, as others have helpfully pointed out. 1.It is and always has been an AMT kit. 2. The "really strange looking period 5-spoke mags" are in reality "factory AMC rallye wheels" as pointed out by Steve Milberry. I'm glad to learn that I what those wheels really are.

AMT Prestige '63 Corvette convertible
stavanzer replied to FordRodnKustom's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Yeah, I've got Three decent White Walls and one lousy one. Ah, well, an AMT Tires pack will fix that problem. -
Thanks, Steve M. I've learned more abouth this kit today, than ever before. Factory Rallye Wheels. Shows you how much I know about AMC's..........
-
Sorry, I was wrong. And they are sitting right behind me. What a goof. Anyway, the rest is correct.

I have two of this kit. It is Custom Only. Parts Fit is typical mid 70's MPC fit. (Sloppy) Detail is soft in some places, crisp in others. Great kits, IF you like the subject matter and are not scared of Dodgy Fit, and some off looking parts. Mine both have bunches of tire halves, and will be getting modern one piece AMT/MPC rubber when finished. There are 16 parts on the Chrome Tree. Plating is thin and fading on both my kits. Of the 16 parts, 4 are Wheels ,(really strange looking period 5-spoke mags) and 4 are Taillights. Grille, Two Headlights, Two Sidepipes, a Shifter, a Rear Sway Bar(?) and an alternator complete the chrome. Only options for the Body are window fillers for the Rear and Side windows. I really like this kit, and would have a bunch more if they fell into my lap. But you do have to both know what you are getting in the box (a decent, but not great MPC kit) and really like the subject matter. If you do, this is a Great Kit. If not, it is a huge PITA. Alan

Well, I know at least One Tire set that Revell could sell a ton of. The Oddball "Toyo?" tires from their Tuner Hondas/Acuras. With 4 sets of different wheels per kit, and only one set of tires, I have 18 sets of Tuner Wheels needing tires. You'll notice that as was mentioned earlier, that the Tuner Wheels ARE on a separate sprue. They could be marketed with that one sprue and 16 tires by themselves. Not sure if it would be worth taking the chance on for Revell, however. Might be more trouble than it's worth, as Gerry and Casey have already noted. Revell have tooled some really excellent tires lately. I'd buy just the tires, and go resin for the wheels, if I had to. At least the Tires would not require any changes in tooling to sell, by themselves. Since Round2 and Moebuis are have some luck with tires, I'd like to think Revell can be talked into doing it. However, a caveat. Should Revell listen to us, and take a chance on Tire packs, we are thus obligated to pony up, and buy truckloads of them, in order not to spook Revell going forward. If Revell overcomes their (justified) fear of Parts Packs, it be us 1% Online Modelers who shift the needle. It will be up to that same 1% to help it pay off.
