Full Flares, Big Spoiler, 5-spoke Mags, Bright Two-Tone Paint, Lame 1980's engine. The "All Flash, No Dash" look that was about all you could get in the '80's. That is when I graduated,(1981) so that is what I want to capture.

My Grandma had one of those, but she lives in West Covina. Is that close enough? Great Build! I really like the colour.

Beautiful build. I'll just never get used to those huge rollers under 1960's Iron, though.

This is just great. I'm a big fan of Tubs, too, and this one is just a homerun. I can't wait to see it complete. -
I'm going a completely different direction with my Volare, but seeing your;'s is an inspiration. Keep it up.

1968 Chevrolet El Camino SS Soap Box Derby II
stavanzer replied to regular guy's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Ah, Thanks. I read that and then forgot it. No Fun getting older. (sigh) -
If you watch old 1950's movies or TV, you'll note that the majority of the cars seen on the streets and freeways look like this one. The less expensive 'Plain Jane' cars always outsold their flashy brothers. Your build is a superb rendition of what the average American bought, when he bought a new car back then. This is an Outstanding Build! P.S. Bring Back the Dio. The plain background works well for this particular build, but not most of them.

RickRoller, as you probably already know, Revell is bringing back the RX-7 as a 2'n'1 kit. I'm on board for at least two of them.

1968 Chevrolet El Camino SS Soap Box Derby II

Thanks for sharing that pic, Casey. I had not really realized that the Soap Box Derby car was only six pieces. I wonder if Ronud2 found the original tool, or started fresh? -
As everyone else has said, Outstanding work. That colour works well on that kit.

Good to have you join us, Daryl. I'm glad you are here.

This car has to be seen in person to really appreciate the workmanship. I was awe struck when Daryl brought it over. It is really a superb build.

XR-6 (glue bomb restoration) Update 1/18/17
stavanzer replied to RancheroSteve's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Re, the Slant Six Engine. The late Bob Paeth told me the same the same story back in 2008, that Tom Geiger tells. Oddly he also included the detail about Chrysler not wanting it back, that Alan Barton mentions. I think there is a nugget of truth in here somewhere. Bob P. was telling the story gleefully, finding humor in the fact the same Real Engine served as a model for both Revell and AMT. -
I have two MIB XR-6 kits waiting for me to get up the courage to tackle them. You build looks great. It inspires me to dig my kits out.

Bill, Thanks for sharing all the good advice about 'Runners. Would the Revell '50 Olds make a good candidate for a 'Runner build? -

Revell 30 Model A Ford Production Halted?
stavanzer replied to Daddyfink's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
The ICM and Tamiya P-51 Fuselage have would mate exactly together. Even the location pins were in the same place. I've seen them test fit that way. There are differences though, I cannot remember what they were. -
James Warren lived across the street from us when I was growing up. (1974-1981) I remember seeing the sleek trailers that they towed the cars in. His garage wall was covered in the 'Peter Max" style March Meet posters that were all the rage back then. We lived on a Cul-de-sac, and when the races where happening, all the trucks, trailers and support vehicles (5 or 6 of them) would fill the thing. I remember my Dad getting Ticked Off because of all the noise and bustle. He was never very friendly , but I do remember looking at a couple of the race cars in his garage. They would sometimes work until late at night on the cars. Your build brings back many memories. Of Course the cars I remember seeing were all Front Motor, IMHO. There may have been some Rear Motor cars, but I don't recall them. Great Build.
