Grandt Line Going Out of Business
GaryR replied to Mike999's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Sad to say, but all forms of modeling seem in decline. Few young people are interested, older people are well, dying! Going the way of stamp collecting, coin collecting, ham radio and a zillion other things. Sure, some people will always pursue these things, but they are far less popular than they once were. Consider the large number of car vkits that were tooled 40 to 50 years ago! Time marches on! things change. -
Forgot I posted this! Fond memories, would love to go back!

T.R.O.G. style '30 roadster-updated 4/9 NSRA pick!!!
GaryR replied to Rocking Rodney Rat's topic in Model Cars
GREAT, truly inspired work. You really captured the look! And a curse upon anybody who says rat rod! Nice work. -
You didn't start anything! Others did. Those headers are much better I THINK! I'll follow this build, as I said, I love cars like this. Back "in the day" altereds were always an interesting and fun classes to watch. Everything from lightweight fuel burners, to gas burning sixes, lots of body styles too. Keep building! I LOVE THIS!

This is ridiculous! Simply silly. WOW! You found the exception to the rule! Woo woo! The OP seems to appreciate the advice and comments, again, WHY are you others so wound up? SOME AHRA classes permitted cycle wheels.I suggest you other defenders of the folks that didn't ask YOU to defend them know it alls ca,...................................CONSULT THE NHRA RULEBOOKS FOR THE PERIOD AND READ THAT CYCLE WHEELS ARE NOT PERMITTED! https://www.dropbox.com/sh/2006u57wp7sqpxt/eZJPZZcJdZ Last word to you guys. LOL How hard is that ya old grouches?? LOL

What's the One Part You Hoard?
GaryR replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I NEVER toss anything, no matter what. You never know. A list stuff is Hillborn SBC units. Any FI manifolds. Quick changes Tube axles Pretty much all vintage speed stuff. -
PERFECT! Everybody else calm down! Jeeez, obviously anybody can just build what they want, BUT OBVIOUSLY by posting it here you are inviting comments and suggestions. Why so defensive, it's NOT EVEN YOUR MODEL! The OP seems fine with it.

that dang TROUBLE MAKER....orange n' suped, a '40 gas coupe
GaryR replied to AC Norton's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Nice build, the detailing of the kit parts makes a huge improvement! COOL! -
Looking good, but I agree on the front wheels / tires. Altereds didn't run motorcycle wheels, you need Halibrands, spokes , mags or even steel wheels. I think the slicks should be smaller too. I assume you are going for a 60's build, nine ince M&H pie crusts would be right. Keep us posted, a very interesting build.

Altereds, before the AWB cars
GaryR replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That deuce is the Thurman Bros car, the last of the 32 altereds. Note the 32 frame. As I said earlier, roadsters and coups ran separate classes, by the time they were combined into altereds, the 32 was too heavy. Space frames and fiberglass bodies were taking over. At one point there were plenty of 32's and Model A's I have an old Hot Rod magazine somewhere that compares a dozen or so such cars,: body, chassis, engine, etc. This was 59-60 or so. The old steel bodies and stock chassis were vanishing, a purpose built car was quicker and faster than trying to modify 30's stockers. The web SUCKS when it comes to a lot of drag history, you need to peruse old magazines to see the cars. A LOT of research is necessary.Old magazines are readily available at swap meets etc.The March Meet always has at least two vendors with hundreds of old magazines. Web prices tend to be too high, in person prices are usually three for twenty bucks. -
Thanks. I did get an order in, I expect it to be shipped soon! USPS is BY FAR the most reliable!

Met him at the Buena Park Sale years ago, he was selling mint, uncirculated Drag Racing and Drag Strip magazines he got in lieu of payment back "in the day"> A very nice guy and what an eye! A VERY talented artist and photographer. RIP Tom.

Altereds, before the AWB cars
GaryR replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The dragster types aren't altereds. I know Klass has put them in the Altered section, but they are really "C" as in Competition coupes. Other dragster types are "MR" , modified roadsters and "R" roadsters. For years roadsters and coupes were in different classes, finally combined into..."A" Altered. There were also "F" classes and "FC" for alky / nitro cars, the "C" is for coupe. Plus a zillion variations at local tracks and non NHRA tracks. BACK WHEN DRAG RACING WAS COOL! GREAT DIVERSITY IN CARS AND CLASSES! -
How do they ship? I'm hoping by USPS, regular mail. UPS doesn't even TRY to deliver here in Van Nuys anymore. What's your experience? thanks!

1967 Pontiac Bonneville, More Mediocre Pics.
GaryR replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in Model Cars
WOW! FANTASTIC WORK! An amazing job, I'm knocked out. -
NICE! I hate the kit slicks, yours are right on! GREAT details, you nailed the Look!

I like it! Yeah it was a big car, the 66 Impala Jolly Green Giant was too. I know of an awb 64 Galaxie too. ANYTHING goes , or went (!) in those days. Boss302 mustang is correct, it was about weight transfer. Altering the WB back and front has the same effect as setting back the engine. I'd put a small block in it. By 66 there were 4 funny car classes, S/XS for blown, A&B &C for unblown , weight by CI. What the heck, go for it!
-
WOW! VERY,VERY COOL! I remember that car well and you NAILED IT!!!!!!!
-
Many cars didn't have the fronts centered in the wheel wells, the idea was to make the wheelbase longer, not shorter! I think that is more typical than not.
-
Steel wheels or the tires and wheels from the OLD Revell SWC Willys are period correct. The tires are from 1970 0r so. Otherwise, a GREAT JOB on a finicky fussy kit!

I thought it a good image myself, however: It's probably colorized, I don't know. It has a similar frame construction, that's why I chose it. For a ZILLION picture, go to George Klass Remembers. You'll see a huge variety of images, cars, construction, levels of sophistication and safety. Just for the record, I'd bet this car ran (on gas) in the 11's at 120 or so.
