Inspired by a current colour, quite popular on the GT2 and GT3. There is one coat of clear. A couple more would have helped with the shine for sure. Actually, the entire engine and transmission is mounted on a sub-frame, and the whole thing can be dropped out of the car in under an hour. I believe the Special Edition refers to a Japan only edition of the Boxster that came with the BBS-style mesh wheels colour matched to the car, the "Speedster" humps behind the seats...and probably some other stuff from the Porsche accessories catalog.

I don't think I ever posted this one before. Finished this one last summer. Went together well, as can be expected from a Tamiya kit. It's finished in Tamiya TS24 Purple with XF19 Sky Grey making up the interior. Added some carpet and seatbelts to this one. No engine in this kit, but that's okay with me, as you can't show off the engine on the real thing. This one reminded me that I need to mock up everything I build, as the ride height on this is unacceptable. Should have lowered iot significantly. The wheel center caps were painted, and decalled...and are somewhere on the workbench in the garage. I spent at least an hour looking for them, to no avail. I suppose they'll turn up at some point! Ah well.

Well, after a couple of years of this one kicking around the stash, and a few times trying to trade it away, I finally gave in and decided to build this. Figured it would be a nice easy kit to help me ease back in to building after surgery. It’s a pretty basic kit. It’s curbside, with minimal interior details. I didn't go crazy with this one. Actually, didn't add anything but glue and paint. Decided to do something a little different for colours; inspired by the Porsche Exclusive program. For the right amount of money, you send a colour sample, and Porsche will paint the car in that colour. For an equal amount of money, send a sample, and the leather will match your sample perfectly. I used to work for the local dealer, and we had ordered a few Exclusive cars. I wanted to build something that looked like it could have come through that program. I went with the totally adventurous and never before seen silver on the exterior. The paint is actually Tamiya's Gloss Aluminum, which is a pretty close match to Porsche's Arctic Silver. The interior is two colours, Tamiya's XF25 (Light Sea Grey) and XF23 (Light Blue.) Just like a real 964, the front bumper slats were warped, and also like the real thing, it's an easy fix. Anyway, here we are. Mirrors are a little off, but that's fine. Not my best work, but looks okay to me.

"Holy Grail" Models?
iamsuperdan replied to Billy Kingsley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I still need to find one of these. One of the only kits of 60s subject matter I want. Need to build a replica of my dad's old 66 Comet Cyclone. -
Changing Times, Changing Tastes
iamsuperdan replied to Richard Bartrop's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have some thoughts. I’m speaking for myself, but probably also speaking for a significant chunk of the “car guy” population. You older guys who love the cars of the 30s, 40s, and 50s are pining for the cars of your youth. The cars you grew up with and the cars you could afford, which is why in the past there has been such a large number of these cars at shows. It’s also why these are the cars that were kitted the most by model manufacturers. Now who are the people with the means to afford a car hobby? Is it the fixed income retired people? Nope. It’s guys like me. Guys in their 40s with a somewhat disposable income. But us 30 and 40 somethings for the most part, don’t pine for the 50s. We are after the cars of our youth; which means 70s, 80s, and possibly 90s. That’s why the number of cars from the mid-70s and newer are becoming more and more prevalent on the show circuit. Recent shows like Radwood are proving this. It’s not to say we don’t like and appreciate the older cars, but those aren’t what really get us going. And I think that if the modelling companies can’t see this and adapt, they will disappear. By rehashing old stuff, they are catering to a fan base that is quite literally dying off. As for the youth of today, what can they afford to buy? Definitely not cool cars from the 50s or 60s. They're buying basic transportation from the 90s and 2000s. There's a reason Hondas and Toyotas are popular among youth. It's what they can afford! And just wait until kinds like my daughter are old enough to start driving. Her generation may not even be able to buy domestic cars...because the domestics aren't building cars. It's all SUVs and trucks. Having said that, my soon to be 13 year old daughter wants a truck, and is still ticked that I sold my 97 Chev K1500. Locally, I'm thinking about the car shows I attended last summer. Lots of this stuff. And if you looks in the backgrounds of these pics, it's not all muscle and rods. -
Excellent job on both! Love this generation of Firebird/Camaro.

Favorite Obscure or Discovered Music Album
iamsuperdan replied to afx's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Speaking of Tom Waits covers, who else has heard (or actually has) Scarlett Johansson's album Anywhere I Lay My Head? She did an entire album of Tom Waits covers. And her voice probably doesn't sound like what you're expecting. I actually like the album. It's very atmospheric, kind of dark. Many though did not like this album. Or the followup she did with Pete Yorn. -
Coronavirus (Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson tested positive)

Yeah, but this virus is raging in Australia, and it's at the end of the summer season there right now. Much warmer that it ever gets here in NA. -
You don't have aerosmith tickets? Be a lot cooler if you did. Nice job on the car!
-
Great idea, excellent execution. Looks like it could have come from factory that way.

Coronavirus (Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson tested positive)
iamsuperdan replied to NYLIBUD's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I think the thought process is that by limiting human interaction, it will slow the spread of the virus. It's not a cure, but will hopefully slow the spread, giving WHO the opportunity to perfect an antidote or whatever. I theory, I agree, and think people should limit their interactions with others over the next few weeks. I don't mean become a hermit (although, I kind of like the idea of not interacting with people) but maybe avoid some of that non-essential stuff. Maybe skip going to a movie this weekend, or maybe you don't need to eat out as often. The big issue is currently the fact that it spreads so easily, not necessarily through physical contact. True, for most people, it isn't a killer. From what I've read, it seems like most of the deaths so far are people who had pre-existing conditions and weakened immune systems. And everyone diagnosed in Canada so far has travelled out of country in the past few weeks. It is pretty crazy when they start cancelling sports as much as they are. NHL, MLB, NBA; all halting games. F1, Curling, Figure skating; major events cancelled. F1 and PGA, no spectators allowed. The school closures will be the next step, followed by movie theatres. I don't think it will get to the point where borders will be closed. ALthough, at this point, I wouldn't be surprised. -

Hey everyone. Just a reminder that although discussing COVID-19 is just fine, there are a couple of posts that are getting borderline political. Please keep politics out of this. As this point, let's stick with what we know, and not focus on what has or hasn't been said/done by our political leaders. Thanks. -
I'm happy to see someone build an old and rare kit! These 70s boats are awesome, and the build is looking great.

That airbrushed Willys, that green Superbird...beautiful. And then I went through all of your pics, looking for more pics of the grey Corrado behind that weird rod thing you posted above with the leaned forward body. Alas, no VW love. ? Serious question...how do you manage to get pics of these cars with no people in the way?

The High Cost of the Hobby
iamsuperdan replied to Nitrobarry's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Compared to my kids' hobbies, my plastic is cheap! Having said that, I just can't bring myself to spend the money on a lot of aftermarket parts anymore. Resin parts, wiring, flocking, photoetch, etc. It all adds up. I still do it from time to time, depending on the kit, but I don't do it on everything anymore. Also, I'm trying to work through my stash instead of buying more kits. Trying. This plan isn;t working as well as I'd like! -
Excellent work! I like the extra details, such as the red detail on the alternator.
-
I like it! And your paint work is very period correct.

Very nicely done. wIsh I had that kind of know-how. My woodworking skills are limited to assembling Ikea shelves. -
Soundgarden. Zero Chance. Awesome song by an awesome band.

Looking great so far! That's actually a colour pretty close to Porsche's Zanzibar Red, which was a standard colour on the 996 generation cars.
