Porsche 911 Nomenclature
iamsuperdan replied to afx's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yeah, I lucked out and was working for Porsche when that was last released, so didn't have to spend an arm and a leg. These days...yikes! But it is truly an amazing read! -

For those wanting to really delve into it, another amazing book, which will blow your mind is this one. Excellence Was Expected, by Karl Ludvigsen. It's actually a three volume box set. It's not cheap, but if you're a Porsche fan, it gets no better than this. It tells the full story, up until about 2008 which is when it was updated and re-published. The original publishing was in 1977, and remains unchanged as part of the box set. -
What a ridiculous idea. I love it! A few years ago, I remember a big thing in the VW world were remote turbos. Great way to make room in the engine was to mount the turbos elsewhere. Maybe an idea here? Looking forward to seeing this done!

Porsche 911 Nomenclature
iamsuperdan replied to afx's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yeah, if you ask Porsche people though, the 964 Turbo is pretty much universally referred to as 965. From the Wiki: "The Porsche 969 was a concept based on the 964 platform. It was to be the successor of the 930 turbo model. The car was conceived in 1982, as a twin-turbo 911 with four-wheel drive and double-overhead camshafts. The project received the in-house code 965 and was developed along with the new, 964 generation of the 911." Having said that, all Turbo specific 964 parts are stamped 965. Which, following Porsche's parts numbering, would signify the model designation of 965. -

The 965 is the Turbo version of the 964. -

Porsche 964 RSR Driven Only 6 miles
iamsuperdan replied to afx's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well as the article says, the car will need an engine rebuild, replace all fluids, replace all seals, possibly piston rings. But I guess if you can afford the car, you can afford the maintenance to get it where it needs to be. The 964 is my fav generation of 911. I used to work for a Porsche dealer, and we used to see low km cars all the time. And after sitting for literally years, everything dried out. I remember a 964 C4 widebody. In 10 years, had done about 4000km, all in the first year. Had been parked for 9 years. Owner was being angry that his low km, pristine car need thousands in repairs, mainly to stop the myriad of leaks. SO with it still covered in the shipping wax, it's obvious this was originally ordered as an investment car. And sure enough, that's what's happening. I'd buy it, do the work, clean, and drive the nuts off of it. -
Beautiful build! Wouldn't change a thing.

I make trips down to Calgary specifically to hit PM Hobbycraft. And I'll usually head over to Chinook Hobbies as well, he always seems to have a decent selection. -
Anyone interested in this one?

I've always wondered about some of the wacky prices on Amazon. Let's see...here's the item I want, multiple options. $20. $21. $19. $1484. $20. Wait, what? -
This seems appropriate
iamsuperdan replied to Dave Ambrose's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
100% agree. I don't hyper-detail my builds, and I don't strive for historically accurate builds. I just build what I like to the best of my abilities. And when I see something I do that I am not happy with, I'll make the effort to fix it the next time around. And when it stops being fun, I'll be out. -

I would hope that Dann is using some sort of respirator or mask. Even if it's just one of those disposable white ones. -
Fantastic build!

I usually keep an end panel and the instructions. I don't have the space to keep empty boxes. I have one box that I throw spare parts into.

I probably speak for most of the Canadian members here when I say this. But I always laugh when our American friends talk about going to Michaels and getting kits and supplies, and discuss inventory and deals and what not. I was at Michaels today. Here's the model section. For automotive, and not including the snap kits, literally four options, and five kits total. Double it if you include the snap kits. Maybe another five or six if you add in the planes and helicopters. Needless to say, I do NOT come home with a score today.

You're right, that is a problem. I can help with that. Just feel free to box up that RX7 Convertible and the Jaguar TWR and send those my way. I'm sure with help from the community, we can get that shelf empty for you. -
Statement was actually "locked down as much as possible." Nothing on the internet is secure. Including this place.

Meh, I'm on FB. It's locked down as much as possible, and I've never had anything nefarious happen there. I spend more time with Instagram though. Not so many idiots. As for security...

Neil Young is a massive train "nerd" as well. If I recall, he actually bought, or bought a share of, Lionel trains, so he could help design a controller that his handicapped son could use. Here's his portable layout.
