  1. Unfortunately I have long since sold the Scamp. A major regret in my life. But we added a four door when the kids came and having the extra car when I was deploying so much, seemed pointless. Not to mention it seemed to be needing more and more TLC and as an E4 in the service, there wasn't a lot of spending money. It was a vinyl top car and if you have ever heard the old rumor that they put vinyl tops on cars with bad c-pillar welds, well with this car it was certainly true. I took the top off and found a port hole on either side. I really wish I could have found a way to keep it, but ............... alas. I drove a few diplomats in my brief stint as a county deputy here in FL, in the late 80's. Plenty of power. I'll agree they might have been tired, but very well maintained.
  2. In the early 1990s I picked up a 73 Plymouth Scamp for the tidy sum of $900. I drove it for several years and enjoyed it quite a lot but at some point there had to be a replacement for that little slant six. The plan was to find myself an old Dodge Diplomat police car and swap in the whole police package 318 or maybe a 360 if I was lucky. But when they cycled out of use they just disappeared. What happened to them? I've heard rumors that the government got involved and had all of them turned into razor blades because they didn't want those powerful little engines in the hands of 18 year olds. I don't know if it's true or not but all I know is I never could find any. I never saw any used as taxis either.
  3. Oh man. If this is the future of the hobby, I'm looking forward to it.
  4. I think BTD is on the right track. How about instead of the display case, use some cardboard to create a top with no room for the model to move, and about an inch wider than the car on either side. Tape the feet to the base. After the model is secure add side panels of cardboard. And then the whole thing taped securely. This could be your inner box. Surround the box with peanuts in a bigger box.
  5. I'd agreed with this.
  6. An awful lot of money spent on something tantamount to this.
  7. Nah, that's been done.
  8. Thanks everyone for the well wishes. I'll keep you guys posted on how things go. To say that I'm a little bit nervous (read- terrified) taking this chance, is an understatement. I like to live as stress free and uncomplicated a life as I can. It's just my nature. This is a huge risk. I spent nearly two years looking for permanent work when we moved to Jacksonville in '02. I hope this move goes smoother.
  9. As of right now, the plan is for my wife and sons (both grown and out of school) to move our household to Boise, Idaho when our lease ends on Oct. 31. We went up in March and we loved it. I've been shooting resume's up there but no bites yet. A call to a local temp agency tells me that no one is hiring from out of town because they don't want to pay relocation. So it's time to get there. I'll be staying in Tampa solo for a while until my wife and sons get jobs and settled and then I'll move myself. Gotta keep the paychecks coming while we do this. Frankly we're just not happy here anymore. We got decent jobs but it's just so darn crowded. 4.5 million people in Tampa Bay. The suburbs keep moving further and further out. Folks are driving an hour plus, just to live in an non-urban environment. And I'm finding that the older I get, the less tolerant I am of the humidity. I love to fish and camp out and do outdoor stuff, but the heat/humidity sucks every last bit of fun out of it. And a summer that starts in April and lasts until October doesn't help. Boise seems like a good location. Zero humidity, population 250,000. Hot in summer, cold in the winter, but mild snow due to geography. Tech jobs available. You can still buy land fairly cheaply. You don't have to be on top of your neighbor. 6 hours from Yellowstone, six hours from Oregon coast, four hours to Salt Lake (already planning a Speed Week trip with my brother in law) and depending how this election goes, just four hours to Canada. I'm just tired of the rut we're in. It feels like we're existing, but not really living. Our days go - traffic, work, traffic, eat, sleep, traffic, work etc, etc. The rat race. My wife wants to do a hobby farm. Build an aquaponics system (she is an irrigation guru, so she would rock this) and raise our own crops and maybe some cattle to keep us fed. I think it's time to take a chance and try living for a change. The downside is of course the risk, and leaving my folks here. They have local support so I'm not too worried, but it will be tough on my mom. They support our move though. Another regret, is all the pals I've made in the local modeling community. It's been a lot of fun. I hope to see everyone before I go, but we'll see how things pan out. If I don't see you before I leave, take care. Oh and moving is like kryptonite to my urge to build, so you likely won't see any progress on my builds.
  10. AMT '53 Corvette might have something like that? I have an intake from a BBC that has those Webers so I know the carbs are available. If you can find the carbs then any of the I6's would work for you.
  11. Honestly the '37 in-liner is the nicest Chevy six this side of a Galaxie kit. I have done the AMT 51, the Monogram '53 and the AMT '37. All are pretty good. Finding one in a drag car wasn't common, but not unheard of. I did a similar query before I did this.
  12. Amazing how that works isn't it? When they gripe about it, my reply is, "If you want me to put aside my own projects, it becomes work. $__ is my hourly rate at work."
  13. I'll respectfully disagree with this. I've seen box stock models win Best of Show. In my opinion it comes down to, 1. Is it built cleanly? 2. Is the finish outstanding? And by finish I mean the paint and decals on every single part. Those are the keys to winning at contest in a nutshell.
  14. Aerospace computer technician. Although that may be changing soon.
  15. Some great detailing going on here. Impressive.
  16. Sorry I haven't replied sooner. My two attempts to contact Ron via FB (which he uses regularly) have failed. I do not know why he refuses to reply, but there it is. I have offered to pick up the kit and mail it for him, so he has no excuse not to see this resolved. I have traded with Ron and seen him at shows (not lately) and he always seemed a straight shooter. He hasn't been on this forum since his last post in March. I don't know whats going on, but if I find out I'll let you know. I'm real sorry this has happened. I advise you continue to plague him with emails Casey.
  17. Model Master has green chromate in both enamel and acrylic in the bottles. If you are of the air brushing tribe, you're set. As for rattle cans, my google searches haven't turned up anything hobby-based.
  18. Wow. That looks like it has some history.
  19. I wrote this last year about how to be competitive at contests. Check it out if you've a mind to. It covers a lot of whats been mentioned and some other stuff.
  20. Another winner Chuck. Great job.
  21. Yes. To the Tupperware. A one gallon food container works great. Keep the lid tight on it, it does evaporate. I have dissolved aluminum in Super Clean before so I'd be wary using metal.
  22. Yep. What he said.
  23. Well frankly it was meant to be sarcastic. I guess not everyone got that because of the silly emoticon. BUT, some of these posts seem to give an impression that the folks with phones and tats are somehow lesser/inferior/weaker than those that do not. Perhaps that's not the intent of the writer but they do come off that way. Just because I am open to critique doesn't mean I won't speak my mind when I disagree. 88 times? For me, personally, yeah that's high by at least 50. For my kids, I'd say it's on target. I never really was into smart phones until the utility of them because apparent. The use of GPS and apps that can tell you where the cheapest gas is, and a really decent camera built in, is a no-brainer. I do a LOT of communication with my co-workers at work. Texting is the best for that. Smart phones can let a whole group get on the same page with a single text regardless of where they are on the campus. My smart phone means I ALWAYS have a 40% off coupon for Michaels/Hobby Lobby. You folks can ignore the new TOOL on the market if you want to, but it doesn't make you better at anything.
  24. I have tattoos. And a smart phone. I use the GPS. I have taken a selfie or two at the Snake River, and I use Facebook. If anyone has a problem with it or thinks poorly of me because of it, please feel free to contact me privately so I can tell you where to stick it.
  25. Negative. I'm an engineering test technician for Honeywell Aerospace. I receive computer boards for aerospace vehicles, (rockets and satellites) and test them for functionality in a variety of environments. Then we combine the boards into a complete unit and do all the testing again. End users are NASA, Northrup Grummon and Lockheed and others.
