This looks like a fun one . I’ll be watching.

That’s one sweet build! I think you made a good choice going to the white top. Your attention to detail and patience has resulted in a very impressive and clean build. Well done. I look forward to following more of your builds.

It’s a toss up between Woodstock (my very first concert), and Jimi Hendrix, The Steve Miller Band, Cactus, and The Grateful Dead at Temple Stadium.

Thanks to all for your kind comments! I enjoyed building this kit. It isn't perfect but I'm reasonably well satisfied with the result. I am slowly developing my model building skills and getting a bit closer to having a final result resemble something close to how I imagined the model. The wealth of knowledge available in these forums has been very helpful. I'm presently working on an AMT 1951 Chevrolet which is, for me, a study in frustration and considerable contrast to the well defined assembly of the Tamiya Mercedes. How some people are able to produce such beautiful models from the challenge of the ill fitting bits of the AMT kit is still somewhat astonishing to me.......but a subject for a different thread. Thanks again to all the contributors on this site.

I have had good results stripping Tamiya acrylics using denatured alcohol purchased at Lowes or Home Depot. For reasons I am unable find an answer to it is no longer available at either store......and I'm not in California where the sale of denatured alcohol is banned. Denatured alcohol is ethanol with a toxic substance added that makes it unfit for human consumption. I found the denatured alcohol to be more effective than the isopropyl alcohol that is commonly sold as "rubbing alcohol" which was effectively unavailable when the COVID pandemic began.

A terrific trio. Yes please, more!?

Very nice! I keep resisting buying this kit but my resistance is crumbling after seeing your terrific build.

Despite the windshield and decal issues you have produced a most impressive scale model! The engine detailing is a mind blower. Wow!

A few photos of the Tamiya Mercedes SLR McLaren that I have finally completed. The paint is Tamiya Champagne, the interior is Tamiya white and semigloss black. I struggled with getting the hood to have a snug fit and I completely failed at hinging the doors. Looking at the photos I see I should do some dust control when I photograph models.

Outstanding work!

I have used Tamiya TS-13 clear over Createx Wicked colors on test spoons and got a very nice result. I used one light coat followed by two moderately wet coats. The clear wet sanded to a nice clear and shiny finish.

I'm looking for suggestions for straining paint prior to using the paint in an airbrush. In particular I'm working with Createx paints. I've been practicing on spoons and have had some problems with bits of debris and clumps of paint clogging the airbrush. I really like the look of their pearl paints. I've noticed that paint strainers have different size mesh and I don't have any idea what an appropriate mesh size might be for straining the Createx paint and in particular the pearl paints. Oh yeah, shooting the paint through a Paasche H airbrush. Thanks, Andrew

I'm looking forward to following your progress on this. I've never done a 1/12 scale but received the Tamiya Porsche 934 in 1/12 scale for Christmas. While I would like to get right at it I've promised myself I'll finish up a number of pending projects first. While I realize your kit is much different from my own it will be interesting to see how you handle the details of large scale. -
I do enjoy your WIP's and learn something with the choices you make. This one is looking good as you persevere through the challenges. Where did you get the seats? I'm planning a '29 roadster built as a AA/A and need a minimalist bucket seat something like you've got in this project. Thanks, Andrew

Now you've knocked out the models in waiting I'll certainly be interested to see what your new projects look like!

Extraordinary work.....and with one hand out of commission for 3 months.....blows my mind!

Great looking work! What kit is the open wheel race car?

I have been very slowly working on a build of this same kit. Presently multitasking about 4 builds simultaneously but not making any real progress on any of them as I recover from a foot surgery. It's kind of awkward at the modeling bench on crutches so I'm not getting much done. I've adapted six two barrel carbs that I took from one of my '29 roadster kits for the intake (oh, forgot that one, there are actually 5 builds underway). I am going for a custom look and have spent a lot of time with figuring out how to lower the front suspension. I've not attempted this sort of thing before so it has been an interesting challenge. Love the wheels on yours and and the way you've adapted them. I'm especially impressed with the plug wiring! I've been looking at mine and wondering if I dared try to drill the holes to route the plug wires as you have done which corresponds to what I've found in online photos. Nothing I can say about the paint that hasn't already been said : spectacular in black! Good to know on the exhaust clearance issue. I'm made note to do a bit more pre-assembly checking and try to correct that before I paint. I'll be following this build and look forward to seeing the finished product!

I’ve always had a weird affection for the less powerful gasser class running inline 6’s and such. You could put a multi carb Chevrolet 6 cylinder in her…….but I have a feeling that isn’t likely?. Regardless of your approach I will enjoy watching this one.

Engine setback for the NHRA gasser class was 10% of the wheelbase with the setback measurement being from the front axle line to the center of the engine’s forward most spark plug hole.

Alan - Thank you for the detailed help on how I might implement the bobbed fenders. I am still on the fence as to how closely I may try to replicate the car in the photo. Most of my builds are pretty much OOB as I try to develop some skill with assembly and consistency in painting technique. Having said that I am going to push my limits on this build in an effort to build something representative of what was my favorite period in drag racing. Further thanks to all that have contributed to this thread. I just can’t say enough about how impressed I am with the quality and quantity of information and the generosity of spirit with which it is provided. -
What a sweet looking ride! Beautifully executed. The embossing powder carpeting is very effective.
