66 Chevy C-10
Jonathan replied to Just Jim's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Very nice -
I'll start a separate WIP for this one, eventually. I had started a thread on the Ayer's board, but it had been a long time since I updated that. I really need to get back to this build - we've been working on the house lately and just life stuff, but maybe this will motivate me since we're talking vintage racers. I'm a slow builder sometimes. I'm hoping to replicate Fireball Roberts' 1957 Chevy that won the 1958 Darlington race. My dad was there as a boy and he talks about what it was like back then. AMT "Proshop" kit, Tamiya paints.

I always liked the Hardee's schemes I appreciate the compliment - I can't take credit for making it a great website at all, it is very basic Didn't know about the history with Ayer's - I tended to visit in spurts. Hate to see any website of valuable historical "how to's" and such go away

A little back to the discussion about the Ayer's site, and it applies to all of the sites that we frequent, it costs money and time to run and manage a site. Domain name registration, hosting, storage, maintenance, etc. all requires some time and money. And it's not once-and-done, really. I've managed a site for a local church for years as a volunteer. It takes a little time each week to do the routine stuff - calendar updates, links for the upcoming services, etc. But, there is also the constant upgrade and maintenance cycle, and the continual need to make sure the site is secure. And, oh if you make a change to the appearance of the site; then you have to educate the (few) users who my complain that "it's not like it was!". It's kind of a hassle, really; but I do it because it helps the church and I find some satisfaction in knowing that I've contributed. Plus, I do like most of the people there. That said, it does take time that I could be using to do something else. I can only imagine the headache of running a site where people are allowed to interact with each other - that requires constant monitoring, and there is a lot of helping people actually use the site ("Why won't my image post?", "I don't like the multifactor authentication", etc. sort of things). So yeah, I hate it, but I can see where a small site dedicated to a portion of a hobby might just throw in the towel and hand it off to facebook.

I'll certainly miss the Nascar forum. I'm not a prolific builder by any means, but I appreciate the assistance I've gotten there, and I really love seeing the builds there. That reminds me, I have a Fireball Roberts '57 Chevy to finish ...

Bronco II Kit - does such a thing exist?

Seems to be a missed opportunity -

AMT 1957 Chevrolet Cameo
Jonathan replied to Jonathan's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Thanks for the tip about the glass. Hopefully the next paint job is better. If I don't have to do some paint correction, or even a complete repaint, I don't always feel like I've accomplished anything -

So very cool! Especially like the rotting wooden bed floor. Still looks like a restorable candidate -

So I didn't want to get bogged down .... ? I actually have a couple of these '57 Cameos in my stash. Being pretty unhappy with the overly thick paint, I decided to start over. I pulled a body out of another box, cleaned it up, and have primed it and am ready to go. In the meantime, I'm trying to strip the paint from the original body and will probably finish it in some color other than white. So, here's body #2, which will be dropped onto frame #1. Hopefully. -

Thanks for sharing the trick about preventing ghosting. Looks like you're off to a good start. -
OH wow, that is the coolest thing I have seen today. Beautiful work.

55 Cameo

Haha, I just went back and saw your reply to my earlier thread about Bombay Ivory. You really did a great job with what I think is a somewhat finicky kit. -

Wow! That looks really good! I'm impressed for sure. What did you use for the paint? -

Thanks for that - it does seem straightforward to fix. Oh, that looks nice! Really appreciate the visual. -

Well, on the positive side, I'm actually pretty happy with the color. But, there are a lot of thin spots, and I really, really botched my masking job this time! I can probably polish off the red over-spray, but the over all inconsistency in the paint thickness is apparent in the white. I'm thinking I may strip this one. -
History of Revell's Squarebody Pickup kits
Jonathan replied to kalbert's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
I'll probably pick up one copy - I'm a sucker I guess. So, does "New Parts!" mean, "we made new parts" or does it mean, "we found some parts of the mold and reinstated those."? -

Not much of an update, but I did polish out the paint today. Burned though the spears on the hood a little bit, but I think (hope) I can salvage that. Maybe I can finish the red trim tomorrow -

Yes, Sir! I caught that - thankfully. -

I hope so - we'll see how it looks after I polish it. I agree! Thank you. Did you do anything regarding the void under the cab? Or just leave it as is? (I'm probably going to leave it for the sake of not getting bogged down) -
Little background - my long-suffering wife gave me this kit ages ago because she liked the white on red. But, at the time, I was hesitant to start the kit, because my success with white finishes has been less than stellar So, trying to decide the best hobby paint for "Chevrolet Bombay Ivory", I primed the model with Tamiya white primer. Following some discussion in the Model Building Questions and Answers section, I shot a few coats of Tamiya Racing White TS-7 over it and here we are. Guess I'll finish it, because of course I should start another project! Thanks to everyone who provided some insight into possible solutions to "what color is it really?"
