“Styrene” Not what it used to be.
bobthehobbyguy replied to Brutalform's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Can't speak on the new kits because in the last 10 years I've bought very few kits. However changing plastic composition is nothing new. I remember that amt went through a phase where the plastic was rubbery. I remember times where Revell had plastics that were brittle becuase of the dyes. As said we need to vote with our wallet when we find something unacceptable. -
Nicely done. Could have been Studabakers answer to the Corvette and Tbird.

Getting a Hobby Lobby!!!!!!
bobthehobbyguy replied to SCRWDRVR's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yeah I've heard a hobby lobby is coming to Chico about 40 min drive. Going in where Toys r us was. Last time I was in Chico they are in process of remodeling. Before that the closest one was about 1.5 hours. -
Flocking questions
bobthehobbyguy replied to iamsuperdan's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Embossing powder is probably the best wway to go. Another way for flocking would be to use the static electricity process used by the train guys for doing grass. One of the my fellow club members did a demo. Might be one way to do it. -
Bantam Fuel Altered - New pics 1-7
bobthehobbyguy replied to Codi's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Great idea for using a jig to get the chassis sides to match. Looking forward to seeing the final pictures of the bantam. Am interested to see what you do with the Maverick pro stock. I know it will be nice. -
Nailhead powered VW cabrio Beach Buggy
bobthehobbyguy replied to Claude Thibodeau's topic in Model Cars
Wow a different concept for a VW. Its interesting the the wheelbase of the willys and vw are so close. Another great model. -
Tom I agree with your comments. However I think that trying to revive the magazine at this point is even more difficult. The loss of golden bell( not only loss of printer but subscription monies also and compounded by the the loss of Harry). Both serious setbacks. in addition 2 issues in 2017, 1 in 2018, and last printed issue in February 2018 just make things more difficult. I commend Gregg on his stick to it attitude but don't have any good ideas for how to solve the problem. The problem with going digital only is that the hobby shop sales would be lost so no revenue would be generated from those sales. Digital only would only help fulfilled the promised issues to subscribers but do nothing for the money situation but do nothing to get the print version b back on track.

AMT Li'ler Mixer

Nice start looking forward to seeing more. -
Thanks Dave for the status. I'm not surprised about the issues. Worked on web developement and it was enoigh of a challenge just dealing with the browsers. Now they are dealing with browers, mobile , and tablets. Total nightmare trying to get that all to play nice. Typical that the forum vendor and theme vendor point fingers at each other. Good luck.

Great job. The battle damage is great. Must have been a busy week of crime fighting. Depending on the diorama you have planned you could have some joker inspired graffiti maybe a joker face.

Nice weathering job. Actually think it is more realistic than a shiny version. Besides it would be more than likely there would be a second batmobile so that maintenxce and upkeep could be done. Looking forward to more.

Modeling for fun.....again!
bobthehobbyguy replied to GaryR's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
On the original topic a hobby is done for enjoyment or relaxation. That is something that is cifferent for everyone. Modeling is an art and with repetition one gets better with time. This forum is for the enjoyment and sharing of knowledge. It always helps when somebody indicates when they post a model if they indicate whether they are looking for all feedback whether it be positive or negative. Unfortunately therr are some that lack tact when communicating to others. On the same there are some that do not tack constructive criticism well even with tact. However there are times when someone is passing on bad information that needs to be corrected. I'd rather take the heat of correcting someone than have someone pass on misinformation such as painting automotive paint on bare plastice than have someone ruin a kit. In the end there are numerous ways to enjoy the hobby and none of them are wrong. -
Lacquer over enamel - possibility?
bobthehobbyguy replied to Monty's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I also think it is very chancy thing. If it doesn't mess up immediately there is a risk of cracking over time. Plus you are mixing three brands of paint tamiya, testors, and the enamel. Definitely a recipe for disaster. -
No I haven't stripped paint on many projects. I had one project I did and the plastic got very brittle. Think the better course is to find a way to use an issue to your advantage as you are doing. Very plausible that the batmobile would have battle scars from its encounters with criminals.

bobthehobbyguy replied to Toriano's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Very nice work on the chassis. This is coming along nicely. -
Sorry to hear you've had some paint issues. Like your plan for making the fish eyes work as bullet holes. I've never been a fan of stripping paint particullarly when so much body work is involved. Looking forward to seeing more.

On the subject of paying for the forum. First it is extremely difficult to charge for something that has been free. It really would have to be a value added feature such as digital access to all previous issues. Also how do you deal with those who are creating the content that gets people on the site. You are going to lose those who generate the meaningful content if they have to pay for the privilege of contributing to the site. As far as the digital version of the magazine Gregg is producing a digital version for those who want it. However that isn't something that everyone wants or has the means to access. Also many who have subscribed are expecting a paper copy. As Gregg has stated subscription monies that were collected by Golden Bell and he never received those payments. Don't really know the solution to the problem for getting the magazine back on track. I thought the lifetime subscriptions were the best shot at getting the magazine on track. Hope Gregg can make it happen because quite frankly Scale Auto has really become a disappointment. And if MCM can't be revived we could very well end up with no magazine supporting the model car community. Finally I agree with the lack of civility in all aspects of life today. I think that part of the issue is that communicating online some people say things they would never say face to face. That and the world in general seems to be getting more hostile every day.

Bantam Fuel Altered - New pics 1-7
bobthehobbyguy replied to Codi's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
The picture above with nothing to give away the size leads one to believe that that is a full size chassis. It is mind numbing to think this is a model. Even more breath taking is its 25th scale. The soldering is so precise. Normally we see huge blobs of solder on the joints. Codi would really like to see how you achieve such clean solder work? This is a stunning masterpiece in the world of precision miniatures.
