Little Jeep Trailer
Tom Geiger posted a topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
This one went quickly so there is no build thread. It was a side project while building my St John’s Jeep... Digging in my junk box during pauses in my Jeep project, and just playing with odd parts has given me another trailer. Tail lights are short lengths of Evergreen tube with scrap clear lenses I colored red (in the inside) with a Sharpie. Bumper was from the kit but was a gluey mess. I went with that and added rust colors to the glue texture. Plate is two digits off from my car trailer. Since Acme plate generator doesn’t have trailer plates, this started as a plate for sale on eBay, photo resized. Then I just moved a digit on the photo to get a different plate. The wheels came from parts bin, I only had two, perfect for this project. I think they were early 60s Revell Mopar since they weren’t that detailed, but look like cheap trailer wheels. Wood is just that.. wood! Sticks from my backyard cut to short lengths. I did want a bright color, so I used Tamiya bright green, enough left in can from my Chevette build for this but not a full model so I went with it. Decals are from Dodge D50 pickup. On the hook behind my Jeepster. And I’ll share the build details.. Since the St John’s Jeep only used the front end of this old Jeep junker body, I had the back end to play with. At first I dismissed it, thinking it was too short, but the voices kept taunting me! Chassis is simple, as a home built trailer would be just that. It’s the rear portion from a Jeep chassis I had already hacked up for the transmission mount that’s under my Jeepster. Front pieces are just Evergreen rod bits from my scrap box. I believe the springs are from 1950 Ford pickup. Axle is simply a length of Evergreen rod. And here’s a mock-up... front panel is Evergreen sheet scrap from the Jeep project. Spare tire is there not only because we need one, but also to visually fill up space.. and because the trailer was rear heavy! Now left to its own, it settled on the tongue. That’s the tire carrier from the Jeep kit. Tailgate was in my junk box but may have come from a 1:20 scale Jeep as it was too large. I liked that it said Jeep on it, which the Daisy’s Jeep kit doesn’t. I cut and sanded it to size and hinged it with a bit of Evergreen rod and two little brass eyelets made for ship modelers. This whole thing pretty much came from my junk bins. Waste not, want not! -

72 Chevy Wedge Racer's Wedge release announced.
Tom Geiger replied to GMP440's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
Both the Racers Wedge and camper are typical hokey MPC kits from that era. Neither are 100% accurate as they were marketed to kids and what did we know! The camper interior is a bit out of scale when I put my 1:25 scale ruler against the components, which ruled them out for use on my other camper projects where I scratch built everything instead. -
These Bernie memes are funny! Non-political and harmless fun that all sides are laughing together. Just what we needed about now! On line outside NNL East!

The sad fact is that this has hurt the hobby overall. When Avenel Hobbies in New Jersey went out of business after 30 years, the owner told me it was a direct result of the Hobby Lobby that had opened a mile or two up the road. He said his kit sales dried up, and customers would show up with the HL coupon and demand he matched it. He said he couldn’t, their price was less than he paid his distributor for the kits! And we all did this to save a few bucks. Destroyed the long term for a quick immediate buck!

amt 1202 1/25 AMT 1963 Chevy II Nova Station Wagon - Craftsman Plus
Tom Geiger replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I hope so! Back when Polar Lights was active they pioneered an easy build but detailed snap kit concept.. look at their Volkswagen Herbie kit.. it came with multi color plastic parts, and went together easy in a short time and gave the casual builder a pleasant experience and a fair model for their shelf! I gave one to my 13 year old nephew, he put it together and was quite pleased. Perfect for kids, beginning modelers and older people who are losing their dexterity. The same model was designed that experienced modelers could paint and detail it into a nice model, or use it as a start point for a full blown project. Aside from the Beetle, there was a 1965ish GTO and Dodge, as well as the last modern GTO in this concept. Overall a brilliant concept! And guess what? Tom Lowe is still in charge.. maybe we’ll see more kits like this.- 599 replies

Interesting.. no doubt the 40% off coupon was designed that you’d buy a cart full of craft stuff and get the discount off one item. And no doubt people are abusing it, buying just one item at the discount. I remember one guy posting with glee that he got four models at the discount by putting his wife and two kids on the line with him as individual customers / single transactions. Although perfectly legal and within their terms, it goes against their intent and is costing them money. Am I guilty? Oh yea! I can drive through their lot on my way to other stores. I stop in to see if they got any new models, or anything on clearance. If not I’ll buy one thing at the discount so it’s not a wasted trip... a can of Testors paint, glue, pack of brushes etc.

I'd rather fiddle with junk from the bottom of my model car scrap box and build odd stuff! Sad fact - Lego sold more of that kit than Round 2 will Nova Wagons! ? -

It’s an interesting thing and I don’t know the answer.. A few years ago the host of the NNL East website made a play for securing the site. They said that soon all browsers would reject non-secure sites so we upgraded. To illustrate the point Google Chrome started blocking my access to my own websites! So we did the big upgrade. The cost is more than we pay for hosting AND domains! And in the end? I haven’t been blocked from accessing any website from any browser since then!
