"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!
Tom Geiger replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Okay, count me in with the Gullwing Studebaker! This is ancient, even the photos and my last attempt to resurrect it are from 2006. You can figure the kits involved were the 1953 Studebaker and Mercedes Gullwing. This was my first attempt at major work and I fell short in several areas I can fix today.. so it’s time! Here’s what it looks like now. I had stripped the bad paint job off. The bodywork sucked, the doors don’t exactly fit, nor had I figured out how to hinge them. I’m not looking for perfection, just to let it out of the box! -
Hey Tim- a great story and it looks like you had fun! I was too young to be a modeler in the 1962-3 era, but I did get the later releases of the Double Dragster and the Tony Nancy dragster set the same evening as an adult and I stayed up all night just playing with all the pieces and options! I can see how exciting it was for kids back then!

St John Jeep
Tom Geiger replied to Tom Geiger's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
That would be great! I may go snoop around Google Maps some more! It would be an incredible score! Some more work today. I have the entire box worked out In cardboard and 1:1 dimensions. I prefer to work in real world dimensions from my years designing and building office space. I’ll go through this bit of progress in detail, hoping folks will find it useful. If not I’ll go away! You already saw my cab side panels so here’s the back panel. The main pieces are all .040” Evergreen sheet, their item 9040. There are two 6” x 12” sheets to a pack. Cost about $3.50 so not all that expensive, but still I work my patterns in cardboard before committing to plastic. I measured the new fabricated body width as 68” across. So in the above photo you see the panel was cut to 68 scale inches. I used my nifty centering ruler to mark off the center point. We will be working all of our dimensions off the center. Note that I had determined the height of this panel needed to be 30” as it is parallel to the windshield’s bottom glass edge. I measured the Jeep’s width at 58”, giving the rear box 5” wider on each side. Here we have measured that off. The cab side panels I cut off were a bit thicker than the .040” plastic so I added a bottom edge to them. Once that dried, I was able to center the back panel right in place per the measurements I drew on it. The metal bench seat was one of the things I found interesting on the truck! That was easy, since it fit between pieces. I just measured off what I needed and glued it in place. Next step will be making the rear bed box. I have the pieces all templated in cardboard, and I was waiting for that angle to be defined at the front of it. The parts may not be perfect, but I’m having fun! -
Huge losses to the modeling community
Tom Geiger replied to bobthehobbyguy's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I knew both Greg and Steve, great guys gone too soon. Our NNL East / Philadelphia NNL team lost three members this year as well. We lost Dave Cura and Ken Walkley, who both were part of the museum’s Scan The Past program. And we lost Tommy Kortman, lead guy for the Philly event. Maryland Area Modelers Association, home of the MidAtlantic NNL lost Gary Sutherland this year too. It’s been a sad year all around! -
Okay... these are on you guys! There was a mention of this Jag in a thread, which I think is an absolutely gorgeous car. So I went looking for one. And once you are buying something you need to justify the postage by buying more! I love these two! We will never see kits but we can get them in 1/24 scale. All three are very nicely executed, Fiat by Welly, Jeep is Maisto and Jag is Burago. $18 apiece including shipping. With diecast this nice for cheap, I can’t blame people for not building models anymore!

A funny story.. when I was moved from NJ to PA for a job, the company sent a realtor in to evaluate my house.. came from a high end realty company. In her report she referred to my model room as “the room full of junk and debris “!

I found the same issue! I went to Home Depot, and Lowe’s before getting a filter at Walmart. It seemed they only had the more expensive ones in stock, I just attributed it to this being heating season. Also I found out professionally that one of the major filter factories was put out of commission by hurricane in 2000. So that may be part of the shortage. Now that I’ve got a new $10 filter in my Pace I will continue to look around for a deal, then stock up! Added note- just looked on eBay and you can buy a 6 or 12 pack for approx $4-5 a filter delivered. Best deal was a dozen for $50.30 which is $4.19 each.

Older photo of my workbench, not much has changed, except it’s messier! Bench is actually a hollow core door wrapped in brown paper, sitting on top of two old nightstands. The actual work area is an old board, partly covered with thick glass. The board is important to protect the bench, as I can drill into it and spill things on it. I also have a few holes drilled in it to hold pieces for sanding and such. The glass was originally the lens on a full size Xerox copier. Perfectly flat for precision work, and I clean it with a razor blade occasionally.

Can you hone them out to fit your wheels? I just went through same thing with some Suburbanite snow tires. I patiently worked tiny bits out of the core with an exacto knife, checking fit often, until they worked!

Wow! Very convincing dio piece!

Poor Camaro! Yes, diecasts are made from Zymac and different blends of it have started to degrade over time. Not restricted to cheap cars, it’s been seen on the expensive Franklin and Danbury Mint cars. I just pulled a Brookfield Jeep out of ten year storage and I can see minor bubbling on some of the panels.

BMF, stepping up my game
Tom Geiger replied to SCRWDRVR's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It looks good! Especially for a first time. I’m a BMF perfectionist so I’d tell ya if there was anything needing fixing! -

St John Jeep
Tom Geiger replied to Tom Geiger's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Thanks Stef! I build some odd things and a lot of people don’t get me! I found it crazy interesting that I found that second photo! St John is a tiny little island with a small downtown, if you could even call it that! I went to Google Street View and walked around a bit looking for it. I didn’t find it on a street! Since St John is all hilly and rugged, most vehicles there are Jeeps. Right near the ferry landing there are a bunch of Jeep rental shops.. I was thinking of emailing a few to ask about this Jeep. Maybe I’ll find an interested local! -
What a crazy grouping! I can see you never get bored! I like the Chevelle and Fiat!
