Hello from Berlin / Germany
Tom Geiger replied to RockinRoller's topic in Welcome! Introduce Yourself
Welcome Oliver! I’m an American but grew up in Pirmasens. I miss it. -
I was at Toledo and started going through those boxes of bodies, someone got my attention and we had a conversation. Then I forgot all about it and walked off! There was so much there that I’m still seeing stuff I missed that I’m now seeing in all the photos people are posting.

Is "Brite Touch" primer any good?
Tom Geiger replied to JollySipper's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Tamiya primer is very nice but I tend to use Duplicolor 1699 primer / sealer on most of my work. If I had a project that was using all Tamiya paints, I'd use their primer. I have a can or two of it here. -
With a color printer and the Internet full of photos for the taking, it's pretty easy to print your own gauges. This one is the 1950 Ford pickup, the image was an instrument cluster for sale on eBay. I cropped it out in Irfanview and then resized it in Word until I got what I needed. I've used this in a few builds so far. Dodge D50 pickup. Above is a photo from the original brochure. It had the steering wheel in the way, so I cleaned it and these can be printed on paper and white glued in place instead of creating decals.

Very nice build! Subtle but effective! It just works as a car most of us would love to own!

2020 Round2 Car Kit News & Announcements
Tom Geiger replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Back when Retrohobby did the set of four in 2005, Model King had been offered the opportunity and passed because the four bikes were part of one tool. He saw it as you do, that there would be a disproportionate demand for the different bikes, causing problems if they were to be sold separate. That's why Retrohobby released them as a set. I guess Round 2 is blocking off a lot of runners in the tool just to get the Roth bike! -
The mother load...........

I fear that the hobby ghouls will descend upon this poor woman and offer her $100 to clean out her attic! ☹️ -

I dunno and the owner doesn't either. Sad end to someone's collection! -

I believe both Danbury and Franklin Mint worked with the same factory / provider in China. A few other brands did so too. That factory closed down, bankruptcy or taken over by the government-- take your pick. It seems this happened a few years ago, around the time when diecast cars were losing their luster. So neither Franklin or Danbury chose to start over, and ended their series. I'm surprised that the Chinese haven't used that tooling to send us cheap repops by now!

My attorney and I agreed that the inspector's report was indeed written to deny any responsibility on his part and was very poor. I have another inspection report from the first buyer that is more realistic. There is really nothing wrong with the house so they nitpicked that a window wouldn't latch and a shower head was leaking. Stuff like that! It's interesting that the reports appear to be written about different properties. Neither of them addressed the same issues! The buyer just wanted out and the inspection complaints were just a smoke screen to wiggle out. Spoke with my attorney yesterday, the only remedy would be to sue for performance, which means a costly court appearance and maybe tying ourselves up for months. We have sold this house three times! Buyer one couldn't come up with the down payment. Yes, he signed the contract which states that buyer represents he has funds to close. Again, a costly court appearance for any relief. Buyer two flaked out during attorney review. Sale was not contingent on any sale of his existing house, but he claimed the deal fell through on his house and didn't have funds to complete the deal. So end analysis is that if you are in a real estate deal in New Jersey, you can just walk away at any whim and the other party would need to take on a costly lawsuit. Argh!

Note that it's not the paint deteriorating, but the metal underneath. There was something wrong with the zymac (is that the word) metal castings that they deterioriate and in worst case crumble. The mints stopped doing diecast because the factory they had all contracted with had gone under. And no doubt the market was down to the point it wasn't worth starting over with a new manufacturer. I'm surprised that cheap knock offs using the original mint tools aren't popping up. The market really tanked with the larger scale stuff. I'm not sure if it was just the cycle of collectibles, the realization of people that these weren't an "investment", or people just plain running out of room to display them. I've told the story about the guy who emailed me a long list of 1/18 scale diecast cars from the estate of his father. He thought they were worth a sizable sum, I advised him otherwise. After a month or so he approached me to buy the lot for $5 a car. I declined.

VW bug 1/24 or 1/25 fenderless ?
Tom Geiger replied to cobraman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Here's a couple of photos I took many years ago just for this same reason. and here's something I was playing with a bunch o' years ago... -
Nice resto on one of my favorite old kits! Take your completed chassis and see how many different bodies, both 1/24 and 1/25 will slide right on top of it! You'll get hooked!

Nice restoration! Just be careful that the hearing aid batteries stay intact and don't leak over time. That Jada tow truck is a decent copy of the Danbury unit. There were a lot of those made and still available around the secondary market. The later ones came with "Donk" style wheels and tires (ugh!) That truck is rich with parts for models! I've seen the entire wrecker bed installed on models, most memorable is a 1958 Dodge resin kit that was done very well! And the wheels / tires are excellent. In fact Ma's Resin copied them. And the cab gives all the lights, mirrors etc.... all the parts someone stole off yours!

Sale is falling through on my New Jersey house. We received the worlds worst homeowner inspection. Keep in mind that I completely gutted and rebuilt this house nine years ago! The inspection report is written so poorly that you cannot differentiate between their boiler plate and actual concerns. And every point in the report is designed to take no responsibility or liability on the part of the inspector. In every instance they recommend a second opinion by a licensed HVAC company, Electrician, plumber etc. All told that would result in another 5 inspections. Inspection was written like "water heater and central a/c systems are nine years old and will fail at ten years. Have homeowner replace systems prior to closing." Um no! The two a/c systems in my own house are over 20 years old and in excellent operating condition! The inspection report is so poor, that as a qualified individual, I may send it in to the state licensing board. After we get past this whole debacle! And of course this mess has cost us a month.

It's on the long list of things we'd like to do. When we were asked to put on a historical display of NNL East at the NNL Nationals final event, that's when I realized how little we have from the first few years. I attended NNL East 3 as a spectator and was involved with the show from 4 onward, and that's where we have the memorabilia!

Wow! The work on this chassis is incredible. Here's to showing the mere kit assemblers what goes into creating a real model!

Very nice project! I love light commercial vehicles. Here's a pair of old Valiant taxis from the Netherlands.

I went to Hobby Lobby yesterday and saw that the Revell Porsche tractor was back in stock, so I grabbed one. Used my magic coupon and it was less than $14. Yes, I had one but I wanted a second one to use for parts on projects...
