  1. Just got back from an excellent weekend at the NNL meet in Waukesha, WI and picked up a few goodies at the swap meet there: Original issue unpainted '61 Ranchero body with molded-in hood and curbside chassis, plus the front roll pan and taillight bezels are intact - good deal for two bucks; '66 T-bird and '59 Mercury bumper/grilles (I'm combining two Merc grilles to make a '59 Meteor grille); 'AMT '55 Chevy hood (to take a Nomad from parts-car to project), a set of AMT 13" compact car wheels (the ones with the slots molded open; not sure which kit had them); and finally a Jimmy Flintstone Ford Econoline van kit. This will be built as the one from the TV movie Smash-Up on Interstate 5.
  2. Here's the front fender emblem I worked up for Steven; save, reduce and print:
  3. I got distracted by something shiny! Modified bumpers returned from Chrome-Tech. Left top to bottom: '60 Chrysler modified with the license plate indentation and seams added, '63 Falcon f & r, '61 Falcon rear, '60 Falcon front (modified - I separated the grille and used a second broken grille to fill the gap), and '61 T-bird promo f & r. Right: '60 Chrysler rear minus bumper guards, '58 Ford rear, and original '58 Edsel with bumper guards removed (the new kit's bumpers are too thin to remove the guards).
  4. Just for comparison, here are the instructions from the T285 "Shifty Seven" issue, when it last had all the custom parts intact. Note in the photo Brett posted above, the odd-shaped part in the upper left corner is the back half of the TV set. http://public.fotki.com/drasticplasticsmcc/mkiba-build-under-c/amt-instructions/automotive-cars--pi/ford/1951-1960/amt-57-ford-bonnevi/?view=roll#5
  5. Picked up an open but complete AMT Baldwin Motion Camaro at a thrift store for $3.99; hmm - maybe I could do some kitbashing and build a Baldwin Motion '70 Impala?
  6. Last year I had a DVD set take a four-day vacation in Puerto Rico on its way from CA to IL. I've had a few packages get here from China quicker.
  7. Here's one for the lounge crowd: She don't like flyin', but I'm glad I'm alive I crave affection, baby, but not when I drive! (Title and artist on this one.) Hint: Singer passed away recently. Video of the song has a '66 Imperial convertible.
  8. My 20-year-old nephew just got his first car the other day, a used VW Golf with a stick, and taught himself to drive it already. Me, well... took driver's ed in a '76 Datsun B210 stick and drove it once on the Dan Ryan Expressway; I've managed to block out most of that memory. Sadly, I'm just not good enough at it to be doing it regularly; so I'll stay with the automatic. On the other hand, it's kept me out of trouble on two occasions: once when I almost bought a rather sketchy Fiat X1-9, and the other when a salesman tried to put me in a new Yugo. So it evens out.
  9. Thanks Brett! Sure enough, an unchromed chrome tree, 2/3 of the trophy and 1/2 of the TV set. Plus a bit more flash than I expected.
  10. Check out this thread I posted a while back - might be what you need: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/117424-easy-reflectors-for-round-headlights/#comment-1700793
  11. Thanks dodgefever! Looks like AMT trimmed the edges, rockers and emblems in silver. Still a good idea for a mild custom; could also be good patterns for making the trim from Evergreen strip - or even photoetching?
  12. One of those smack-your-forehead "Why didn't I think of that" ideas!
  13. Glad I could help a little bit! Here's a thought: Have a truck pulling in carrying the new-style Zephyr sign while a 1/25 scale worker lights up a torch to cut down the weathered one...
  14. In Harry's honor: My first scratchbuilt distributor bracket setup. He made me want to push myself to do it. R.I.P,. Harry, and thanks for the incentive to do better.
  15. Crossing another off the wish list: Two (OK, 1 2/3) Aurora Alfa Romeo 2000 Spiders. These have been tough to find, and although they're 1/32 scale , it's the only game in town for the type except for the Atlas Leo 1/24 diecast. Now to find a cheap '61 Tempest sedan...
  16. Another magnificent job! Gives us all something to shoot for. Good luck with the move - how do you intend to pack up the finished models? I think he meant underhood wiring - and I second what he said.
  17. Might as well pass on one failed experiment: I used some Micro Foil Cement to paste down the embossing powder, then shot a coat of Tamiya semi-gloss black over it. After it dried looked very good; had a nice nubbly texture. A day or two later, the surface had split up and shrunk, leaving big cracks all over it. I'm guessing the lacquer reacted with the adhesive somehow.
  18. Excellent work on the wheels and tires; the originals never looked quite right. The black wash really makes the details pop. If you cut out the inner fender panels, did you save them? I could use the shock towers for the Moebius Comet...
  19. Brett, could you please open up the Ford and show us some photos of the parts trees?
  20. Jo-Han's a dead issue. Chrysler owns the copyright to all the AMC brands; the model companies (or really Moebius - AMT is 99% reissues and Revellogram wouldn't bother with anything vintage they couldn't sell as a lowrider) would be dealing with them directly.
  21. Alan, did you check the "Tips, Tricks and Tutorials" section of the board?
  22. Guess that's the last time the stock version was released. Wonder if the stock parts are still on blocked-off runners, like with some old AMT molds?
  23. How long will it be before we have home workshop 3D scanners that would scan an object and create a scaleable file for a 3D printer? Say you have a kit that only came in 1/32 scale (Lindberg Granada, for example) and you want to recreate it in 1/25. Possible someday?
