What you have sounds like Silver Leaf. The adhesive is usually called "size", pronounced like the body of water as in the 7 seas. Here's a video of a guy, more like an artist, using it on bike's gas tank. I've tried it on a model years ago with some success. The silver leaf seems to be almost brittle and breaks into pieces. The one I used was multi colored so it worked ok. I'll see if I have a picture.
