Yep. I would not want to disappoint anyone. The good thing about the Torino is that it has the correct 429 engine that came in the real 71 Mustangs and it should fit easily. You can get both models and drop a 351 into the Torino and still have a legit GT.
-
It is hit or miss with Testors depending on what model was used as the base kit. The Torino looks nice and at first glance the MPC based 71-73 Mustangs from Testors look okay but there are numerous flaws carried over from the plastic kit. My biggest complaints with them are they are supposed to represent a 71 or 72 but they have the 73 front bumper and the hood has vents and the engine is a Boss 429 which is incorrect. They are also usually not cheap but I have to admit the paint on them is pretty nice.

You hit the nail on the head. For now I'm content with these I built but i just love GT40's so I will get one of these.

Very nice paint oombination. I actually built one very similar about 40 years ago. Over the years the one I have built I've noticed a few things sometimes overlooked. The grille area is mostly body color. In other words, just the surrounding trim is chrome and of course the flat grille itself is black and zooming in it looks like you are spot on. You're right about the chrome - the kit has been reissued more times that I can count. I cannot remember for sure but I think the interior colors on Shelby's were pretty limited but the red looks better than your basic black. The toy like engine compartment bothers me the most on this kit but that's just how most kits were back then. Why spend extra money on tooling when you can use the same chassis for multiple kits. Real nice job on the side stripes and the door gaps. For the engine a Fram decal would look cool and there are better wheels in other kits but you detailed them nicely. I agree with the tire choce too. Good work.

Is 19.99 the price in Euros? If so, the prices on Ebay might be on the high side.

Repainting die cast car
vamach1 replied to JMeehan913's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I have not taken a M2 diecast apart before but if it is like the 1/64 ones you undo the screws on the bottom to get started. It gets tricky when it comes to how the windows, bumpers and mirror are attached. They would have to be removed unless you carefully tape them off so they do not get the blue overspray on them. I would also use tape for the stripes since the car is already black you can paint the blue and when it dries pull the tape off to reveal the black. Needless to say this will take some time but hopefully the end result will be worth it. I've seen a fair amount of diecasts repainted on this forum so it's very doable. Here's of example of a before and after of the exact same diecast model kit. The yellow one is the stock prepainted one and the white one I redid. You would never think they started out identical. -
Suitable kits for 'Ford vs. Ferrari' film
vamach1 replied to 89AKurt's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You can use the Fujumi/Revell GT40 MKII to build any one of the eight cars in the 66 Lemans lineup with decals from Indycals. You can also build Sebring and Daytona versions but that's where a little more creativity comes in such as relocating the fuel filler caps just to name one detail that is easily overlooked. Not all the 1966 MKII's were identical either so it's best to research each car. Most diecast manufacturers do not bother to account for subtle differences since they were probably based on the recreation cars versus the real ones. All I can tell you about the Ferrari's is they lost and they were red. ?- 13 replies

You're welcome. I spent quite a lot back in the day buying his decals. -
When Modeling Skills Transfer To Real Life
vamach1 replied to Tom Geiger's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I painted ornaments for my daughter two years when she played basketball in middle and high school. I'll have to dig them out this week. I repainted the uniforms the color of her teams and put her team name and number on them. She was really surprised. Here's the high school one for the Oakton Cougars. -
I think some of the Matchbox 1/43 cars were advertised. I'm pretty sure I got some for Christmas and my mother would have ordered them. The Boss 429 comes to mind.

Annual show with 800 tables of model kits, diecast and pretty much any toy you can think of for sale. If you are within a few hours drive it is worth the trip. It's at the Fairgrounds and I believe therre is a train show (separate admission) too. One of the model car clubs has a display in the lobby between the halls. This show is just once a year and I always come home with a bag full of goodies. I think the hours are 9-3 and it's $10 to get in but I'm not 100% sure - it's hard to find anything online about the show.
-
They also show 1/43 and 1/24 versions. Hopefully the 1/8 version is not just a blown up 1/24 one but has the level of detail on par with Exoto. I have a lot of 1/43 GT40's but not a lot of 1/24 ones in diecast. With the popularity of Ford vs. Ferrari your would think someone would take the WIX car molds and do the complete 66 Lemans lineup.

Repainting die cast car
vamach1 replied to JMeehan913's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
If you can post a picture of the model and the real car it would be helpful. First step would be to take part the model so you can paint just the body with primer and then the color coat. Use enamel or lacquer but do not mix the two. Let the paint dry a few days before putting everything back together. The stripes could be either tape, painted on or decals,. Finding the material may be a challenge unless you have a Hobby Lobby or craft store nearby. When you paint the body you will also want a stand of some sort so you can paint everything together. A coat hanger and masking tape works fine for a plastic kit but diecast is heavier so you may have to improvise with something else you can wedge in the underside of the body. Here's a picture of a diecast kit I started on but have not finished. Good luck and post any questions you have. There are many modelers here willing to help out. -
Very nice detailing. Is the 426 one big glob of plastic or decent looking? If is is toy-like, any possibility of an engine transplant?
-
For the MarkIV it's either the 50 year old MPC or IMC/Testors kits or the more expensive resin kits. The MKIV's were built 30 years ago and the J-car more recently.
-
Very nice on both counts. Those Gunze Cobra kits are okay but not worth $100+ when the HRM kit is so much better all around. I built the Gunze Cobra but like Bill G my HRM is still in the box. The race is on Bill.?

There are a few more obscure ones and many resin ones (Renaissance and Lemans Miniatures) that are curbside. I build the Thunder and CMA resin kits a while ago. I used to build a lot of 1/43 as there are so many variations it's nearly impossible to build each car from every race. There's some diecast and 1/87 stuff in these pictures but this only scratches the surface of the 1/24 and 1/25 build and unbuilt kits also in the collection. I am looking forward to the 1/12 MENG kit and I wish someone would make a reasonably priced and accurate MarkII and MarkIV plastic kit with an engine and maybe even opening doors.

Can you send me a PM with contact info. Thanks

Here's a few of the R&M of MD parts created by Larry Boothe. I'm not positive those are his GT wheels. The convertible GTA is a one off conversion - sorry no plans to have resin copies made.
-
I should have some unpainted ones of some of the parts used in the pictures above I can dig out and post pictures.
-
Here's an older build with R&M of MD GT emblems, side vents, hood and rear panel. I cannot remember if it is Norm's grille also.

Isn't that the truth.
