AMT 1966 Ford Mustang Hood?
Snake45 replied to STYRENE-SURFER's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I'd be willing to bet a fair chunk of change that the AMT '66 hardtop hood is a direct fit for their AWB body. -
Paint it or build it in its molded color

All white styrene is not created equal. If you're going to polish it, it needs to be as opaque as possible, which most modern white styrene isn't (some, though not all, '60s white styrene is). Only white styrene I've successfully polished so far was an AMT snapper '53 Corvette. It looks good. I currently have an older AMT '59 Vette on the bench I'm trying to pull the same trick on. I recently stripped an original annual AMT '67 Cyclone that's so dense and white and clean that I'd love to polish it, but there's a hole in the hood that will need to be filled. Unless I can come up with a virgin hood, I'll have to paint the thing. -
How high will it go?
Snake45 replied to Brutalform's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Gotta disagree with you here, old friend. If you put in an early big bid that exceeds someone else's "max price," you give them time to talk themselves into upping the price they're willing to pay. Have seen it happen many times. Also, putting in a big bid early can increase the price you pay even if you win. Let the thing sit there at as low a price as possible as long as possible. That'll keep down the bids of those trying to sneak in for a good deal. There is no advantage in showing your cards before you need to. -
Thanks, Scott!

Decide on your highest price, then deduct the seller's shipping cost. There's your bid price. DON'T put this bid in and walk away. Wait until the last possible minute to place your bid. If you show up at the last minute and it's already over your price, oh well, there will be another one coming up next week. -
Spotted this sad looking ’94 Vette promo at a local flea market and scored it for $9. It was absolutely filthy and the windshield frame was broken on the left side—right through the mirror, if you can believe it! (You’d think that would be the strongest place, but I guess not.) Disassembled it and cleaned it up, and the body turned out to be in pretty decent shape, and didn’t take much polishing at all to look great. The windshield was moderately scratched up on the inside (!) but the outside was nearly pristine—I can’t even begin to imagine how that happened. I liquid-cemented the windshield frame back together, then sanded and polished the join so smoothly that if I didn’t tell you it was there, you’d never see it. I rattlecanned the windshield frame and interior in semigloss black (a ’94 Vette black interior turns out to have virtually no highlights or details to worry about), did my standard detailing on wheels, tires, grille, side marker and taillights and so forth. It doesn’t look half bad for $9 and a few hours work. Sorry I didn’t bother to take a BEFORE pic, so just imagine it all blue, dirty, and with the windshield frame broken on the left side. Thanks for looking as as always, comments welcome.

Or get "accidentally" knocked over by clumsy Old People.

Very clean build! Well done and model on!

You don't knock it over. You FALL into it and make it look like the robot's fault. The older you are, the easier it is to get away with it. I have a feeling that most of us here could pull it off handily.

Just requires careful fitting. Shouldn't be an insurmountable problem. -

It went for $202.50, so we win! -
September display: Calendar musclecar is a dark (black, dark blue, dark green?) with white stripes ’70 Chevelle SS HT. I have a built Monogram ’70 Chevelle SS plastic model, but would rather not risk it in transport, so went with my Motor Max ’70 El Camino SS in red with black stripes figuring I’d probably never get another chance to use it. And they look the same in head-on view. So I matched make and year, but not exact model or color. Oh well. Calendar Camaro is a modified ’67, red with white Z/28 stripes and front spoiler. It’s captioned as a “Camaro 350” but if it were a real ’67 350 it would have to be an SS, which it’s not, and I doubt it’s a real ’67 Z/28 either. My diecast is my new Welly ’68 Z/28, red with white stripes. So I matched make, model, and color, but not year. Best I could do. Head-on view is kind of boring, so I’ll probably display them like this most of the time.

Tuesday morning pick-me-up: Rock's not dead...but it will be
Snake45 replied to iamsuperdan's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Well, all my favorite cars are now 50 or more years old. (Was I interested in 50 year old cars in 1969? I was not.) And most of my favorite airplanes are now 75 or more years old. -

Nice! I've got an old survivor Mono '55 Chev custom in that color and I'm just gonna polish it up, too. -
I know what you mean. I think I'm gonna do one with the kit custom parts. I seem to be collecting quite a few possible AMT '65-'68 custom projects. Might be fun to have six or eight of them displayed together.

That's about as well as I've ever seen this model built. Great work and model on!

Polish it up and amaze your friends! I've done quite a few polished plastic models and am proud of all of them. -
I'd be tempted to "accidentally" fall into that thing and see if I could knock it over. Or at least knock it into an expensive display of some sort. And then give my best Bluto-on-the-stairwell "Sorry...." look. Or maybe, better yet, claim it attacked me first.

I'm still using VCRs (3 of them), but blank tapes are getting VERY hard to find. I've taken to buying pre-recorded tapes when I can find them and taping over the recording hole. Last weekend, at a couple of yard sales, I was able to score over 70 of them for $20. That should keep me going for another year or so.

They all look great. Don't I recognize your name from the "other magazine"? Has it been TEN YEARS since we've seen your name there?
-
You did a great job with that Camaro, but personally, I wouldn't have put that much effort into basically completely rebuilding it (the kit's just too common--I've bought a bunch of them just for parts). I would however have seen what I could do with what was there, with a minimum of time and effort. But hey that's just me. I really like where you're going with that '57, though! Drive on!

I've been working on a "survivor resto" on this custom '65 Impala I bought on eBay last month. (It's nearly done.) Funny thing is, it's closer to stock than custom, as it has the stock rear bumper and a full stock interior--only the front end and "bullet" talllights are custom. So last night on eBay I scored an original stock AMT '65 grille/bumper for it. Thinking maybe I can set it up so I can use either one, switching them out as the mood strikes me. I paid for it just about what a repop would have cost me from Modelhaus--similar shipping, too, if not less. Guy was apparently parting out a built, restorable '65 Impala. If he'd put the whole car up, it would have probably brought somewhere between $35 and $55, maybe a bit more. If he gets even his starting bid price for all the pieces, he'll make over $100 (the body with glass [but no hood] went for $28). KInda sad to see it broken up this way. It would have made a nice rebuild project.

I'd buy and build one of those, but the rear fender skirts would have to go.
