But that's no fun!
-
I use Parafilm M for masking and I have to give you a warning. It does get affected by solvents in certain paints (it gets softened). While the paint did not penetrate it, the soft Parafilm M was difficult to remove. Going be the name, it is paraffin-based (candle wax). There is no adhesive (it is just clingy when stretched out), so it is very low tack. But it only clings well to glossy surfaces. It is hard to get it to stay on flat painted surfaces. It is not for all types of masking, but It does have its place in my arsenal of multiple types of masking materials.

Zero paints - gritty finish question
peteski replied to Mcpesq817's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Guys, lacquer thinner is not identical between brands, and even between the locations where it is sold. Different brands use different types and proportions of solvents (which in general do thin lacquers well, but with all the newly formulated paints, not all will work equally well). Then there are states like California, which mandate which and how much of certain chemicals can be used in paints and thinners. -
That is a bit odd train of thought. What would you expect to happen if there was no like button, and that guy disliked by the author of the thread would post a verbose "I like you model" reply? Would all hell break loose?
-
The short one-sentence replies are perfectly fine, but (as Rob mentioned) those that quote 20 large photos, just to add "Nice" at the end were very annoying. However I have to say that one nice feature in the new version of the Forum is that lengthy quoted posts are not fully displayed. So there is some good in this update.

Nice! EDIT: it took me 3 seconds to post the above "Nice!" response. Are we really that strapped for time that we need to have single click "Likes"?

As I mentioned earlier, this is perfect example of "feature" creep in computer software. Do we need badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges! But the software producer forces all those cute features on us. I prefer simplicity, and a clean layout, but that doesn't keep the programmers employed.

What exactly did you expect?! Some magic unicorn tape? That tape has been available for decades, and lots of modelers (me included) really like it, and recommend it to the newbies. If the tape as crappy, why would we all recommend it? I have never has any masking tape I used (Tamiya, brown Scotch, or Blue Painters) ever have the paint soak through it. Maybe you are spraying it *TOO* heavy? But even heavy coats should not soak through the tape. What brand/type of paint are you using? How long are you waiting for the bottom coat to dry, and how long are you waiting for the top coat of paint to dry before removing the tape? You just don't seem to have much luck in your modeling ventures.

That seems odd. You might "like" someone's post to create a "bookmark", even if you don't really care or like the post? Most forums (including this one) keep really good track of what you have read and clearly show it to you. At least that is how the forum works for me.

It probably depends on how the body/hood bag was packaged. If the hood is snapped (stretched) over the cowl area, the hood will be splayed. If it was not snapped over the cowl, it is probably ok. I just tried on my kit, and the bag is long enough to contain the body and hood without the hood being over the cowl.

That's one of the reasons that the "like" or the other 2 tags are really meaningless. You can't tell who tagged you. Much nicer if someone you can identify posts a "real" "I like it" message. I wonder if this works the same on Facebook, or can you actually see who liked the contents you posted?

Yes, I also enjoy participating in this forum. Many knowledgeable and helpful members. I've only been a member since 2014, so I guess I missed the "bad years"? What specifically was the problem? Nasty members, was it over-moderated, or something else? I believe that user profiles are not purged after a member leaves. What was your original username, and couldn't you just rejoin using the original user name?

For all the old timers - 1965 McDonalds ad
peteski replied to Vietnam Vet67's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
The best burger and shakes (chocolate of course) are from In-N-Out burger chain in California. Unfortunately, I live on the wrong coast to enjoy them regularly, but when I'm in CA, I enjoy a visit to the In-N-Out. -
The forum software developer has to add things in most updates, just because. I think it is called "feature creep". This happens to pretty much every piece of computer software out there. Quite few of those "new features" are totally unneeded, and often make the software more complicated to use, or add to a more busy look. Do we need the rocket badge? No. Is it useful? No. What it really is (if you can hover over it) is to show you the rating of each member. Like "Ohana". That rating used to be displayed out in the open in the older forum version. Now they hid it. Cute isn't it? Not! They did the same with the "Edit Post" function. After a recent update I couldn't find a way to edit the post. After hunting for it for some time I finally found it. In the past it used to be out in the open. I believe that the "Edit" button used to be clearly shown at the bottom of a post. But the software wizards decided that it was too easy. They have now hidden that function in the "..." pull-down menu. But it is so non-intuitive that I find myself clicking on the "quote" button instead! Plus, what took only a single click, now takes 2 (open the menu, then clock on "edit"). Judging by what I see others doing (quoting their own posts when they want to edit), I'm not the only one who find this new hidden edit "feature" confusing. I'm finally getting used to it, but that means that the"Edit" function will probably be moved again. They can't seem to leave things alone! Yes, this was a rant about those constant changes, just for the sake of change!

COLORS BY BOYD BOTTLE PAINT
peteski replied to DavidChampagne's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Just so you don't get your hopes up, those cheesy 1/4 oz. bottles are not Colors by Boyd. They are the same old Testors PLA enamel paints Testors always sold (for probably over 50 years now). Testors also sold Colors by Boyd in 1/2 oz. round glass bottles, but those are also likely as rare as the cans. -
I have the Endless River "box set", but I still like the older classic Pink Floyd.

For all the old timers - 1965 McDonalds ad
peteski replied to Vietnam Vet67's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
While I'm not quite that old (well, I was around in '65, but too young to eat at McDonalds), I enjoyed seeing this ad, the old style logos, and the '60s prices. Those were the real "golden arches". -
Just picked up my kit (in U.S.-style box) from Michael's. Also has the hood problem, exactly as shown in Tim's photos. As I see it the problem is that when they package the body and hood, then stretch the hood and slide it over the cowl. At that point the plastic is fresh out of the mold, and when it sits in that stretched state for a long time (being shipped and in the store), the hood is stretched out permanently. This problem could have been easily prevented by either leaving the body and hood loose in a larger plastic bag, or pack the hood and body separately. Such a small change of packaging would have prevented many complaints, and having sent out replacement hoods. What were they thinking . . .

To err is human? Some are uncorrectable.
peteski replied to bonehead23's topic in How To Use This Board
Unfortunately it doesn't work in reverse. -
Take some Tamiya tape (or Washi tape, which is the same stuff), place it on a piece of glass, and using a steel ruler and a fresh hobby knife blade, or single-edge razor blade, cut your stripe.
