The kit wheels are horrible. Just terrible in every way. So it was off to 3D print some options. I printed a few styles to try out. First up was a 5-spoke wheel, followed by a set of BBS RS wheels. Then I tried a set of VW Orbital wheels. I thought they all looked pretty good, but as this is a “BBS Edition” car, I chose to go with the BBS wheels. My first set scaled out to be around 17” diameter. I hit them with gloss black paint, then with some Duplicolor chrome. The tires were painted with Tamiya Rubber Black. Whoa. I initially thought I’d go with a chrome lip and gold mesh, but after spraying this, all chrome was the way to go. I thought these turned out great. But then I mocked them up with the body, and they looked too big. So it was back to the computer, resized them and I'm printing a slightly smaller set, should be set closer to 16” diameter. I'll refinish them in the same way. Then I'll compare and see which size works best.

Interesting. I see one in my future. -
I don’t do a lot of WIP threads, mainly because I usually forget to take pics. So lets see how this one goes. I’ve been a VW fan for years. Literally since I was a kid, before starting school. My fav toy when I was 4 or 5 was a green diecast Beetle. A few years later, I got a job detailing cars for a local VW/Porsche dealer. I got to drive not only new Porsches, but also new GTIs, Corrados, etc. In the years since, I’ve owned a few VWs, and will probably see another show up in my garage sooner rather than later. So when I was able to purchase a handful of VW kits from a friend who was clearing out his collection of VW merch, I jumped at the chance. This is the VW Golf BBS kit by Nitto This is an older kit, and is certainly indicative of the time. Originally issued in 1983, this is Nitto’s Golf BBS Kit Type. Odd name to be sure. This is a very simple kit and like many of the Japanese kits of the 80s, was originally designed to be motorized. It has a very basic interior, and what looks to be a well proportioned body. It also appears to be accurate, as this does look like the BBS aero kits that were available in the 80s, and are highly sought after now. I find it interesting that Nitto included ABT, Zender, and Oettinger decals. For those unaware, ABT are a VW/Audi tuning company and have been around since the 70s. What’s even more interesting is that a 1986/1987 reissue of this kit had it branded as a BBS Oettinger Golf, with Oettinger being another German tuning company. Zender where also huge into body styling on Euro cars back in the 80s. The kit is molded in white, black, and clear plastic. There is a chrome tree, but it’s just wheels and two lights. The tires are a soft rubber, and have held up well over the years. Decals are full colour and will hopefully be useable. As I received it, the kit had been started. Poorly. Luckily, no paint was used, but whoever started it used glue quite liberally, so disassembly took a bit. First, I focused on the body, sanding off mold lines and attaching the side skirts. I shaved the front marker lights too, as they looked too big in my opinion. I hit it with some Tamiya white primer, resanded, primed again, resanded, then shot the Tamiya Gloss White paint.

Was wrapping gifts last night. You know that feeling you get, when you've got the scissors, and you start cutting the paper, and then the scissors just start cleanly sliding through the paper without the cutting motion? Awesome. ? ?

Same with Barrett Jackson. I like the Wednesday/Thursday vehicles, because they're realistic. Could actually afford them, and wouldn't be afraid to drive them.

Heatwave! Was only -33 outside this morning. Plus windchill. Now for those of you in warner climates who don't understand what that does to your vehicle when left outside overnight: your tires get hard, and for the first few minutes, you're driving on "square tires" the fluid in your shocks/struts thickens up, so suspension is almost non-existent for a few minutes your power steering fluid thickens up, so steering takes a lot more effort for a while the foam in your seats hardens, so without heated seats to assist, it's like sitting on a wooden bench exhaust particles linger, making visibility while in traffic a challenge sometimes. if you haven't plugged in your block heater, and aren't running winter weight oil, your vehicle probably won't turn over and start. your TPMS will probably start warning you about tire pressure. The air molecules in your tires are colder, so they get closer, and your pressure drops. If it gets too cold, you could peel a tire from the rim I was warm and cozy inside my truck, had the Christmas tunes playing, had my tea with me. All is good. ? ?

Thank you Ford, for heated seats, heated steering wheels, and remote starters. With the windchill, it's -42.

These were actually sort of a factory offering. https://www.hagerty.com/media/automotive-history/choo-choo-customs-helped-chevy-deliver-a-proper-looking-el-camino-ss/ And AMT made a kit that is readily available. It's been reissued a few times.

Tires should be easy, because one could easily 3D print any tires they wanted, and scale them to suit a 1/20th build. Finding Jeep Laredo wheels could be a challenge. In theory, 3D printing these to fit would be easy, but finding them as a print file might be tough. I had a quick look around, but haven't seen them yet.

I need to pick this up. Have always liked these cars.

Try making your own decals. Amazon sells decal paper for inkjet printers. Find the logos required, print, spray with some clearcoat, and apply as usual. Not quite as good as factory, as the decals are a little thicker, but it does work. Especially if you clearcoat the body after applying the decals.

That looks great!

Anyone deal with Motor City Resin Casters?
iamsuperdan replied to gbtr6's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
So yes this thread is a lot of complaining (and rightfully so) but when Jeff visited the site 4 hours ago, wouldn't it have made sense to respond? I mean, if my reputation and ethics were being questioned, I'm pretty sure I would be on the defense and would try to allay the concerns of customers who have placed orders and potential future customers. -
There are a number of boards I've signed up to over the years that for one reason or another were not for me. Sometimes I was looking for one specific answer, and either found it or didn't. Or the board was just dead. Or there was too much drama. Some of the boards for Chev/GMC trucks and Ford trucks are like that. A little too much redneck attitude for my tastes. In any case, I just stopped visiting. There are a lot of people who sign up and use fakes birthdays, so I wouldn't put any stock into that 107 year old guy being legit.

My vote is for the Corvette sawblades. Or the turbofans.

I don't understand the fuss over this car. Yeah, it's a nice car, but it's a little played out and dated looking now. It reflects the tastes of car design from 20 years ago. But I guess it's the only memorable part part from an otherwise forgettable remake of a somewhat forgettable cult movie. I prefer the original car and movie to the remake anyway. -
It's addictive isn't it? I have printed so many wheels, tires, engines, engine bay parts, seats, etc that I don't really know what I'm going to do with them all. I look at my stash, something jumps out, I get an idea, then suddenly I'm downloading files and printing parts. What am I doing? Am I mad? I have a dozen projects on the bench, I don't need to be printing parts for future projects! So now it's a stash of kits, and a stash of printed parts! Ahh well, it's still fun, and that's what it's all about.

It's 10 days until Christmas. Yeah, I like the holidays.
