Driving your model cars around on the streets
89AKurt replied to Venom's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That's funny, I own a '68, had a '69 before. That one is a beauty! Only one time, the dream was coming up to a brick one story shop, the parking lot on the side had tables with white paper over them, set up for a contest. The show was for the whole weekend, I was wondering if my models would be safe outside for two days and a night, so was hesitant to enter. I have a reoccurring theme, driving around aimlessly, mostly lost in a city, sometimes in the woods, like I'm in a rally. I never see the car I'm in. So I'm missing out. -
Very nice detail and decal workmanship.

Geez, over a month since I broke plastic! ? Time flies, too distracted with work and stupid stuff. I've been looking at it, and scheming what and how to make a mountain out of a molehill. Drew a basic plan and sections to figure out the suspension. I'm not going full out detail, just enough to look more realistic than the kit, will paint black so no point to do fine detail. I see ORVs usually have colorful suspensions, but will resist. Took reference pictures to get some ideas. Doing shocks will be fun, have lots of springs to choose from. No it won't work! Might not have rotating wheels (nothing like a model rolling off the table and hitting the floor), but want keep steering. Also considering adding disk brakes. The CV boots will be fun. ? Made a wood jig, had reasonable success on the Porndy: First thing to butcher was removing the electric motor hump, using the hot-wire. Since I am going to the trouble, will jack up a little. Time to make sausage, cut up the interior, so the floor can be lowered, and the back opened up for the engine. Used saws and the Tamiya scriber. Have a bunch of work to do, such as filling the gaps behind the back seats. Never had this before, a new pet peeve, used the Dremel. The more I look at this orange plastic, the more I'm thinking......... ?

When I was at my mechanic the other day, saw this article in Hemmings June 2009 issue, about Frank Schaeffer. He likes to weather his models, which is right up my alley. Looks like he does commission work too. He prefers the bigger scales: Uh right, guess he does not hang out on this forum? ?

Selling Car Model Kits on eBay
89AKurt replied to dwdirks's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have some unique kits (super rare collectible gold-plated ?), such as a Fujimi 1/16 Toyota 2000GT, for example. I understanding website needs some revenue to stay alive, I'm surprised MCM hasn't monetized this forum. I belong to a Chevy truck forum, members who want to sell/trade need to pay a membership fee. -
This is still a popular kit. Be careful with the fit of the engine into the chassis, at the back cross member, the two pins, with interference of the accessory belt. Test fit before painting the chassis/body. I was disappointed the intercoolers are missing. Also be sure to putty the wing/bonnet joint. Have fun!

Selling Car Model Kits on eBay
89AKurt replied to dwdirks's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've been thinking about selling, read through the comments, just turned me off. Big Corporation dings you left and right. ? But good luck selling at any swaps that can be open because of CV-1984. -

Model kit is the Italeri - Ferrari 275 GTS (Spyder N.A.R.T.), finished March 11. Whenever I read about the Spyder, there was usually a reference to the Thomas Crown Affair, starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. I rented the movie just for research, felt totally ripped off because the car got about 20 seconds of screen time, and was never started or driven, so no musical V12 sound, no chase, nothing. ? The movie car has the alloy wheels, so this is not an exact replica, but owners often switched wheels, and repainted and upholstered different colors to suit them, so I could argue it's a later period of ownership. In fact, Steve McQueen owned a NART. So it barely qualifies for this group build, but I did it for me. The most common screenshot from the movie, which came after the following scene: A much better shot of the whole car: In situ needing Ethyl. Fujimi wheels and tires from the Daytona kit. Most of the cars I researched did not have a radio antenna. I opened the doors and trunk. Had paint issues, also didn't like the first result so stripped it, got a better match the second time. Aftermarket emblems on the trunk. Added piping to the seats, and belts. Added a fire extinguisher, because the last one sold for $27.5 million auction! ? Sent the bumpers, window cranks (which were separated from the door panel), door mirror to get chrome plated. Current AZ Barrett-Jackson license plate. Stainless steel exhaust tips. Vacuum-formed the headlight covers, made reflectors for the headlights. Made the teardrop side lights. Added bug splats, because it's driven. Added plug wires with Historic Racing Miniatures distributors contributed by a forum member. ? Added fuel pump and lines, radiator hoses, air horns, transmission cooler, battery cables, steering shaft and box, plaques, oil sump tank, washer bag, and hood prop rod. The Fujimi Daytona has most of the tools for the kit, which sells for the price of a decent car! Made the missing tools such as the wood handle hammer, oil filter wrench, some jack parts, hazard sign box, fan belt, spare fuse box, manual, etc., and the leather bag. Gas cap, and trunk liner to boot. ? The interior passenger foot rest was a molded on part, made a separate unit. Final touch is the model box.

Ferrari F8 Tributo review
89AKurt replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yea, it's okay. If you gave me that car, I would enjoy it. I had 4 point belts in my MINI Coopers, at first thought it was weird to use daily, then thought if I got in a wreck with the OE belts and got injured, would be pissed. Yes they were a PITA to put on, but didn't need adjusting every time. I liked being strapped in, now OE belts feel like I'm floating around, clinging to the steering wheel for dear life on my favorite roads that are way better than what he has. -
Shapeways products self-destructing
89AKurt replied to 89AKurt's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yes, I'm dredging up my own thread, because I've seen the repurcusions of ignoring the little voice in my head. Over a year later, it looks like she is wearing a raincoat. This is the translucent plastic, not the white opaque such as some other figures I got from Shapeways that aren't showing this issue. The skin is Testors acrylic, the dress is Liquitex acrylic artist paint. I had sprayed Testors flat clear over. The edge of the dress has melted too. So is this the different paints reacting, or the figure's plastic? -

Been needing a display case for a long time. My ex-wife has a consignment store, just happened to be there at the right time, got a deal too. Installed the LED lights tonight, and put the small dioramas in with some other models. Fits perfect in this corner. I can get more shelves made if needed.
