Rust Box of Doom Chevy Wagon '57 Drag Week 2018
89AKurt replied to Reuhkapelti2's topic in WIP: Model Cars
One of my favorite subjects! I owned a '57 4 door 210 station wagon last century. I have an old Revell glue bomb, and the Monogram kit, last year got the resin body which is a really crude copy of a die cast. Yes the roof is longer. The rear slope is not as steep either. No recessed lines across the top. It was fun to own, but got tired of hearing people say "nice Nomad" when it's the bottom of the totem pole of collectibility, and I could not sneak around. -
What are you doing during the upgrade?
89AKurt replied to Dave Ambrose's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks for the warning! Yea, I'm in possessed/obsessed mode with the PORNDY project. Downloading pictures has been working fine BTW. -
Yes, I think that all the time. When I contemplated redoing the scoop intakes using left over Modena scoops, I stopped because it was morphing into a Dino (not a bad thing). Yea, insane at times. Cut out the other door. This time I glued in some steel screen (can't really see it here) at a critical area to prevent the lower panel from separating from the body. Also refined the wing support. Making the door jamb, using up the other rear wing for this. I was thinking of keeping the fuel filler in the original location, but after making the underside elbow thing, have decided it needs to be re-located in the center of the hood (where the body mount is would fix that sink mark).

3D Printed wheel from HRE
89AKurt replied to Richard Bartrop's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Wow, that's really high tech! Basically laser welding a pile of titanium dust. -
Awesome workmanship! I like the auxiliary lights, much smaller size than rally style.

DITTO! How do you "print" titanium? I can see machining it, but not squirting it out like with plastic. -
Big whoop time today, added a steel brace so the engine cover would match the cabin. Used the caliper to get the dimension, made a wood spreader, the super-dooper-glued in the wiper blade steel brace.

Revell Chevy Luv Machine #H-1300 (fixed photos, 1/27/16)
89AKurt replied to Russell C's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
Thanks for leading me here. I inherited a '72 LUV, my dad's father had traded in his '57 Chevy Handyman wagon that he bought new, for it. (don't get me going about that) It broke down on a monthly basis when I attended trade school in Phoenix. I've been wanting to build most of the vehicles I've owned, and parents owned, and this is NOT one I would waste my time on. -
My first vehicle was a '72 "Chevy" LUV (rebadged Isuzu), it was a POS but the size was good. Currently own a '68 Chevy pickup, which is smaller than any Nissan, Toyota of today. Everything is bigger now, except Smart cars.

The Longest VOLVO ( F-12 )
89AKurt replied to Сергей's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Love it! Are those railroad bolts? Very impressive craftsmanship. I have two truck kits for someday projects, they are race versions, need to have a different frame of mind to work on them. Have you ever thought of doing windmill blade transporters, those are even longer. -

Good, thanks! Managed to make a working rear wing. I should have tilted the hydraulic ram, but needed the length, so had to make the front hinge complicated. Made numerous parts before getting right. Test fit with wire, works good, but needs tightening up. In full stop mode: Speedway mode: Ordered these via eBay from Hong Kong, arrived before I expected! Too bad the least number of emblems are Porsche, I already have Ferrari coming out of my ears. Have a problem that is creeping in, the engine body is shrinking inward, now have a nasty mismatch with the cabin, may need to glue in a steel brace that can spring it back out.

Porsche emblems (and some other makes too) for my current project. Got off eBay, from Hong Kong, arrived before expected.

I've taken a license plate to the place I get copies all the time, they laid on the copier/scanner, then used PhotoShop to reduce to size. I have them do exactly 1/2" wide, and then make some 5% larger, and more 5% smaller just to be safe.

Dang, I noticed the weld lines on the mufflers! I like it, the lack of C-pillars would be a technical challenge, but that's the cool thing about models.

Body and Chassis cutting?

I feel like doing a challenge, my HOT-WIRE against your nasty looking circular saw that can walk off your part and gash your finger. Pick your part, make a video, let's see which is faster. (oh shoot, this forum doesn't have the "let's rumble" smiley) -
Estate Planning - all those models in the basement
89AKurt replied to <profile removed>'s topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Personally, I saw my dad work his butt off, and have time for his Mauser gunsmithing, and go on some cool trips at the end of his work life. Took early retirement, then had trouble staying awake watching the news, started getting easily bruised, then was diagnosed with Parkinson's. Started going downhill fast, ended with sudden lead poisoning. So much for enjoying the American work to retirement lifestyle. Funny how time goes faster the older I get (anyone else notice that?). I'm at about 180 kits, have doubled in the past few years. I've been a member of three model clubs in my small town, the current one is a break-off from the militaristic IPMS club. We had a display at the library, one day one of our members was just hanging around, a man asked what he should do with his recently passed dad's models. Next meeting he brought in several boxes, I got several somewhat rare kits for a screaming deal, the man was happy to unload them. The "president" (not IPMS remember) bought the collection later, I got some more kits, was given ones that were started, which I sold on Facebook for $2 - $5, it was a feeding frenzy! I think that made some guys happy, instead of going to the landfill. I've been selling some lately, at model swap meets and contests, and on Facebook. Have not tried eBay yet. It's sort of tough to admit I'm mortal, and I will not build every Ferrari kit I have. I do have in my basic Will, that the Model Car Builders Museum in Salt Lake should get the collection if my kids don't wish to deal with it. -

Motorcycles are not my thing, but always appreciate the work people put into them. I can't imagine working on that, one slip and... ... I'm a shattered Shattered All this chitter-chatter, chitter-chatter, chitter-chatter 'bout Shmatta, shmatta, shmatta, ... Looks awesome from here! -
Funny you should say that.... Since I had the radiator vent holes in the sides, I centered the brass tube in there. It was a trick to drill from both sides, much like digging a railroad tunnel through the Alps and meeting in the middle, started with a smaller drill, then adjusted with the bigger one. Found a paper clip that was round (some are flattened a little, and not shiny) and fit inside with just enough resistance. I wanted some of the wings to stick out in the parked/slow speed mode, when you hit 88 MPH they come out 50%, at 155 MPH 88% with an additional 10° attack angle, and over 180 MPH they project 100%, with a constantly variable angle that is read from the spring compression sensors. During hard braking, they rotate 90° to act as air brakes. I wind tunnel tested it. For the Dukes of Hazzard jumps, they help for lift off. Started on the rear wing hydraulic strut, no pictures.

Thank you. So far, so good. Plan to paint much of the inside areas flat black to hide the rough fabrication. Yea no kidding, next project will be box-stock! Thanks, it's not much different than what everyone else does, stuffing big blown engines into little cars.
