FSM - The Automotive Content Thread
OldNYJim replied to vincen47's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
In fairness to FSM, this issue happened to me on the Scale Auto site too - never did manage to get an account to work on there despite being a long-term subscriber, and ditto the forum. I did try all the obvious tricks to get it working (try a different computer, different browser, tried on an iPad, tried an iPhone, did what their support people said, etcetera etcetera) but I just gave up in the end. I was never so desperate to read an article that I couldn't wait for the magazine to come out, but its definitely something they'll want to get fixed if they're trying to push the online aspect more. -

No; he did move into a new house, but the doors are too narrow for his work bench to fit thru, so that’s causing further delays (no, really) -
Wow, that was a long title! I felt like building something for a contest, but not necessarily GOING to a contest (even if a bunch of them weren’t cancelled anyway). I saw the Desert Scale Classic is all-online this year so I figured I’d try throwing something together for that... Also this year I wanted to build an AMT Deuce, and there was some graffiti right near our local station in New York that I’d always see that just read “Joker Is Wild” (?) and I thought that’d be a cool showcar name. Throw those all together and here comes another project! I picked up the Pro Shop AMT Deuce and figured that would make a nice change from the much more popular Revell kit if I’m going with a 32. Unfortunately, it’s fair to say there’s nothing too “pro” about the frame in this kit. Was kinda hoping it was the one WITHOUT all the moulded-in junk... I do have a bunch of the optional Deuce frames from the Revell 29 kit tho... The AMT axle drops right in there too! Now, I know I’d be better off just building a Revell 32 Roadster kit, but I kinda wanna do something with this AMT body, and I’ve been wondering how the new Revell frame would would with any of those older bodies, so here’s a chance to try it out... I zee’d the Revell frame at the front to get the nose down somewhat, made a new crossmember for mock-up purposes and then modified the AMT axle to accept the Revell 29 fined brake drums. Oh, and drilled it out too: I’d like to use the AMT Hemi that comes in the kit...but the Revell take is much newer and better too so I’ll be going with that too I think: Quick mock-up - it’s a start! More soon! ?

If you’d painted it in enamel back then it would nearly be dry by now! ? Good start, it looks cool - what’s the plan?
-
Great start! You know it’ll be cool in the end if just the body and wheels mocked up look great before you’ve even started working on the thing!

Same for me - I gave up trying to get it to work a while back. They told me the same thing, and even had me set up a new account but I still can’t get in there. Which is a pity, seeing as they published a build review of mine earlier this month but I’ve got no way of seeing it ??♂️ -

Not as disappointed as all the LEGIT customers who believed Steve Scott’s snake oil sales pitch for a kit that will never exist. Disgusting. Now (on the Facebook group for people interested in the kit) he’s blaming Wall Street bankers for ruining the economy for the delay in starting the kit (!) and, of course, Covid. Oh, and he’s lost all his savings somehow, so don’t bother asking for a refund ? -
A little tiny bit more progress on this one - next job was remaking the handlebars. I tried a few times to make a set with aluminum tube but kept kinking it, so finally got smart and just ordered some solid 1/16th aluminum bar instead. Bent up a single length of it, made that flat square brace, used some rubber tube for the grips and ground down the back of a skull bead and polished it a little for a fun little detail piece: Need to make the clutch and brake levers and figure out the best way to mount them to the forks I made previously. Even unfinished they look better than the kit part tho I think!

I’m excited to see some color on this one...and I like the improvements to that crossmember! Adds a lot! -
That paint looks amazing, nice polishing job!

Roadster pickup would be cool too! I'm sure all these options are available in resin anyway, that said...
-
I’d like it if they brought back the roadster version - I wish I’d stashed more of those away when they were cheap and readily available! A new body would be cool too - although I’m not sure what they could do next that would sell in decent enough numbers....
-
This looks cool!

Really enjoying this build! Love all the little details!

Fujimi 1981 Ayrton Senna Kart
OldNYJim replied to IanH's topic in WIP: Other Racing: Road Racing, Land Speed Racers
Great start! I’ll be following! I’ve wondered about building one of these but I can’t quite visualize how big a 1:20 kart is...is it kinda 1:25 car size-ish? -

Really enjoying this one Dennis - nice work on that front end! -
Thanks fellas! Appreciate the nice words! I airbrushed it right on there! A little drop of thinners and blasted it on - I was worried it would be fragile or chip off easily but it seems fine! A little update on this one - got the body on the frame, and the wheels and tires on: And got the tank mounted to the grill, along with the little mini radiator I found in my spares box and got that mounted too: Made a little catch-can for the radiator, seeing as this thing would almost certainly overheat easily with that Flathead and a covered-over grill shell and a tiny radiator, and mixed up some translucent neon paint to represent a little anti-freeze overflow: Looks like it got hot enough to leak some out of the hoses too: Stupid impractical hot rods, always overheating... More soon!

YES!!!! ??? I also like this one that I saw: http://www.2040-motos.com/Chopper/Chopper/1972-roth-style-vw-c-cab-show-trike-97561/ Meanwhile, some slow progress - I wanted to remake the forks, and stretch them a little. Here’s the kit parts: And here’s my in-progress stretched remakes: Still need to make springs and bars, and figure out a headlight - quick mock-up for my own amusement: Im thinking of going with a nice candy red for this one, but with some graphics hidden in the red...not totally sure what yet, but I like the idea of it looking like a nice simple paintjob but then if you look a little closer a load of extra detail pops out of the paint. Need to finish remaking every little thing for no particular reason first though ? More soon!

Amazon has the Fury kit for $15 delivered right now - just grabbed one for a fun little quickie build. Hope they go through with reissuing the whole set!
