Who Was Richard Carroll?
OldNYJim replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
What was disappointing about them? I’d love to see a photo of the ones you got - I’ve been wanting a set forever! Someone on the Coffin Corner site made contact with him a while back, as I recall - a search on there would probably turn up some info. He was talking about developing a new design model tire at one point, but I guess that never happened... -
another use for Elmer's glue?
OldNYJim replied to STYRENE-SURFER's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
That’s a great one! So, like, if you made a box and you wanted the inside corners to be smoothed out rather than straight edges you could flow some in there and it will smooth them out in a place where it would normally be difficult or impossible to use filler and sand? Is that the kind of thing you use this for? That’s a really smart idea! -

One of my favorite builders! Loved following this one so far - keep going! -
Finned Oil Filter ?
OldNYJim replied to Jon Haigwood's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Would you be able to post a decent picture of one when you get it? I’d love to see a nice close up to see how it looks! -
What primer under Rustoleum paint???
OldNYJim replied to 2zwudz's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I’ve been using that Rustoleum primer for a while too on various kits of various ages - no issues yet! Touch wood... -
Thanks buddy! Wrapped it up this morning - just needed a steering column so I made one to replace the kit part... ...and got that mounted along with the wheel: All just little steps...but my favorite part is when you can start to see a bunch of little parts come together and look how you hoped they would!

Finned Oil Filter ?
OldNYJim replied to Jon Haigwood's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Parts By Parks makes (made?) something similar, but it’s hard to tell if the fins are deep enough to work for what you’re trying to do: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F372829175202 -
'32 Ford roadster gluebomb rework. April 26: back on track
OldNYJim replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I LOVE seeing some more progress on this one! It’s a real joy to see your work Ace! -
And a little more progress on the interior today...this lockdown has got me productive all of a sudden ?. Made a Moon gas pedal and a little brake pedal, polished out the center console (seems like that was a thing AMT liked to offer on these old kits a lot), installed the phone (what showcar from the 60s would be seen without one?! ?), added the floor mats and spent some time getting everything secured to everything else! Pretty pleased with how it looks...need to work on the wheel and column next. More soon!

A little more on this today...I’d shot paint on the interior tub already so whilst I’m waiting for a bunch of other parts to dry I figured nows a good time to keep working on that. First up, flocked the floor (or the parts that you’ll be able to see anyway, leaving the spots where I need to glue later) and then added some chrome trim made from silver wire to the door panels: Then, I made some door cranks and window winders: And a quick mock-up for motivational purposes: More soon, soon as I’ve done more!

Day 7 here, almost day 8. NYC is now in some kind of quasi-lockdown where you’re meant to stay indoors unless you’re buying essentials or exercising. My wife has been home all week and expects to be here for two more at least. I’m getting the same amount of model stuff done as usual because I’m here most of the time anyway, but it sure was quieter around here in the daytimes until this happened ? Still, we’re safe and healthy and thankful for that.

You know, a Silhouette will engrave clear plastic pretty well....easy to make something like that guy showed in the video above!

Yes sir! I found this setting: And I figured the force was controlling the blade depth too...turns out I was wrong, and that little dial moves the auto-blade that mine has in and out. Works GREAT now I know how to use it properly ?? My old machine was a little simpler to use... Thanks for the pointers! Meanwhile, as I’m replying anyway, shot some Createx Pearl Purple on the engine parts this morning - should look cool against that black and purple body and the green roof: More soon!

I’m second to PLENTY of people, but thank you ? YES! I’ve got a bunch of those here, I should’ve thought of that...the earlier issues have a really cool pair of skull headlamps that are good for shift knobs! I need to make another mould of one of those so I can make some more
-
Stunning! What material did you use for the red cap?
-
Thanks fellas! A tiny bit of progress - gave the body and chassis a handful of coats of clear so I can polish out all the lumps and bumps from the airbrushing: And did some work on the engine - I wanted a coffin shaped blower scoop (like this thing wasn’t dumb enough already) so I designed one and had the cutter cut it: Should be a pretty wild looking engine once I start getting some paint and detail on there: That scoop looks RIDICULOUS here, but it looks just right (or just wrong enough) with the engine in the car. More soon!

Corona Virus (Covid 19) and Model Kits
OldNYJim replied to Daddyfink's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The dirty family in the apartment next to us (you know, the one with the mice and roaches and rotten garbage smell that the landlord can’t evict because they threatened him with a racism suit) had an ambulance arrive today and take one of the parents away, coughing and spitting. I sure wish if they thought one of them might be sick they hadn’t let their kids use our tiny lobby as a playground all week, touching everyone’s doors and buzzers and coughing on everything. Hope we don’t catch it...but also the past week of staying in has actually been less stressful than I figured it would be, terrible neighbors aside. Got a lot of modeling done and my work bench has never been better organized! -

Duplicolor and LA’s Totally AWSOME??
OldNYJim replied to 2zwudz's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Interesting! I bought one of the spray bottles so I could try it out without spending the extra $3 on a whole gallon (Mr Tightwad over here ?)...and I’ve been really pleased with how it performs. If the gallon bottles really are stronger then I’ll definitely get on well with those! -
Huh, that was one of the kits they offered? Cool! I pulled one of these out of my storage around Christmas because I’d forgotten what was in the box. Not a tonne of detail or parts, but I love the little chopper!

Thanks buddy! A little work on the frame today - cut some masks after laying down a base coat of silver: And I figured with this thing sitting so high it would be cool to have a kinda space/galaxy kind of look under there. Laid down some space-looking blacks, blues, pinks and purples with a splattering of white and blue stars: Then added some depth and shadow: Then removed the remaining masks and shot some blue and purple candies over all that: I’m going to add some more of the splattered stars to the frame rails once it’s all dry and I can mask it - but I’m pretty pleased with how ridiculous it looks...gonna be a LOT of colors and stuff to look at on this one! More soon!

Another mini project, whilst we’re waiting for the end of the world to end here...finished up the dash! Drilled out the switches and knobs (deleting the ones that wouldn’t be any use anyway for this build), and replaced them with ones home made with some wire and epoxy mixed with pearl paint. Used Gopher Racing gauges with more epoxy over them to simulate glass, surrounded with chrome-looking rings made of wire. Ditto the radio frequency gauge, which has a couple of polished aluminum knobs for the volume and frequency changers, and the glovebox release is made from a little piece of silver wire and a photoetched ring. Looks pretty cool in there, I think! More soon!
