What did you see on the road today?
OldNYJim replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Sounds like my daily commute through rural Indiana I miss the days of the subway being to blame for my tardiness… -
Hope we get to see some more progress posted on this site too - I’ve been enjoying watching this one come together (and am too disorganized to remember to go check elsewhere ?)

Drive By Wire In 1958
OldNYJim replied to OldTrucker's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If people don’t know if they just put a car in forward or reverse they really shouldn’t be driving one… -
Thanks fellas! Had a busy couple of weeks what with Christmas and work and having the flu and about twenty other things - but I’m excited to get back to the bench and make some progress on this thing! Did a coupla little bits today to get rolling again… Picked up these tubing benders so I could remake the kit headers - the kit ones are SUPER skinny and would only be, maybe 1” tubing or so if scaled up, so I made some meatier ones: I’ll be Aclading them so that the chrome matches everything else on the car and giving them a little heat-staining for some visual interest. Meanwhile, this car either did or didn’t run a parachute, depending on which photo you look at and which year it was taken - I wanted to run one so I painted a resin one that I had in my parts stash, added medical-tape straps and some photoetch washers to represent eyelets, and added the cord to the frame ready for when I mount it (via that aluminum plate that attaches to the back of the frame). I’ll add that and the pull-cord and whatnot fairly late in the build so it doesn’t get knocked off twenty times in the meantime… I’ve been prepping engine parts so I can assemble that soon too, but the trans in the kit doesn’t match the in-out box in the real car so I scratchbuilt one this evening ready for painting tomorrow: I’ll need to make a driveshaft once I’ve got the engine in place, but easier to do than further down the line… Getting a little pile of dragster-looking parts now - more soon! More soon!

Createx black needs some heat for it to set properly - just a few minutes with a hairdrier, or in a dehydrator. It's some peculiarity with that Createx color in particular - none of the other colors NEED heat to set correctly, but the black stays rubbery, like you say, without being force-dried. I like to prime all my stuff too, but that's not causing the problem in this case...

I’ve been thinking about this thread ALL YEAR! Since reading this thread when it was first posted and thinking about what I’d like to build, about all I’ve done is try and hit my goal of building all of the stuff I wanted to this year. I should’ve made a shorter list - it was a LOT of work ? Here’s the list I made at the start of the year: And, in order of the ones I finished… Model A with ridiculous paintjob: A trike: An oval car: A lakes racer (kinda - did a Bonneville build instead of the vintage hot rod I originally planned to do): Another 34 truck: A VW: A Corvette: Something for a show (Desert Scale Classic): A Boyd Coddington kit: And something in vintage police livery: I didn’t finish a build with a scratchbuilt body, or a showrod - but in my defense I did finish an MPC truck for a Scale Auto review, and these two: I’m relatively pleased with what I achieved in ‘21…I learned a lot, and made some concessions in order to hit my goal that I set myself, even if I didn’t REALLY hit it ? I have some ideas for next year’s builds already so I hope there’s a follow-up thread…but now I’ve completed a bunch of builds that I’d been MEANING to do just to get them out of my head and onto the shelf, I really wanted to do some more focused and detailed builds next year. Bring it on!

Got a nice early Christmas gift from a buddy today - a Monogram ‘34 Ford customizing kit: The box didn’t fit in my booth too well, but it’s worth it for that gorgeous old box art! And this too - never saw this kit before! They’re both started, but just barely, and complete as best I can tell - super thoughtful gifts!

Well of COURSE Otherwise people would claim for issues like this more often and they'd have to stop their employees mishandling things and doing a poor job. Heaven forbid they take good care of the packages they've been entrusted with (which they seem to forget AREN'T theirs, to treat as they see fit) (I too sent a package this week, and it arrived looking as though a forklift drove over it)

Monogram Hangman Tow Truck.
OldNYJim replied to John M.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Wow, I just saw what these are going for on eBay…I was considering picking another one up rather than wait until next time I can get to my self store unit (an 11 hour drive away ?), but the cheapest one is a hundred bucks! -

Clears for Candy2o ?
OldNYJim replied to Jon Haigwood's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
That'll work too, same deal! I learned the hard, slow way that I just wasn't laying down enough paint and almost ALWAYS burned through and couldn't figure out why. Of course, 2K likely lays down much thicker than lacquer (and is apparently MUCH tougher to polish) so that could be the magic bullet to get quick easy glossy paintjobs, but same thing applies - gotta have enough meat on the bones to be able to polish it out successfully ? -
Clears for Candy2o ?
OldNYJim replied to Jon Haigwood's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Also, if you're polishing through the clear then there simply aren't enough layers of clear on there - it took me an embarrassingly long time to figure this out and thought there was often something wrong with my polishing technique, but no, I just simply wasn't laying down enough clear coat. For example, when shooting the Rustoleum rattle can clear (the stuff with the black chair on the can) I need to lay down a couple of mist coats and then probably 6-8 coats to get enough to safely polish out the paint job without fear of burn through. Your problem might be as simple as not laying down enough paint to polish... -
Clears for Candy2o ?
OldNYJim replied to Jon Haigwood's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Never used Spraymax, but I have cleared over Createx with a 0.35 tip in my (cheapo Chinese eBay) airbrush dozens of times without issue. Just need to make sure the paint is thinned sufficiently, but if you've ever shot any of Createx's opaque or metallic colors, and clear you shoot will likely be thinner and easier to spray than them. I've found, with Createx, that some lacquers (Rustoleum, especially, but not exclusively) can be too hot for it, and especially so with the Candy colors. Solutions are to gently mist of light coats and build up to a wet coat, or use an intercoat to protect the candy before shooting the clear. Future is a good intercoat, as is Createx's own clear or balancing clear - I prefer Future because it's quick and easy and thin too. I haven't ever tried 2K over Createx, but if I was going to I'd definitely consider shooting a coat of SOMETHING over top of it first to stop the clear dragging or damaging the candy underneath. -

That's a great build - thanks for the heads up on it! Link to save anyone else having to search: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/1948-anglia-southeast-gassers-build.1247758/

Only very loosely related, but I wonder if we'll see a reissue of the Anglia too?
