Monogram '53 Corvette vs AMT '53 Corvette?
slantasaurus replied to Aaronw's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Something nobody has mentioned yet about the AMT Corvette is that in the mid 90s they cleaned up the tooling.......in doing so they messed up the chrome trim on one side of the body ( I think it was the passengers side ) and it now runs "up hill", i.e. it is not parralel to the ground or rocker panels anymore but slopes upward slightly. Everyone has been trashing the 58 Belvedere ( rightly so ) for its curved side trim ( among other problems ) but no one has mentioned this problem on the recient issues of the 53 Corvette. Since you are going to be building a concept Corvette out of the kit it might not be much of an issue for you if you are going to sand off the trim anyway. I built the Monogram Vette years ago and thought it was a nice kit, no fit issues at all. I have a half built AMT Vette right now, also a nice kit but I would give the edge to Monogram for everything except the fact that it is 1/24 scale. The Monogram kit was first issued in the mid 70s as a metal bodied kit, die cast Corvettes have always puzzled me.......Can a die cast Corvette kit win "Best Replica Stock" in a model contest ???? -
One week left to go, everybody. I finished foiling the Dart, I think the 62 Dart might be second to only the 58 Impala in the amount of trim to foil. At least until someone does a 58 Olds.....Today it was nice enough that I was able to clear coat the body. I've done a lot of work over the last week but haven't had time to take any pics. At least I have Sunday and Thursday off work this week and morning hours on the days I do work. I think I can pull it off and finish this one. ARC, I was going to say I was strange but I figured it was a given.

You couldn't afford me.

Thats strange, I actually LIKE BMFing. Thas what I was doing tonight, its questionable if I'll actually finish the Dart though. A few nights ago I realized that I have no mufflers and my parts box is 1000 miles away so I'm going to try to scratchbuild some. I'm not the fastest builder and there isn't any area of the Dart that is finished yet. We'll see what I have in a couple weeks.

*Gasp*.....I actually did some modeling today. Not much though, I added the door panel extentions to the rear of the interior tub. When I went to add the extentions to the front part of the tub I realized I screwed up. The pieces I made would have worked fine if I left the JoHan interior firewall in place. Since I hadn't cut it out yet, because it helped me measure the depth I needed to add, I forgot that when it was cut away I needed to compinsate for the kickpanel area. So, out came the cardstock (actually I used the end flap off a carton of Winstons) and more sheet styrene. I now have 2 new door panel extentions and kickpanels. I haven't taken any pics yet since I'm planning on going to a 1:1 car show tomorrow (Mopars at Big Daddy's) so I'll take some when I get home tomorrow and load them all up. I also need to add some Evergreen strip to better detail the almost non-existant engraving and add the arm rests from the Lindberg kit. BTW, as I was searching images to detail the door panels I realized that the JoHan interior is completely wrong for this car. The engraved detail doesn't match any 62 Dodge trim level 330, 440, or 500. Even the Dash isn't correct as it should have several small round bezels below the speedo.......this kit has none. Too late to fix any of that now, this interior is going to be sort of freestyle, as even if I had the time there would be no way to fix the dash.

Paint has been sprayed on the Dart !!! The Copenhagen blue that I used is darker than I expected, it almost looks black even in direct sunlight. I don't have pics yet because it is a Testors enamel and I'm not touching the body for several days until that stuff has time to harden up good. If I were to screw things up now I would have to strip everthing and start over with a different color because Testors doesn't even make Copenhagen blue anymore. I have a lot of BMFing in my future but it should really pop with this dark blue. Now I just have to tackle the interior.....and finish the chassis.....and the engine.....and scratchbuild a correct exhaust.....

Tryin out New stuff : embossing powder
slantasaurus replied to bryan_m's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I was at Michael's last week looking for embossing powder and was very dissapointed at the color selection. Almost all of them that I could find were more like glitter. I also went to a Hobby Lobby and did find some for the project I'm working on but its not quite the right color either. I wanted to just order some flocking from Detail Master, because I can't find any at any of the LHS's, but Detail Master has a $20 minimum order. -
Isn't it interesting that the parts trees pictured from the 2011 iHobby show have parts for a Paxton supercharger but the box art and built ups from the 2012 iHobby show don't include the Paxton in either build ???

2012 iHobby show - Round2 2013 Announcements
slantasaurus replied to Tom Kren's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
If you've never been to an iHobby show before I can understand how the limited amount of model cars could be a shock but I've been to the show several times and without Revell there would be little reason to go. The big question is, what reissues is Round 2 coming out with ??? That is really the only news here, I wasn't expecting anything new from AMT/MPC or Lindberg (was Lindberg even there ??). -
Thanks for the info. Can't wait to see the rest of your build.

Where are you getting decals from ? I would rather build a Herb Thomas car than the Marshall Teauge version that I have.

Revell '50 Oldsmobile Club Coupe 2'n1
slantasaurus replied to styromaniac's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Thats what I was thinking. MCG seems to be making all of the sets they have offered in the past but its been several years since they have done any new sets. -
Strange that all you guys are talking about WLS in the "good old days". Biondi, Landecker, and Winston are all on WLS NOW. They just signed Fred Winston last week and he starts tomorrow.
-
Considering that Revell planned and even had test shots for a mid-80's Cutlass that was going to be done as a die cast it seems strange that they would have to document and measure one of these cars. They should already have all of the pictures and mesurements already. Doing it in 1/24 would be the kiss of death (see 'Cuda post).
